Jacquard refers to the process of creating intricately woven patterns in fabric. It doesn’t matter if you’re making flowers, squares or portraits of your favorite pet — it’s the process that makes something jacquard or not. I love jacquards, especially for evening wear, because they typically have a bit of weight and heft to them, which helps smooth the lines of a silhouette. With that in mind, we’ve picked ten of the best jacquard skirts around. Dress ‘em up with a silk shirt or down with a chambray, take your pick!
Fed up with the idea that women are somehow inviting rape by wearing “immodest” clothing, a group of men in Bangalore, India, have taken to wearing skirts in protest. Their protest comes right after the recent gang rape and brutal beating death of Jyoti Singh Pandey, and the men wanted to show solidarity. The protesters are also wearing signs that say “teach your sons not to rape” and “men, don’t skirt the issue — speak up, support women.”
“The point of this protest isn’t to rally or shout slogans, but rather show how wearing a skirt is just normal and that a piece of clothing cannot invite rape,” said Samarpita Samaddar, one of the protest’s organizers. After weeks of nothing but horrible news coming from India, it’s inspiring to hear these men stand up for women. [CNN]

A theme park in Guilin, China is giving a discount to women if they wear a skirt shorter than 38 centimeters. Merryland Resort’s Love Miniskirts discount runs for the next two months and is the sixth year it has thrown the event. “The stipulation aims to encourage female visitors to showcase their beauty in summer,” the deputy manager of the park, told Shanghai Daily newspaper. As you can see in the video above, women actually get their skirts measured with rulers before entering the park. Seems reminiscent of Catholic school rules to me, but in a completely opposite, exploitative way. Anyway, that theme park must be a creep’s paradise! Do you think discounts for miniskirts are gross or would you happily don a miniskirt if it got you in the gates with a cheaper ticket? [Telegraph UK]
Imagined conversation at the Steve Madden clothing factory:
“Sir, there’s been an accident. A huge batch of black jersey skirts got pulled through a shredder.”
“No problem! Just market them as swimsuit coverups and charge double the price!”
And voila, the “short hula skirt coverup” was born. [$42, Zappos]
I’m, like, 99 percent sure that this mini skirt is actually a hand towel, which is why I’m extra confused about the fact that it cost $955 full price, and $286 on sale. I mean, for those kind of prices, I’d expect at least a full size bath towel. [Shopbop]
