What’s Wrong With Dressing Slutty On Halloween?

Yes, we’ve all heard that “Mean Girls” quote about how Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut. And I’ll admit that the “sexy costume” craze has led to some weird combinations, like Sexy Chewbacca and Sexy Skunk. But every year, in the weeks leading up to our scariest holiday, the slut-shaming rises to a dull roar, and everybody starts saying things like, “When did Halloween become an excuse to dress up like a slut?”

The answer is ALWAYS. When I was in 6th grade, I begged my mother to let me dress up as a hooker, because Halloween has always been about dressing up like a slut. And you know why? Because it’s fun! Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: UF Professor Fired For Saying Latinas Dress Sluttier Than American Women

  • A University of Florida professor was fired for saying Latina women dress sluttier than American women during a lecture on sexual harassment, apparently in reference to the sports reporter Ines Sainz. Timothy Taylor has filed a grievance complaint alleging his academic freedom has been stifled. UF is having none of it, considering Taylor was suspended twice before for “inappropriate interactions with female students,” like touching their hair, and was told further inappropriate behavior would get him canned. Why would the school keep someone around so long who had so many complaints against him? [Miami Times]
  • Unprofessionalism alert: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand at a recent event by saying, “We in the Senate refer to Sen. Gillibrand as the hottest member.” Witnesses said Sen. Gillibrand turned red and the audience started tittering. Tell me, Sen. Reid, would you introduce a male senator this way, too? [Feministing]
  • Abortion clinics in Louisiana are suing over a new state law that gives the state health department unprecedented control to shut them down over health and safety concerns. Right after the law went into effect this summer, a Shreveport abortion clinic had its license suspended for several weeks. [CNBC]

The Insane Double Standard Of Angelina Vs. Ronnie Creeping On “Jersey Shore”

angelina pivarnik photo

Sometimes being a feminist means sticking up for someone you hate when she is being treated wrong. That feminist is me and the person I hate is Angelina from “Jersey Shore.” Angelina is the embodiment of every awful characteristic in a human being: duplicitous, slimy, back-stabbing. None of her “Jersey Shore” cast members like or trust Angelina and call her the “Staten Island dump” to her face. Really, the girl’s lack of self-awareness would be amusing if it weren’t so sad.

One person does like Angelina, though: Jose, a gent from Miami who buys her a Fossil watch after two dates. Angelina takes the watch from Jose, but then “smushes” with Vinny during a drunken night of bad decisions. The cast will have none of this. They call Angelina a “whore” and a “slut.” The Situation goes up to Jose at the club one night to say Angelina has something she needs to tell him. Keep reading »

Can You Tell A Slut By What She’s Wearing?

Cue the eyeroll. A British celeb style website called MyCelebrityFashion polled men on their girlfriends’ clothes and asked, “What trends make women look promiscuous?” Because you can tell a slut by what she’s wearing, duh.

Frisky Q&A: Roxana Shirazi, Author Of “The Last Living Slut: Born In Iran, Bred Backstage”

A chat with Roxana Shirazi is a delight. She’s thoughtful, articulate and you just want to steal that lovely, soft-spoken British accent out of her throat and run off with it. So it’s pretty easy to forget this London-based Iranian author has written the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll memoir about insatiable sex drives, peeing on rock stars, and cunnilingus with groupies.

The Last Living Slut: Born In Iran, Bred Backstage is one of the craziest memoirs I’ve ever read and not just for the stunning narrative arc. Although she writes about childhood growing up in Tehran, Iran, during the Iranian Revolution, and the sexual and physical abuse she suffers from her friends and family, Roxana also gives us a peek into a balls-out, X-rated life most of us couldn’t imagine. Co-published by Neil Strauss, author of The Game, and Anthony Bozza, her book is also about becoming a teenage belly dancer at underground London clubs, then a rock ‘n’ roll scenester who beds her rock star idols — guys from Guns N’ Roses and Buckcherry, to name just a few.

It’s funny. It’s gross. And it’s unlike any memoir I’ve ever read. So I called up the woman who carries around a vibrator in her purse and asked Roxana Shirazi to talk about growing up in a fundamentalist Islamic culture, her abortion, female jealousy, and the meaning of the word “slut.” Keep reading »

Facebook’s “100 Biggest Sluts” Page Creator Could Face Stalking Charges

The Australian who created a Facebook page called “100 Biggest Sluts of Ballarat” will soon learn the list was not only cruel, but criminal! [FYI: Ballarat is a regional city in Victoria, Australia.] Police say the 60 women who contacted them after being called “sluts” on the nasty page (which has since been taken down) could each seek a charge of stalking against the site’s creator. Yes, stalking. Apparently, slut-shaming one’s fellow Ballarat-ians online is illegal. “Stalking covers quite a large range of actions and one of them is using the computer to offend or harass a particular person,” Detective Craig Dooley told Perth Now. Cops say they interviewed someone in relation to the incident, but are still looking for more info.

We hope this Facebook-ing fool never gets laid again. That’ll teach him/her to mess with angry sluts! [Perth Now and The Age] Keep reading »

Jenny Loses Her Virginity On “Gossip Girl” And, Of Course, It’s A Disaster

There I was, minding my own business on Monday night, when I noticed “Jenny Humphrey” from “Gossip Girl” became a trending topic on Twitter, i.e., something everyone is tweeting about. Jenny Humphrey, of course, is the precocious 16-year-old budding fashion designer from Brooklyn, played by Taylor Momsen. With her older brother, Dan, young Jenny attends a fancy Upper East Side prep school; she just wants to be accepted by the rich kids, who dismiss her as a social climber. I clicked on the trending topic and saw hundreds of tweets saying things like, “Jenny Humphrey is a ho!” and “I hate Jenny Humphrey, she’s such a skank!”

Clearly, this involved further investigation. Keep reading »

Quotable: Promiscuous Women Cause … Earthquakes?

“Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.”

Tina Fey: Not Feminist Enough?

I knew this was going to happen: Tina Fey hosted “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend and yesterday morning, our fellow lady blogs were all abuzz with complain-y posts. Bloggers I read and respect, including Sady Doyle at Feministe, Jessica Grose at Double X, and Irin Carmon at Jezebel, took to their blogs to react to Fey‘s hosting gig. And I understand why women were watching, fingers poised to the keyboard: Whip-smart and witty Fey is a role model for millions of women and girls.

Still, I’ll bet Jude Law didn’t have to deal with being over-analyzed to death the Monday morning after he hosted. Keep reading »

Dear Wendy: “Everyone Thinks I’m A Slut”

I’m 21 years old, and have had 11 sexual partners. I have been in relationships with men I was always faithful to. I have never had a one-night stand, and I am very careful when it comes to practicing safe sex. I still talk to most of the men I have been with, since most were good friends of mine before we slept together, and overall I am perfectly happy with my choices. On a personal level, I have no regrets. However, I cannot seem to get away from that awful word “slut.” I am well aware that I have slept with more men than most girls my age, but I believe we all go through different routes to find happiness and our soul mates. But other people think differently, and I have been judged and called a slut more times than I can count. I have begun seeing a new man, and we have not slept together yet. He is a great guy, but I am scared to tell him how many partners I have had. I am afraid he is going to think I am a slut, and even though he might not say it, he will think less of me. How do I approach telling him, or should I? I won’t apologize for something I don’t feel is wrong, but at the same time I understand that being with a girl who has had a lot of sexual partners can be difficult, and intimidating. And how do I stop it from getting to me that people think I am such a slut? I’m happy with my choices, why can’t people just leave it alone? — Sexually Active in Vermont
