9 Proud Sluts In History

Types Of Sluts
There's more than one, you know. Read More »

Here at The Frisky, we love sluts. When did being in charge of your sexuality become a bad thing? The word first appeared in the English language in the early 1400s as “slutte,” with the meaning being a dirty or slovenly woman. Today, nothing about being a slut has to be off-putting, given the proper accoutrements (condoms, everybody, please!). In fact, having sex for pleasure can be an exercise in healthy living and sound mental health. Promiscuity, and the ability to separate sex and physicality from emotional dependency and attachment, is not something of which to be ashamed.

Let’s take some time to honor proud sluts throughout history!

The 5 Different Types Of Sluts

The 5 Different Types Of Sluts
The other night I was hanging out with a girl friend gossiping about someone we know who has banged everyone else we know. “She’s such a slut,” my friend said, making a face. “Hey there!” I said. “That’s not like you. Usually you only call someone a ‘slut’ in a positive sense.” This girl friend and I are always tongue-in-cheek calling ourselves “sluts” because we love and enjoy sex and seek it out for pleasure the way that men do. “Why are you being pejorative about sluts all of a sudden?” I asked her. “I’m not being pejorative about all sluts,” she said. “I just think there’s different kinds of sluts. I f**k guys because I like f**king. She f**ks them despite not actually enjoying it.” I thought about it and realized she might be on to something. “Slut” may be the definition of a promiscuous women, but there’s all kinds of women who’ve had lots of sex partners. Here are five types of “sluts” you may not have considered.

Today’s Lady News: MSNBC Suspends Commentator One Week Without Pay For “Slut” Comments

  • MSNBC’s Ed Schultz was suspended for one week for calling talk radio host Laura Ingraham a “slut” twice on air. Sigh. There are many ways to call out Ingraham for her backwards politics. Calling her a slut shouldn’t be one of them. [The Wrap]
  • How much good did Oprah Winfrey do in her 25 years on air? While she did raise awareness about domestic violence, gay rights, eating disorders, and AIDS, she also devoted a hell of a lot of time shilling products that would make us fabulous and talking about weight loss. [Women In Media & News]
  • A Texas judge plans to void the marriage of a transgender woman, whose firefighter husband died last year on the job, so she cannot access his death benefits. The widow was born a man and because Texas does not recognize same-sex marriage, her husband’s family does not think she’s entitled to the money. Ugh, do any of these people have a heart? [Newser]

Kelly Osbourne Would Rather Be A Bitch Than A Slut

“This is something that my mom taught me when we [were] growing up in the industry and I don’t know how to word this, but you’re either a slut or a bitch, and I would rather be a bitch. I don’t want to, like, be a bulldog or anything. But I do get that from my mom.”

Kelly Osbourne on “Piers Morgan Tonight” sharing her mother Sharon Osbourne’s, uh, great advice for life in Hollywood. Bitch or slut? Those are the only options? [ONTD] Keep reading »

Kat Dennings In “Daydream Nation”: It’s Like “Easy A,” But Darker

Easy A,” starring Emma Stone, was a fun flick about a girl branded as a “slut” in high school. Funny it ’twas, but realistic? Not quite. “Daydream Nation” (which hits theaters on April 15 in Canada and May 6 in the U.S.) looks a hell of a lot more realistic. Kat Dennings stars as a high school girl who arrives in a new town with a reputation and, it seems from the trailer, sets her sights on both a hot guy and a hot teacher. Looks good!

But why is it that in every high school sex film, the guys are trying to get as much poon as possible and the girls — whether sexually active or virginal — are all dealing with getting called “sluts”? Seriously, you need a new script, Hollywood. [Lainey Gossip] Keep reading »

Activists To March On Toronto For A “SlutWalk”

What Are SlutWalks?

SlutWalks are sexually empowering for women! Read More »

All women are responsible for their own rapes, duh, which is why a Toronto police officer brilliantly advised the female students of Osgoode Hall Law School in January that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Yeah, a cop actually offered that as a “safety tip.” In response to this victim-blaming, “sluts and allies” are taking to the streets on April 3 for a SlutMarch. The activists organizing the event say they’re taking the term “slut” that the police officer used in a derogatory manner and re-appropriating as a point of pride, which I love. Canucks can find all the SlutWalk details here; we hope some Frisky readers will attend and tell us about it. Watch out, Toronto — the sluts are coming! (Thanks to commenter Taurwen for the post idea.) [SlutWalk Toronto, Excalibur CA] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Toronto Cop Says Don’t Dress Like A “Slut”

  • A cop speaking at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto suggested a woman could prevent sexual assault by not dressing like a “slut.” Also, men could prevent sexual assault by not sexually assaulting women. It’s that easy! [Excalibur]
  • Attention, men who like to “mansplain”: here are the things you can and can’t get away with saying about CBS reporter Lara Logan’s beating and sexual assault in Egypt last week. [Slate]
  • British model Claudia Aderotimi, who died recently from getting butt implants from a person unlicensed to perform plastic surgery, wanted to become a hip-hop video vixen. Claudia had silicone injected into her rear end at a Hampton Inn in Philadelphia, but the silicone poisoned her vascular system and she died shortly thereafter. [The Grio]
  • Oh good. South Dakota decided it’s not entirely reasonable to allow people to kill abortion providers as “justifiable homicide” for protecting the fetus. [New York Times]

Why I Like Being Called A Slut In Bed

That's Dirty Talk?
Romantic dirty talk has no place in the bedroom. Read More »

I get called a “slut” all the time. My friend Ashley calls me a slut like it’s my name: “Slut!” The Frisky staff calls each other sluts when we divulge our sexual escapades. Internet commenting trolls call me a slut fairly regularly (and a “bitch”, and a c-word, and plenty of other foul things). I call myself a slut, like, say, last week when I hooked up with a dude on the first date. A lot of 20-something women are used to being called a slut in some area of their lives, in every situation from “haha, just kidding” with our friends or (cool) co-workers to more serious areas, like when it’s hurled at us by a catcaller. “Slut” is one of those female-centric words — like “bitch,” like “feminist” — that can mean so many things that it almost means nothing anymore. Except, it turns out, in bed. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Duke Greeks Hosted Slutty Halloween Parties

  • Two Greek societies at Duke University sent Halloween party invitations to students that some say are inappropriate. Fraternity Sigma Nu implored women to dress as “a slutty nurse, a slutty doctor, a slutty schoolgirl, or just a total slut,” while Alpha Delta Pi’s email read, “Dear bitches, I mean witches.” (Note: Alpha Delta Pi is a sorority, but the Daily News article describes it as a “the off-campus fraternity Alpha Delta Pi.”) I don’t know, but I don’t find this that offensive. It’s just Halloween, people. [New York Daily News]
  • Clark Atlanta University will open The Domestic Violence Prevention Leadership Academy at its school of social work, partially with funding from Verizon, to train students to research the issue. [Atlanta Journal Constitution]
  • TIME spoke with Dr. Warren Hern, the last remaining abortion provider who publicly admits to doing late-term abortions. “I have been committed to this work since I started in 1973. I will continue doing it,” Hern said. “The people who disagree should leave me alone. It is the clear policy of the American anti-abortion movement to kill every doctor who does abortions. It is not a secret.” [TIME]

What’s Wrong With Dressing Slutty On Halloween?

Yes, we’ve all heard that “Mean Girls” quote about how Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut. And I’ll admit that the “sexy costume” craze has led to some weird combinations, like Sexy Chewbacca and Sexy Skunk. But every year, in the weeks leading up to our scariest holiday, the slut-shaming rises to a dull roar, and everybody starts saying things like, “When did Halloween become an excuse to dress up like a slut?”

The answer is ALWAYS. When I was in 6th grade, I begged my mother to let me dress up as a hooker, because Halloween has always been about dressing up like a slut. And you know why? Because it’s fun! Keep reading »
