Nerd alert!  I feel very “Lord of the Rings” whenever I read about the “fall” of men: dramatic, old fashioned, and spoken in Cate Blanchett’s voice.  And the conversation (like the trilogy) seems never-ending.  From Hanna Rosin’s book The End of Men to Charles Murray’s Coming Apart, everybody must add their two cents about why male incomes as a whole are declining.

So here’s mine.  I personally find this male-centric view frustrating.  Yes, according to a 2010 USA Today article, women are entering institutions of higher education at record-high rates, surrpassing that of men. Though I may think, Who cares?  Men have been dominating for millennia!, economists are worried about employment eligibility and opportunity for men. As reported by The New York Times, a new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor David H. Autor, takes a stab at explaining this puzzling societal problem. Keep reading »

I’m going to propose something that may seem radical, given the hysteria that single motherhood seems to conjure in American society. The typical single mother? She doesn’t exist.

As a solo-parenting mother (which is different than a single parent — this is a nuanced “issue” my friends!), I’ve searched high and low to find out if a significant portion of single moms are representative of the stereotype that politicians, moralizing religious groups, and census statistics tell me are single (puns!) handedly causing a rise in childhood poverty. All I’ve managed to find is a group of people as diverse as our married counterparts. Keep reading »

Senator Rick Santorum — long known for his insightful analyses of same-sex marriage (a mere gateway, as he alluded, to human-dog couples) and more recently for his repudiation of education — proclaimed in 1994 that before single mothers continued on their heedless quest to destroy the “fabric of the country,” they needed a swift “kick in the butt.”

I was a single mom, living separately from my child’s father or any other adult, until my son was four. I worked full-time in order to support myself and my child and, during that time, there were many things I needed: child care that I could both trust and afford, health insurance (I worked freelance and was responsible for paying for own medical care), and the occasional night off. Topping that list, I now realize, should have been a kick in the butt.

Frankly, I’m flattered that a busy family man of Santorum’s stature would be willing to take time out of his day to spur me on, literally, as a responsible cowboy would his trusty (but, face it, lazy) horse. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Mike Huckabee Slams Natalie Portman For Having Baby “Out Of Wedlock”

  • Republican presidential nominee wannabe Mike Huckabee opened his big gaping maw to condemn Natalie Portman for having a baby “out of wedlock” with her fiancé, Benjamin Millipied. Huckabee criticized Portman on a conservative radio show.
“One of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”

I see the point Huckabee is getting at, but I’d say the bigger problem isn’t the single moms but the dads who choose not to be in their kids lives or who aren’t worthy of being there. Why cast judgment on the single mothers alone? [The Huffington Post]

Can Someone Explain Why Sandra Bullock’s Adoption Is “Sweet Revenge”?

Wronged wife Sandra Bullock dropped the bombshell-of-all-bombshells when she announced on the cover of People magazine yesterday that she adopted a baby boy in January. And while I’m happy as a clam for Sandra and little Louis Bardo Bullock, I also find the way the media’s handling the story to be quite odd.

The New York Daily News‘ cover today says “Sweet Revenge!” and teases an article on their website about Sandra’s adoption with the line, “She doesn’t need a big baby like Jesse — she’s got a real one now.” Metro (a free newspaper handed out in big cities) trumpets, “Sandy’s Trump Card? Her Secret Adoption.”

I’m sorry, but why is a newborn baby a “trump card” or “sweet revenge”? Keep reading »
