(Sperm) Size Matters

Size may not matter in the human world, but when it comes to other animals and insects, giant sperm is the way to go, especially if the creature has a tiny body. A mussel-like animal that lived 100 million years ago produced sperm that was longer than its body. Even today, there are animals making large sperm. A fruit fly can produce a 2.5-inch coil of sperm, even though its body is only a few milliliters. To equal the same sperm to body ratio, a human would have to produce sperm 40 meters long. Ostracodes, an extinct ancient class of arthropods, also produced long sperm. With these findings scientists have concluded that giant sperm production is a proven, evolutionary tactic for successful reproduction. Seven (Inches) Or Better

There’s a new online dating site for those women who think size definitely matters. 7OrBetter.com only accepts men who are packing at least seven inches of artillery. The site was conceived under the premise that women want to know what their date is working with before investing too much wasted time. But they can’t exactly ask for that info on the first or second date — so now they can know upfront. But don’t expect any sleazy talk or nudity — because the members are supposed to be “quality” people looking for a “quality” relationship. So, I’m guessing it’s like an eHarmony for above-average men? The one plus is that the site is free. The biggest negative? There are probably about 10 guys for every 1,000 women. There’s no explanation as to how the site guarantees the men’s size, but let’s hope girth is measured, as well as length, because pencils are about as much fun as a stubby crayon. Keep reading »

How Beetles Pick Up Girls

Different types of people employ different strategies to get lucky — really attractive people go up and ask people out directly, slightly less stunning individuals tend to win others over with their charming personality — and sap beetles’ mate-attracting techniques vary, as well.

Like über-cool football players, the largest beetles just hang out near the females’ feeding areas because they can fight off their competitors, Ecological Entomology reports. The medium-sized beetles might be compared to track stars. They’ve developed larger wings and fly around searching for feeding sites that aren’t occupied by the big guys. The smallest beetles have advantages that aren’t apparent, but their testicles are larger and can produce more sperm than the larger males.
