How Social Media Can Help You Get Fit

It’s a pretty well-known fact that telling friends and family about your goals can help you achieve them, and fitness is no exception. While broadcasting your New Year’s resolutions on your Facebook page might not do much to keep you from abandoning those goals a week later, the more you involve others in your ongoing plans, the more likely you are to stick with them.

There are a lot of resources out there to help you find someone to join you in your workouts, and there are tons of iPad apps that help you log your runs, count your calories, and even plan your yoga workouts. But don’t forget the power of social media — here are some great ways to harness your social network and meet your fitness goals. Read more…

Of all the good reasons to wrap it up, not bringing a bundle of joy into the world who you are ill-prepared to care for is a big one. A Brazilian ad agency took this idea to the extreme by Facebook friending young men with a profile of their fake “baby” with their name followed by “Jr” — like Kevin Federline would have gotten a friend request from Kevin Federline Jr. (And then high-fived his bros.) All the Facebook messages linked back to the web site for Olla Condoms, who sponsored the campaign. Very clever, but very terrifying. [CreativityOlla.com.br]

Soapbox: Celebrate Your Dang Anniversary In Person—Not On Facebook!

If you wish your spouse a happy anniversary in the privacy of your own home, does it count? Apparently not. I’ve noticed an influx of wedding anniversary, humblebrag updates on Facebook lately. Here are a few favorite examples posted in the last month*:

“Five years ago this very day, I married the man I love. We danced to “L-O-V-E” as sung by Natalie Cole. Today, our anniversary, we plan to keep that dance going. Dearest Kevin, I do!”

Girl Talk: Flirting Over Social Media? That’s Micro-Infidelity

As I’ve watched the Weinergate scandal unfold over the past few days, I’ve related to the particulars in a discomforting way. Six months, I also found myself with a partner who flirted with a woman (at least, one woman that I know of) over the Internet. The unfaithfulness on my ex-boyfriend’s part — or his micro-infidelity, as I’ve come to think of it — is an indubitable reason why our relationship tanked. Although Rep. Anthony Weiner’s transgressions over Facebook and Twitter far exceed the ways my ex-boyfriend violated my trust, I nevertheless feel some woman-to-woman solidarity with Weiner’s wife, State Department aide Huma Abedin. She, too, is likely wondering where on the relativity scale — from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s hidden love child(ren) to dick pic tweets — she should classify the way her partner was unfaithful to her. Girl Talk: When Breakups Get Ugly

I guess I was lucky: I made it to age 26 without any really messy breakups. Sure, there were breakups that I thought were bad at the time. In the moment, they all felt terrible. But getting dumped after traveling an hour and a half to see someone or getting dumped on a sailboat in the middle of Long Island Sound — two breakups from my “Worst Of The Worst Highlights Reel” — mostly turned out to be good stories later. Hurt feelings soothed, cooler heads prevailed and I’m pretty much on friendly terms with everyone I’ve ever dated. I even had a coffee with one of my ex-boyfriends just recently. For better or for worse, I’m a deeply loyal and forgiving person. I see the best in people because I want to see the best in people. My most recent breakup was messy and nasty from the get-go and I’m adamant now that we can’t be friends. I put that relationship behind me as much as I could. So I was totally unprepared this week when it once again got unexpectedly nasty. Keep reading »

Twitter Scoops Media On Osama Bin Laden’s Death

Last night, at around 10 p.m. EST, I was lamenting the lack of incestuous sex on this week’s episode of “Game of Thrones” on my Twitter, when I saw something interesting come across my feed. A retweet of a message from the White House’s press secretary, saying the President would be making a statement at around 10:30 p.m. EST. No information was given on the subject matter, and further investigation on the various news outlets online showed that not only did the press not know what the Prez was going to discuss, but they hadn’t even updated their sites to indicate he would be giving a televised statement. Clearly, this was unplanned and the press got as much of a heads up about it as the rest of us. Keep reading »

What Your Facebook Wall Says About You

This weekend, as I posted my second Ryan Gosling-related YouTube video to my Facebook wall, I realized something. If you were to judge me based solely on what I posted on Facebook — from status updates to links to photos — you would accurately be able to conclude that I am a begrudgingly single 30-something cliche. The three things I post to my Facebook wall most often are 1) adorable photos of my dog, Lucca, 2) Ryan Gosling-related links, videos, and status updates, and 3) photos of myself posing with other people’s babies. As is typical of this type of Facebooker, I of course posted a self-deprecating Facebook status update saying as much, to which a friend replied, “Hey, ‘Cathy’ has retired.” Sigh.

Surely, I am not the only person whose personality can be quickly deciphered via the things we choose to post on Facebook. So, what does your Facebook wall say about YOU? Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Facebook Ruined My First Love

Facebook is really great for reconnecting with old friends and finding out what your buddies are up to. What it is also great for: shattering every illusion you ever had about your first love–just like it did for me this weekend.

I first spotted Jeremy when I was a sixth grade student at a public magnet school in Fort Worth, Texas. He looked exactly like Jay Underwood, the guy who played Tia’s loser boyfriend Bug in “Uncle Buck,” which is to say that he was incredibly hot. I never spoke to him — NEVER — but I rode the hour each way to school with him every day. And, it turned out, his mom was my English teacher. She was firm, but friendly — and she was my only link to the strange but beautiful creature that was her son. Sometimes I would stick around after class to see if he would stop by.

I never spoke to Jeremy, until the very last day I lived in Texas. My dad is a nuclear engineer, and growing up we moved a round a lot — from nuclear power plant to nuclear power plant. I used to joke that we were the modern-day Joads (a joke that only works if you are a Grapes of Wrath fan). We were moving from Ft. Worth to New Jersey, and I finally worked up the courage to tell Jeremy how I felt. I wrote him a letter telling him how interesting and unique I thought he was. I told him I was moving but that I’d like to write letters to him, if he wanted. I slipped the notebook paper to him as I was getting off the bus on my final interminable ride home. Keep reading »
