NYPD “Rape Cop” Accuser Speaks Out About Verdict

The woman who accused NYPD officer Kenneth Moreno of raping her in own home while his partner, Franklin Mata, stood watch, released a statement yesterday responding to the jury’s acquittal. The 29-year-old woman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, says that the verdict “brought me to my knees” and is “overwhelmed by the support” offered by those who have chosen “to speak up in my honor.” The media has already given Moreno’s wife Julia the opportunity to trash the accuser, so I feel it’s only fair to print her statement in full, after the jump… Keep reading »

Meet Julia Moreno: Newspapers Give The “Rape Cop”‘s Wife A Platform To Trash Alleged Victim

“SHE CAN GO TO HELL: Says woman ‘made up’ rape for money.”

That was the cover story headline on The New York Post on Sunday morning.

The woman who can go to hell? The 29-year-old fashion executive who accused an NYPD officer of raping her when she was blackout drunk one night in 2008. The woman damning her? Julia Moreno, the accused cop’s wife, who swears his innocence. Keep reading »

Sex Ranking List Of Girls At High School Not Criminal, Expert Says

A 17-year-old high school student from a Chicago suburb was arrested Monday for allegedly creating and distributing a list of 50 classmates ranked in terms of their sexual desirability.

To be sure, it must have been humiliating for these girls to be derided with nicknames like “Fallen Angel,” “Blond Bombshell” and “The Hangover” — and to have their body parts and supposed level of promiscuity rated on a 10-point ranking system — while the lunchroom gang howled in amusement.

But as troubling as these accusations are, could a charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct, which the boy now faces, possibly stick? Not according to one expert. Read more… Keep reading »

Florida Lawmaker Says 11-Year-Old Gang Rape Victim Was “Dressed Like A Prostitute”

Student dress codes are a controversial topic, but there is no justification at all for blaming a rape victim for the way she was dressed. While arguing in favor of a dress code for Florida students, Republican State Representative Kathleen Passidomo referenced the 11-year-old Cleveland, Texas, girl who was gang raped by 18 men in November and whose ordeal was recently reported in The New York Times. Passidomo said:

“There was an article about an 11-year-old girl who was gang raped in Texas by 18 young men because she was dressed like a 21-year-old prostitute. And her parents let her attend school like that. And I think it’s incumbent upon us to create some areas where students can be safe in school and show up in proper attire so what happened in Texas doesn’t happen to our students.”

Oh. Hell. No. Keep reading »

NYT Gang Rape Article Mentions Victim, Age 11, Wore Makeup And “Dressed Older”

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for The New York Times defended the article to Yahoo.com’s Cutline blog yesterday and the paper also published a critical letter to the editor online.

A tragic gang rape story out of Cleveland, Texas, has been made all the more worse by a New York Times article that tells us the 11-year-old victim hung out with teenaged boys, wore makeup, and “dressed older.” So many journalistic aspects of this New York Times article, written by James C. McKinnley, Jr., are so badly handled with regards to sensitivity towards sexual assault victims that it makes me want to haul their entire editorial team in for an educational session on rape myths. Shape Magazine Apologizes For Putting “Husband Stealer” LeAnn Rimes On Cover

Shape magazine needs to grow a pair. LeAnn Rimes appeared on the cover of the October issue, in a story about how working out helped her get through her divorce from husband Dean Sheremet and the negative publicity surrounding her relationship with Eddie Cibrian. LeAnn and Eddie, of course, started their romance while they were both still married and apparently some of Shape‘s readers did not appreciate the magazine putting an OMG adulteress on the cover. In response, editor-in-chief Valerie Latona sent an email to subscribers apologizing for the “terrible mistake” in putting a “husband stealer” on the cover. Keep reading »

Anti-Binge Drinking Campaign Slut-Shames Drunk Girls

Curbing dangerous binge drinking on a college campus? An admirable goal. Slut-shaming women whose inhibitions melt away when soused? Not so much.

The University of Minnesota debuted a new anti-binge drinking campaign called “The Other Hangover,” which warns students to think about how their reputation will be tarnished if they do stupid things while drunk. It was created by students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications for the 2009 National Student Advertising Competition. It’s an ad campaign blitzkrieg with billboards, coasters, sidewalk clings, magnets, and mirror clings all around the campus. Some of the sentiments on “the social consequences” of drinking: “‘But I was drunk,’ doesn’t repair the friendship” or “Just because you were drunk, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen,” which is innocuous enough. But others are straight-up slut-shaming young adults for being sexual. Keep reading »
