Rent The Runway Will Now Offer Dresses Up To Size 22

Rent the Runway has been the go-to for special occasions since its inception in 2009. Need a catwalk-worthy dress or purse for an event, but don’t have the funds to cash in on it? Rent the Runway hooks it up for a diminutive fraction of its original price (think a Vera Wang gown for $275 instead of $2,000), provided you return your items within the allotted 4- or 8-day window. But despite its obvious advantages, and its convenience factor, the service has always seriously lacked in one area: plus sizes.

CEO Jenn Hyman gathered a who’s who of the fashion industry’s top plus-size bloggers and journalists to introduce the brand’s exciting new endeavor. Hyman told the crowd that when she first launched Rent the Runway, she asked designers to offer wares for sizes 0 through 22, and found herself “laughed out of the room.” But with the passage of time, and the growing acceptance of increased sizes in the industry at large, Rent the Runway will now offer styles from designers like Carmen Marc Valvo, Badgley Mischka, and Theia (a few examples shown above) up to a size 22. Hyman went on to say, “We are so proud that our business has grown enough that we are finally able to make designer fashion not only accessible to, but also inclusive of, women of all shapes and sizes.” [Fashionista]

Terminally ill woman pays off 16 layaway bills at kmart

Last week, an unnamed woman walked into a Kmart store in Auburn, Maine. Shoppers who saw her say she looked weak and tired, leaning on shelves and taking frequent breaks on her way to the layaway counter, where she told the staff she was terminally ill and wanted to do something nice before she died. Fifteen minutes later, she had paid off 16 balances for layaway bills, to the tune of $3,000. She left without being identified, but is now known as Auburn’s “Layaway Angel.”  Keep reading »

Journeys Store Staff Quits In The Middle Of The Day To Protest Their Terrible Manager

Have you ever had a boss who was so disrespectful, mean, and universally hated that the entire staff spent their breaks fantasizing about slipping an ex-lax into that “World’s Best Boss” mug and/or staging a group walkout? The staff at a Journeys store in a Rochester mall did just that — well, the walkout part, not sure about the ex-lax thing — when they decided to simultaneously quit and close up the store in the midst of the insanely busy back-to-school season to teach their evil district manager a lesson. The best part? They left a note on the store’s security gate to ensure the world knew the extent of their boss’s sins, which apparently includes telling her employees that “cancer is not an excuse.” Eeeesh. Sounds like these employees made the right call. [Gawker]

Shelby Buster was celebrating her birthday the way many 14-year-olds do — by taking a trip to the local mall in her hometown of Eugene, Oregon. She and a friend popped into a store called Rue 21 where Buster was planning to buy some perfume with her birthday money when she was approached by a store employee. According to Buster, the employee decided to forgo a traditional customer greeting in favor of a much ruder message: “Hey, you’re too big to be in this store, I need you to leave.” Buster and her friend went to get her mom, who escorted the girls back to the store and demanded an apology on her daughter’s behalf. One of the employees eventually apologized, but when Buster got home, she decided to share her story publicly, writing “Thanks for ruining my birthday, Rue 21!” on the company’s Facebook page. The 10 Most Heinous Plus-Sized Pieces From “WTF Plus”

Why for the love of all that’s holy do designers continue to make only the most heinous of options for plus sized women? What would be the harm in, oh I don’t know, giving plus sized women the same clothing options as straight-sized women? Oh no! We couldn’t possibly treat all women with the same respect regardless of their size. We all know that a woman’s worth is only defined by her beauty, and beauty is of course only based on size. The Huffington Post pointed us in the direction of WTF Plus Size Clothing Manufacturers? and it’s both hilarious and upsetting. We’ve written about just how unacceptably ugly plus size clothing is recently, and this tumblr shows us some concrete examples. We need more people to call out manufacturers for the way they treat anything other their straight-sized customers. Read more at The Gloss…

Eat your heart out Mr. Big! A California man named Paul Brockman has trounced even your most extravagant romantic gestures by buying his wife, Margot, 55,000 dresses over the course of their 56-year marriage, enough to fill a large warehouse. The decades-long shopping spree began when the couple started going ballroom dancing, and Paul insisted Margot have a brand new dress to wear to each of their weekly dances. Margot didn’t like shopping, so Paul would buy her new dresses before and after work at his construction job. By 1988, Margot’s dress collection totaled 25,000. Today it’s 55,000. Crazy, right? But the craziest part of this story is that Margot didn’t even want the dresses, and Paul has actually been buying them in secret and storing them in shipping containers for years. Whaaaaaaat?!?! shopping

Do you ever think about how and why you shop? Is it out of necessity? As therapy? To problem-solve? Earlier this week a friend asked me to participate in a survey about shopping habits. For an hour, I laid it all bare, telling a room full of random strangers about the things I purchased, why I bought stuff, and my retail shopping experiences. And let me tell you, it was not pretty.

Well, that was depressing, I thought, as I gathered my things and left the small conference room where I’d confessed all my wicked shopping sins. I might just have a problem. In the spirit of spilling the dirt and getting it off my chest, I suppose I should share my shopping truths with you. After the jump, some of the not-very-smart choices I’ve made when it comes to shopping and spending money.

“I will be a reluctant bridesmaid in a family member’s wedding next month. The bride is having us wear silver evening shoes, either sandals or open-toe pumps, with this dusty purple (‘wisteria,’ hello) gown. Now, buying silver shoes on a budget is pretty much a one-way ticket to trashy town, but I refuse to spend over $200 on a pair of shoes that I’ll probably never wear again. Can you help me find a pair of affordable silver open-toe shoes that aren’t a death sentence for my already-compromised fashion sense?” — Sulking About Silver

Ah, the grin-and-bear-it bridesmaid. We’ve all been there, and some fare worse than others. Consider yourself fortunate: that dress is actually pretty alright! Of course, it’s probably made of uber-flammable taffeta or some shit, so be careful should you find yourself inebriated and in a close proximity to candles, which you undoubtedly will. New App From IKEA Puts Furniture Directly In Your Home

Home Decor On A Budget

IKEA is one of my favorite places in this world. Everything is colorful and beautiful, the prices are good, and HELLO,  Swedish meatballs. However, if you don’t feel quite so strongly about IKEA and would rather avoid a few extra trips to their labyrinthine stores, this new app may be just what you have been waiting for. It’s an augmented reality app that allows you to use your phone to picture IKEA’s furniture in your home. Instead of focusing on the width and length of your purchases, you can get a visual representation of how it will actually look. The furniture appears in 3D over your room so that you can see if the couch is too big or even if the color isn’t quite right. The future is here, people! And yet! We’ve done it. Or we know someone who’s done it, anyway. Drunk shopping is rarely a good idea, but that’s never stopped us from brazenly logging on to UrbanOutfitters.com, our credit card numbers memorized,  with a hankering for crop tops. The Frisky staff divulged their most embarrassing drunk purchases, and polled friends and family on their biggest drunk splurges.
