Did you catch “So You Think You Can Dance” last night? Another guy and girl dancer were eliminated (don’t worry, I won’t spoil the episode by telling you who, but SAD FACE), but not before the Top 16 performed. The talent this year is just so beyond, I don’t feel like any of them ever belong in the bottom three. I do, however, know what my favorite two numbers were — above, watch Amelia and Will do a fantastic jazz routine from choreographer Mandy Moore, Tiffany and George nail a fun hip-hop routine from Tabitha and Napoleon (who apparently call themselves “Nappy Tabs” now?), and Witney and Chehon score a standing ovation for their amazing contemporary dance.

Well, Amelia and Will, as Audrey and Matthew, have quickly emerged as my favorite couples on “So You Think You Can Dance,” but after last night’s episode, I wonder if they have choreographer Sonya Tayeh to thank, at least in part. She choreographed both couples’ routines last night and they were incredible. Watch both performances — as well as five performances from last week — above. Four dancers were eliminated last night, but I’ll keep my mouth shut on who went home.

“So You Think You Can Dance” is easily my favorite reality TV competition show — I think the dancing talent featured each season is astounding. I love that the show embraces all genres of dance and there’s a focus on for genuine expression, artistry, and creative above all else.

This season of “SYTYCD,” its ninth, quite possibly is the best yet and last night was the first live show featuring the top 20 dancers performing in pairs. Above, my five favorite performances: Amelia (love hearing Cat Deeley say my name each week!) and Will dancing hip-hop to the Cure’s “Lovecats”; Cyrus and Eliana doing a Broadway routine to a song from “Hairspray”; George and Tiffany dancing an amaaaazing contemporary routine from my favorite choreographer, Sonya; Alex and Daniel’s cool jazz routine; and Audrey and Matthew’s divine contemporary performance choreographed by “SYTYCD” alum Travis Wall. Okay, so I don’t know you if you guys watch “So You Think You Can Dance,” but if you like stories of human triumph, and also hot people, you will love this show. You will also love it for British judge and all around awesome dude Nigel Lythgoe, for whom I have the hots. Why do I love Nigel? Well, he’s a mega-zillionaire producer who worked on “American Idol” and “Pop Idol,” but rather than retiring to a boat off the coast of the Maldives or something, Lythgoe created “So You Think You Can Dance.” Because he loves dance!

5 Reasons We Love Cat Deeley

The hosts of reality competition shows are kind of like commercial breaks—necessary evils that you must endure in order to get your tele-fix. I tend to tune them out, their voices becoming like the “wah-wahs” of Charlie Brown’s teacher in “Peanuts.” Reality TV hosts are usually like an extension of the set—only there for decoration and functionality. Until now, there has never been a host I’ve given a crap about. But Cat Deeley, the model-esque host of “So You Think You Can Dance,” is not just a host. She’s a reason to watch the show. She actually adds entertainment value each week. I know, what a concept.

“So You Think You Can Dance” Uncovers Major Beatles Scandal?

To make a long story out of a short story — or perhaps the other way around — “So You Think You Can Dance” may have stumbled upon The Beatles scandal of the century at their Utah auditions. I couldn’t sleep last night and decided to catch up on a little “SYTYCD” — reality TV has the same effects on me as a glass of warm milk — and I caught contestant Brittany Morgan Starr, who revealed a big secret. Ringo Starr (of the famed band The Beatles, perhaps you’ve heard of them) is her father. Brittany claimed he is in permanent hiding while another man impersonates him in the public eye. I know, so wonderfully bizarre. According to Brittany, her dad, Ringo Starr (real name: Richard Starkey), signed a contract to have another man take his identity as Ringo Starr after John Lennon was shot. And bless FOX for taking us to meet her pops, the “real” Ringo. He turned out to be a toothless man with no discernible British accent in a Sgt. costume. Somehow, my gut tells me delusion runs in the family. At least judging from Brittany’s dance skills. These kinds of segments are exactly why I watch reality TV before bed. Keep reading »

When I started watching “So You Think You Can Dance,” my husband gave the entire living room a wide berth. He’d hear Mary Murphy’s banshee-like glee at putting a dancer on the “hot tamale train,” and off to headphone land he’d go. But, summer had just started, my graduate school employment had just ended, and it was the beginning of the recession. TiVo meant I could watch the show whenever I wanted. Katie Holmes Prances And Shimmies On “So You Think You Can Dance”

Last night on “So You Think You Can Dance,” Katie Holmes — yes, Mrs. Tom Cruise — performed a dance routine as an homage to Judy Garland and also to promote The Dizzy Feet Foundation, which provides art scholarships to children and teens. The charity is cool, the performance was meh. She looked fabulous and I think she does have a real presence on stage, but her dancing is only OK and her lip-syncing was, uh, off at times.
