Unranked Kim Clijsters Shows The U.S. Open Who’s Boss

Last week everyone was all abuzz about Melanie Oudin, the 17-year-old kicking butt at the U.S. Open. Turns out, we got excited about the wrong underdog. Yesterday, unranked Kim Clijsters sealed the deal on the U.S. Open women’s title. Kim was ranked numero uno in the world a few years back, and won the U.S. Open in 2005. But in 2007, she got hitched, retired from tennis, and popped out a baby. Earlier this year, she was invited to play an exhibition game at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, and had such a blast that she decided to come out of retirement. She went into the U.S. Open not expected to do very well but rocked her first few matches. People started really paying attention to her when she knocked out Venus Williams. Next, she took out Serena in the now-infamous game where Serena exchanged words with a line judge. (By the way, Serena was officially fined $10,500 for the incident over the weekend.) When she pounded Caroline Wozniacki in the finals, Kim became the first mama to win the tournament since 1980. Kim, thanks for showing us that we can do it all. And by “all” I mean raising a baby while perfecting a mean backhand. [CNN] Keep reading »

Girl Kidnapped For 18 Years Seriously Doesn’t Care What Sports Happenings She Missed

By now, you all know the story of Jaycee Lee Dugard—kidnapped for 18 years, completely isolated in a series of structures in her captors’ backyard, raped repeatedly. OC Register columnist Mark Whicker took a rather unique approach to covering Jaycee’s story. Rather than focus on the horrible abuse, Whicker chose to talk about … all the sports Jaycee missed in those 18 years. He expressed deep sadness that while in captivity, the girl couldn’t “spike a volleyball … or pitch a softball … or smack a forehand down the line.” Whicker then opined, “Now, that’s deprivation.” He goes on to provide Dugard with a list of all the sports happenings she missed while she was, oh, having her rapist’s children. 17-Year-Old Melanie Oudin Rocks The U.S. Open

Rooting for underdogs is fun. Especially when they’re 17, from Georgia, and count playing cards with grandma as one of their #1 favorite activities. Melanie Oudin started at the U.S. Open ranked 70th, a youngin’ who was not expected to make it very far. She won her first match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova fairly easily. But in her second match, she found herself across the net from Elena Dementieva, ranked number four in the world. Melanie lost the first set and everyone thought she was toast. But then she somehow managed to come from behind for the win. Next, she took down tennis legend Maria Sharapova, and then Nadia Petrova, both in come-from-behind wins. Now Oudin is the youngest tennis player to make it to the Open’s quarterfinals since Serena Williams in 1999.

The Caster Semenya Controversy Continues

Caster Semenya won the 800-meter race at the world championships last week, but the controversy surrounding her continues. A source close to the investigation of Semenya said the runner underwent tests before the start of the World Championship that revealed she had three times the normal female’s level of testosterone in her body. This could be natural, but the Telegraph reported that the head coach of the South African team was once accused of giving a female athlete so many anabolic steroids she was forced to have a sex-change operation and now lives as a man. The coach insists he hasn’t been involved with performance-enhancing drugs since 1989. Keep reading »

Gina Carano Is The Female Face Of Mixed Martial Arts

Some girls sleep with teddy bears. Some girls like to watch mixed martial arts fighting. I would be the latter. What’s MMA? A full contact sport that’s a mix of boxing, wrestling, and martial arts. It’s bloody, it’s hardcore, and it’s one of the most popular sports in the country. You may have seen guys duking it out in cage fights, but did you know that women are getting into the MMA mix, too? Now, Gina Carano, a 27-year-old Texan and daughter of a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, is fast becoming the first lady of the sport. Taking other chicks out with a rear naked choke, big punches, and high kicks, Carano is the girl next door that you do not want to mess with. On August 15, she’ll fight the biggest match of her career, when she takes on Cristiane Santos in “Carano vs. Cyborg.” “If you’re gonna have an addiction,” she says, “it might as well be punching people in the face for a living.” Keep reading »

What The Heck Is Footvolley? (And Should We Be Playing It?)

The first thing you need to know is loads of hot British boys play it, which naturally means the answer is yes. The second thing you need to know is that it’s a combination of football and volleyball. (Obvi! That’s why it’s called footvolley.) The game is incredibly similar to volleyball, except no hands are used. Instead, players kick or head butt the ball over the net, and a soccer ball replaces the traditional volleyball. Like all hot beach games, it originated where the best beaches can be found, Brazil, [ed Note: where for the record soccer is called football but anyway]. A hottie called Octavio De Moraes is credited with creating the game in 1965. Boy, has it come a long way since then. Today almost every country from Israel to the England to Italy has a footvolley association and major brands like Pepsi sponsor national tournaments. Hot boys? Exotic countries? Sunny beaches? That’s enough of an argument for me. [Metro.co.uk] Keep reading »

What’s With Women’s Fashion Mags Hiring Male Sports Star Interns? And When Can We Get One?

David Beckham*, what hath you wrought?

First, the New York Rangers’ left wing Sean Avery interned at Vogue and blogged for MensVogue.com about everything from what’s in his closet (Dries Van Noten, Chanel) to what it’s like fracturing one’s spleen on the ice.

Now, Philadelphia Eagles football player, Stewart Bradley, (who is a total stud muffin, BTW) is interning at Elle magazine. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the 6’4″, 255 lb. linebacker may even be working at Fashion Week later this month.

Hmm, I’d be interested to know if all of Elle‘s interns get to work at Fashion Week.

(*Of course, Becks hasn’t actually interned at a fashion magazine, so this is not exactly his fault. But Becks is responsible for the idea that gifted athletes could also be metrosexual fashionistas. Why, just this week we posted a pic of Becks in his undies, posing for Armani.) Keep reading »
