Silly grownups, Silly Bandz are for kidz! Well, they were until some perverts decided to get in on the trend. First there were Sexy Bands, now there are “Wear A Willy Bands” (see above video). I have to say, the Sexy Bands that came in different sexual positions at least seemed like a fun game to play, like: “Pick a bracelet off my wrist, and that’s what we’ll do next!” But the peen options just aren’t nearly as cool as unicorns, guitars, and dinosaurs. Silly Bandz. Where do I even start? Where did they come from? How did they become popular? What’s the point of them? I don’t get it. They’re annoying. But hey, kids will be kids. And part of being a kid is hopping on the “silly trends” train. Yes, I had slap bracelets in 1990. But Silly Bandz for adult use? Hell no.

When I was kid, I was a big trend follower. I got a Furby and carried it in a basket around school and tried to teach it bad words. I threw a fit when I left my Tamagotchi at home during a family trip, and came back to find it sick from being surrounded by its own digital poops for over 48 hours. Basically I was a little bit of a fad whore, riding whatever wave was popular. But once I hit a certain age—I’ll say 13—it stopped and I realized that I spent most of my childhood buying ridiculous plastic contraptions to seem cool, only to have them replaced by something even more hip. Cast Your Bets: Guess The Day Of The Great Silly Bandz Die-Off

It’s easy to feel like you have no power when you’re a kid. But when it comes to fads and trends, the kid consumer controls which youth product companies will live and die. For the most part, the obsessions we grew up with—slap bracelets, pogs, Beanie Babies—all croaked. Today’s kiddies are all about Silly Bandz, the rubber band bracelets that have been terrorizing schools across America (and banned from them in many cases). Of course, retail analysts, drawing upon past failures, suggest that the brand needs to branch out; otherwise, it will just be another example studied in “Consumerism Failures 101.” Knowing how fickle we were as kids and how ridiculous these accessories are, we predict they’ll fade into oblivion fast … maybe even by the time you’ve finished reading this article.
