Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University Law student who was called a “slut” and a “prostitute” by Rush Limbaugh last week, appeared on “The View” this morning. She utterly floored me with her articulation, composure and professionalism.

Three weeks ago, Fluke was barred from testifying to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committe about women’s access to affordable birth control. Instead an all-male panel trashed President Obama’s compromise on health care reform that if religiously-affiliated employers won’t pay for contraception for their employees, insurers must pick up the cost themselves. Sandra Fluke was later given an opportunity to testify to a group of Democrats, although it was not official, in which she explained how female students at Georgetown are struggling to pay the cost of birth control. Rush Limbaugh then attacked her on air, calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute,” and demanded she post videos of herself having sex online. Keep reading »

UPDATE, 3/3/12 at 6:30p.m: Rush Limbaugh issued an apology on his web site today to Sandra Fluke, a young woman he referred to earlier this week as a “slut” and “prostitute” during a discussion about birth control. In his apology, Limbaugh said:

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke. My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh’s chief of staff refused to tell The New York Times why the apology was issued. We’re hoping the advertiser pushback had something to do with it.  [Politico, New York Times]

Several advertisers have pulled ads from Rush Limbaugh’s radio show after he called a woman a “slut” and “prostitute” on air Wednesday and suggested that she film her sex acts and put them online. Activists Twitter-bombed Rush’s advertisers, threatening a boycott, and so far two sponsors — mattress stores Sleep Train and Sleep Number — have responded, promising they will cut off the dough. Sandra Fluke Will Not “Be Silenced” By Misogynist Blowhards Like Rush Limbaugh

“I guess my reaction is the reaction a lot of women have when they’ve been called these names. Initially you’re stunned but then, very quickly, you’re outraged because this is, historically, the kind of language that is used to silence women, especially women who stand up and say that these are their reproductive health care needs and this is what they need. And what’s been amazing to me today is the outpouring of support. Everyone from members of Congress to Georgetown faculty to so many women who’ve contacted me, and I think it’s clear from what they’ve said that they’re not going to be silenced by this.”

Sandra Fluke, the young woman who was denied the opportunity to testify in front of last month’s sausagefest hearing on birth control, tells MSNBC’s Ed Schultz exactly what she thinks about Rush Limbaugh calling her a slut. Yesterday, Limbaugh spewed, ”What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex — what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.” Also! “If we are going to pay for your contraceptives, and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you post the videos online so we can all watch.” Fluke was already awesome in my book, but this mature and astute response to a pig like Limbaugh just makes me admire her more. [The Stir]

The 10 Proudest Sluts Of 2011

The Best Of 2011!
Our picks for the best of the year in pop culture, style, sex, and more! Read More »

Slut. It’s an ugly word, isn’t it? Especially when it’s flung at you by some jerk who thinks the worst way he can insult a woman is by impugning her reputation. (Newsflash: it isn’t.)

But lots of unapologetically sexual ladies don’t let “slut” be a pejorative. Instead, they say, “Judgment be damned!” and wave their slut flag high and wide. They sleep with who they want, when they want, as much as they want, no matter what anyone else says.

In the spirit of embracing sluthood, let’s tip our hats to the bravely hedonistic women (and a few men!) who make up  The Frisky’s 10 Proudest Sluts Of 2011!

Today’s Lady News: Be Careful, Trick-Or-Treating Sluts!

Today's Lady News
  • Be careful, trick-or-treating sluts, because you might get raped! A conservative think tank-er named Charlotte Allen penned a piece for the Los Angeles Times about — I think? — how women shouldn’t tease men with skimpy outfits and then complain when we get raped. Or it might be about crazy, irrational feminists get upset by slutty Halloween costumes but then we throw SlutWalk protests and that makes us hypocrites. It’s hard to say. Anyway, the best part is when Allen warns us women to be “careful about where [you] flash [your] treasure.” I shall henceforth be referring to my ladyparts as my “treasure,” unironically. • California Baptist University expelled Domaine Javier, 24, for “fraud” and “identity concealment” after she came out as trans on an episode of MTV’s “True Life.”  [Queerty
  • The Michigan House of Representatives approved a bill to eliminate domestic partner benefits for all state employees. In response, the faculty at the University of Michigan are threatening a mass exodus if the bill passes. [Think Progress] Keep reading »

9 Proud Sluts In History

Types Of Sluts
There's more than one, you know. Read More »

Here at The Frisky, we love sluts. When did being in charge of your sexuality become a bad thing? The word first appeared in the English language in the early 1400s as “slutte,” with the meaning being a dirty or slovenly woman. Today, nothing about being a slut has to be off-putting, given the proper accoutrements (condoms, everybody, please!). In fact, having sex for pleasure can be an exercise in healthy living and sound mental health. Promiscuity, and the ability to separate sex and physicality from emotional dependency and attachment, is not something of which to be ashamed.

Let’s take some time to honor proud sluts throughout history!

The 5 Different Types Of Sluts

The 5 Different Types Of Sluts
The other night I was hanging out with a girl friend gossiping about someone we know who has banged everyone else we know. “She’s such a slut,” my friend said, making a face. “Hey there!” I said. “That’s not like you. Usually you only call someone a ‘slut’ in a positive sense.” This girl friend and I are always tongue-in-cheek calling ourselves “sluts” because we love and enjoy sex and seek it out for pleasure the way that men do. “Why are you being pejorative about sluts all of a sudden?” I asked her. “I’m not being pejorative about all sluts,” she said. “I just think there’s different kinds of sluts. I f**k guys because I like f**king. She f**ks them despite not actually enjoying it.” I thought about it and realized she might be on to something. “Slut” may be the definition of a promiscuous women, but there’s all kinds of women who’ve had lots of sex partners. Here are five types of “sluts” you may not have considered.

Today’s Lady News: MSNBC Suspends Commentator One Week Without Pay For “Slut” Comments

  • MSNBC’s Ed Schultz was suspended for one week for calling talk radio host Laura Ingraham a “slut” twice on air. Sigh. There are many ways to call out Ingraham for her backwards politics. Calling her a slut shouldn’t be one of them. [The Wrap]
  • How much good did Oprah Winfrey do in her 25 years on air? While she did raise awareness about domestic violence, gay rights, eating disorders, and AIDS, she also devoted a hell of a lot of time shilling products that would make us fabulous and talking about weight loss. [Women In Media & News]
  • A Texas judge plans to void the marriage of a transgender woman, whose firefighter husband died last year on the job, so she cannot access his death benefits. The widow was born a man and because Texas does not recognize same-sex marriage, her husband’s family does not think she’s entitled to the money. Ugh, do any of these people have a heart? [Newser]

Kelly Osbourne Would Rather Be A Bitch Than A Slut

“This is something that my mom taught me when we [were] growing up in the industry and I don’t know how to word this, but you’re either a slut or a bitch, and I would rather be a bitch. I don’t want to, like, be a bulldog or anything. But I do get that from my mom.”

Kat Dennings In “Daydream Nation”: It’s Like “Easy A,” But Darker

Easy A,” starring Emma Stone, was a fun flick about a girl branded as a “slut” in high school. Funny it ’twas, but realistic? Not quite. “Daydream Nation” (which hits theaters on April 15 in Canada and May 6 in the U.S.) looks a hell of a lot more realistic. Kat Dennings stars as a high school girl who arrives in a new town with a reputation and, it seems from the trailer, sets her sights on both a hot guy and a hot teacher. Looks good!

But why is it that in every high school sex film, the guys are trying to get as much poon as possible and the girls — whether sexually active or virginal — are all dealing with getting called “sluts”? Seriously, you need a new script, Hollywood. [Lainey Gossip] Keep reading »
