Dear Wendy: “Skype Sex With My Long-Distance Boyfriend Is Awkward”

When I moved out of the country four months ago to take a pretty sweet job abroad, my boyfriend and I decided to do the long-distance thing, and so far everything is great. We haven’t really had any issues other than lack of sleep due to staying up all night on Skype because of the time difference. Recently, we started having some frisky Skype sex sessions. After a couple frustrating attempts on my part, I have secretly started opening up windows and watching porn on silent to help me out. While this works like a charm, a part of me feels guilty, especially since I can see the action side-by-side with my boyfriend and he has no idea. It’s not that I’m not attracted to him … he’s so hot and he definitely turns me on, but I think it’s just nerves and anxiety about having video sex, so I need the extra help. My question is, do I have any reason to be feeling guilty? Is this any different than people picturing themselves with other people while having real sex? Is this something I can mention to my boyfriend, or would it be a complete blow to his ego? Can’t Be There? Set Up A Skype Date

I like to think I discovered using the internet to make phone calls long before anyone else did. The year was 2000, and I was backpacking through Asia and had stopped in Calcutta, India to visit with my friend’s extended family. My friend’s cousin and I had gone out nightclubbing and when we returned to his apartment at two o’clock in the morning, he offered for us to call my friend back in San Francisco, for free. Calling from Asia was pricey enough for me to stick to email throughout most of my travels, and I envisioned us breaking Indian law when I watched him put on some headphones and sit down at his computer to make our phone call. The next thing I knew, I sat like a customer service representative with my headphones and talked to my friend while she shopped through Chinatown. After a quick laugh and a shock to her system to hear from her cousin and me, we noted that the connection wasn’t half-bad and marveled that we could chat for nothing while halfway across the world.

After having studied abroad and living far away from my Texas based family most of the year, skyping has become as crucial as a cellphone or computer for me. Webcams sadly, have their downfalls. Chatting with my boyfriend is hard enough knowing I run the risk of him getting distracted by Terminator 3 on TV or his needy dog but, when he does look up, hes always looking down. German designer Aram Bartholl is officially my hero after creating a neat DIY contraption that makes you look straight at the person you’re talking with online instead of down at a corner.
