If you couldn’t already tell, using natural skincare is incredibly important to me. I have extremely sensitive skin that reacts negatively to anything it could possibly react negatively to — sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, many things with weird chemical-sounding names and, lo and behold, most drugstore makeup and skincare (woe!). I really just can’t use anything that isn’t geared towards sad, sensitive people like me. I’m really into skincare, and while most people can shop themselves silly at drugstores without a huge price tag and without worrying about the consequences, I just can’t. I have to wait and eventually shell out the big bucks for something that won’t make me break out, whether it be in blemishes or in hives. Keep reading »

5 Green Skincare Companies Worth Every Penny

We’re now 12 days into Earth Month, and to celebrate, we’ve been calling attention to all things eco-friendly, sustainable and planet-conscious. I’m not going to front like I’m the greenest person on earth, because I’m far from it, but when it comes to things I’m putting on my face and body, I insist on keeping my routine as natural as possible. The unfortunate catch-22 of natural skincare is that it’s often pricier than its chemical-filled counterparts for obvious reasons: much like organic food, organic beauty products are simply made of better, more expensive ingredients. If there’s one area where you’re going to splurge, though, it should be skincare (in my opinion, of course). Your face just isn’t the place to skimp on! The good thing is that there are more natural options out there than ever before and a range of prices and products from which to choose from. Allow me to introduce you to my five favorite brands for clean, green skincare — they may not be a bargain, exactly, but they are worth it.

We all want airbrushed smooth skin without having to pay the hundreds of dollars fancy airbrush makeup kits cost, am I right? Thank God for BB Cream, a masterful all-in-one cream that does the job of an airbrush makeup without the high cost. Smashbox’s BB Cream is lightweight and airy, and comes with SPF 35. It’s an all-in one, and moisturizes, primes, perfects, controls oil, and protects for flawless skin. You can wear it as a primer underneath foundation, or alone as a light base for bronzer and blush. Either way, BB Cream is my new go-to for glow-y, even-toned skin, without spending a zillion bucks in the process. [$39, Sephora]

Skincare used to be a whole daunting arena of the beauty industry that I avoided out of fear. My dry, sensitive skin is so fickle. I washed daily with Cetaphil, scrubbed once or twice a week with St. Ives Apricot Scrub, and glopped on a pricy Bliss face mask every month or so. Most days I removed my makeup before going to bed, but not always, because I am lazy. My skin neither looked nor felt particularly good or particularly bad — just kinda blah and dry, as usual.

In the past few months, I’ve gotten really into skincare for my criminally dry visage.  I’ve added new skincare products to my arsenal, which I’ll save for Beauty Test Drives another day. My skin has really been perking up, to the point where The Frisky’s boss has been complimenting me! And for the past few days, I have been using a little handheld device called the Clarisonic Mia 2. No joke, it’s already making my skin look and feel amazing.  Keep reading »

Makeup Bag: 10 Skin-Saving Sunscreens For The Face

I hate wearing sunscreen, which is particularly unfortunate when you consider that I have the whitest, most translucent, most easily burnt skin this side of hole in the ozone layer. I rarely sunbathe, given that as a mole creature I shrivel when exposed to sunlight, but I will admit to a few incidents when I was in high school that involved careless “tanning” with Italian friends whose skin bronzed to perfection in the rays. I basked enviously that afternoon, confident that I, too, would grow tan if I followed their lead. Wrong. So wrong. I’ll spare you the details, but I was vivid, unmistakable scarlet by nightfall, and I still have residual freckles from the incident. It’s a wonderful recipe for skin cancer, which I sincerely hope I do not get. Keep reading »

It’s Boscia, not blackface. Boscia’s done some amazing marketing because the instant I saw this on the shelf at Sephora, I had to have it. A peel-off mask that’s as thick as tar? I imagined it pulling off my entire face to reveal what I always knew was lying below: Scarlett Johansson. Sadly, that did not happen. But, I was pretty happy with the results. Boscia’s mask promises to boost “…skin clarity and radiance. Removes dirt and impurities while refining the look of pores.” This is a mineral-rich mask made of premium clay that will strip away excess oil and naturally exfoliate. Keep reading »
