Less Is More: How To Apply Minimalism To Your Wardrobe

Less Is More: How To Apply Minimalism To Your Wardrobe

The wildly popular website Zen Habits debuted in 2007. Miss Minimalist started blogging in 2009, and The Minimalists followed in 2010.  There’s a subreddit each for minimalism, anti-consumption, and decluttering. There’s also one for tiny houses, and if you happen to downsize to the point that you can fit in 160 square feet or less, you can buy a mobile, pre-made tiny house – or build one yourself.  Suffice it to say, there’s a growing American minimalist culture.

There are a lot of great reasons to go minimal: Donating your extra stuff to charity helps other people. Buying only what you need keeps your expenses low now and in the future. It’s good for the environment — downgrading from a car to a bike or public transit cuts CO2 emissions, and recycling or repurposing your possessions means one vote for less manufacturing. People who are anti-consumption downsize because they question a culture of consumption that values people by what they possess rather than who they are.

As an adult, I’ve spent a lot of time shopping for the latest fashion trends — but I could never truly keep up. More often, I found myself in the maddening cycle of buying cheap, clearance-rack, last-season cast-offs that were never designed for my body type, having them get misshapen from wear or laundering, and going back to the clearance rack for more. This year I finally got fed up. I wanted to stop the madness. To do that, I decided to step back from the endless cycle of fashion trends, and apply minimalism to my wardrobe. Keep reading »

I don’t know about you, but in spring, my purse doubles in size. I instantly need extra space for a cardigan, sunglasses, umbrella, scarf, bottle of water, a picnic blanket, a spare pair of shoes and other necessities for spring adventures. Unlike winter, every outing is a gamble. Will it be colder, warmer, windier, sunnier, or rainier than I suspect? It’s warm enough to flaunt pumps, but I’d rather walk home in flats. Hmm, would it be nice to eat lunch outside on the grass? The safest bet is to pack everything into a badass tote. Here are 10!

Hi/Lo: Vintage-Inspired Totes For Spring

Cute and feminine with a vintage feel? I’m in. Kate Spade’s Vita Riva Francis bag is super cute but a little out of my price range. I’m not gonna spend $398 on a bag to carry sunblock, beach towels, and beers! Mod Cloth’s When In Venice Beach Bag provides the same feel for a fourth of the cost.

City Vs. Suburban Shopping

Most of us at The Frisky are originally country mice — in some cases, suburban mice — who moved to a larger city just as soon as we could. But all of us visit our families often, which means a trip back to the ‘burbs of our youth. And often while visiting family, we need to get out of the house, so we find a reason to hit the mall. Or shopping center. Or the outlets. Or all three. There’s much to love about a city lifestyle (the bars don’t close at 10 p.m., mainly) but we won’t deny that almost getting hit by an SVU in a Target parking lot has a certain charm to it.

Here is our definitive breakdown on the pros and cons of suburban vs. city shopping.

Hi/Lo: Sexy Silver Shorts

Hi/Lo Silver Shorts

When I found these elegant Kate Spade shorts, I couldn’t help but swoon. Imagine sipping champagne on a yacht in these bottoms, as your tan legs stretch out lazily… OK, so that isn’t quite my life, but a girl can dream. However, I will opt to wear the more affordable MinkPink version the next time I do a beer tasting on Manhattan By Sail’s clipper.
