Eighteen years ago today, The Spice Girls put their stamp on the world by releasing “Wannabe.” It’s hard to believe I was just a little pigtailed eight-year-old at the time, but this song has remained one of my favorite jams and girl power anthems over the years, crowned as my karaoke song of choice. (And I know I’m not the only one who knows all the words to Mel B‘s rap verse to this song, so don’t kid yourselves.) The Spice Girls were more than just a girl band, and “Wannabe” was more than just a song. Girl Power is a way of life that I’m proud to say I still abide by, but that’s not the only thing they taught me. Check out these 10 life lessons we all learned from Baby, Posh, Ginger, Scary and Sporty Spice. Keep reading »
This photo of Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton and Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham dancing at Victoria’s birthday party makes me really happy, probably because it’s just nice to see a female friendship endure the stresses of fame and failure. Also, Sporty was there too, making V. Becks’ b-day a 60 percent spicy Spice Girls reunion. [Twitter]
Emma Stone has met a lot of celebrity royalty in her lifetime. You’d think that someone who’s rubbed elbows with so many A-listers would never get starstruck, but it turns out Emma has an inner fangirl … for the Spice Girls. I guess it makes sense — the Spice Girls were huge back when Emma was in middle school and high school. The Girls are still spicing up her life, though, because during an interview with an Australian radio station, they played a message that Mel B, AKA Scary Spice, recorded just for her. Emma, adorably, started to cry. You can take a girl out of the ’90s, but you can’t take the ’90s out of the girl! [Vogue UK]
Victoria Beckham is one of my favorite people in the Twittersphere, and the Spice Girls pizza she tweeted this week forever cemented her swoon-worthy status in my eyes. Apparently, her mother unearthed the pizza in the depths of her freezer with its vintage packaging intact. In what is clearly an act of culinary brilliance, every letter of the pizza is a different flavor. Excuse me while my 10-year-old self squeals with fangirl glee. I love that Victoria’s mom saves random, bizarre artifacts of her kid’s life just like the parents of we commonfolk do. The only difference is that if my mom were to pull something from my life out of our freezer, it’d be like a loaf of bake sale bread I made from canned pumpkin in 10th grade rather than, say, a licensed product from my celebrity youth. But it’s all relative right? [People] [Image via Twitter]
“I think what gave me confidence in myself was meeting the other [Spice] Girls. We always said we were all like rejects in our own way. We had to work hard, and they helped me accept me for who I was.”
– Victoria Beckham, this month’s Allure cover girl, tells the mag that after being bullied mercilessly in school (“I really wouldn’t wish it on any kid, because it’s horrible.”), joining the Spice Girls helped her find her inner Girl Power. Coincidentally, lip syncing “Wannabe” at the top of my lungs in my parents’ living room helped me find mine. Spice Girls 4EVER! [Grazia]
Geri Halliwell sauntered into a London Christmas party wearing this fabulous outfit that I’m dying to recreate. That white shawl collar coat is divine (and Olivia Pope approved), and the hot pink (or is it radiant orchid?!?!) clutch adds a formal, festive touch to the whole ensemble. Want to steal this Spice Girl’s style for yourself? After all, it’s perfect for all sorts of holiday gatherings. Get all the shopping details after the jump!
