Must Haves: Sexy Sheer Panels

One of my favorite recent trends is the use of sheer insets/panels/sleeves/details to add visual interest and a little sex appeal to every day pieces. Using mesh, organza, chiffon or silk, these little windows expose a glimpse of extra skin, but in a tame, subtle way. Check out 16 cool, fashionable pieces I found with sheer panels…

Awesomely Affordable: 10 Things You Need For Spring From H&M

I’m gonna be honest, aside from certain key times of day, I pretty much refuse to walk inside an H&M. One of two things happen when I do:

  1. I walk in and almost immediately turn around and walk out because I can just tell by the air that staying any longer is going to give me an anxiety attack
  2. I decide to brave it, spend 30 minutes collecting items to try on, realize the line for the dressing room is 10 chicks deep, throw my stuff down in a huff and walk out empty-handed.

But now that H&M has an e-commerce site that delivers in the U.S. we can all avoid that particular hell hole and just order online, venturing inside only if we’re headed straight to the register to return something that doesn’t fit. Unlike some online retailers, H&M has large photos of all their items so you can get a sense of fabric quality and color. And they no doubt have a much better selection than what’s in stores. Here are 10 things — all under $60 — I’m currently coveting for spring!

Style Muse: California Dreamin’

Well, after nearly 13 years in New York City, I’ve started to get a serious itch to move back to my home state of California. Maybe it’s just this exhaustive winter, but I haven’t been able to stop daydreaming about 75 degree February days spent at the beach, transcendent sunsets on the palm-tree specked horizon, and tacos — lots of tacos. Until I find my way back west, I’m looking to add a little Cali-inspiration to my wardrobe. Here are some pieces that are speaking to my SoCal-bred soul.

Compassionate Fashion: Show Me Your MuMu

I came across the brand Show Me Your MuMu on the racks of the boutique where I work on weekends. Every time I’d check the tag of a fabulous new skirt or slouchy tunic, I kept finding the words, “SHOW ME YOUR MUMU” along with a phrase that made me really happy: “MADE IN THE GORGE USA!” A little research informed me that Show Me Your Mumu was formed by two best friends, Cammy and Cologne, who wanted to design flowy, flattering clothes for free-spirited ladies like themselves. And those tags weren’t lying: every MuMu piece is indeed made right in downtown LA. Does this translate to a slightly higher price tag than other brands who churn out their clothes in Chinese factories? Of course. But remember: you’re paying for a quality product that was made by fairly compensated workers. And if that’s not enough, the endless compliments you’ll get on your SMYM clothes will surely justify the extra bucks. Click through to check out 11 of my favorite MuMu pieces!

13 Mature Fashion Icons (And How To Dress Like Them Now)

The other day, we were talking about mature women whose style we couldn’t wait to emulate … once we turned 50. But then it hit us: why wait!? You don’t to be in your golden years to pull off a fashion cape. You don’t need to have flowing, grey locks to wear a colorful head wrap. And you certainly don’t need cataracts to rock a fierce pair of statement sunglasses. Click through to see how to channel some of the amazing style that Anjelica Huston, Stevie Nicks, Dolly Parton, Christie Brinkley, Iris Apfel and other mature fashion icons are serving up daily!

10 Luxe Items You Need That Are Worth The Splurge

Alright, we all know the economy is rough right now, and tough times call for good bargains. Because let’s be real, ain’t nobody got time (or money) for a $250 blouse.

I can’t even remember the last time I paid full price for anything, with the exception of food (bargain food freaks me out a little). I learned it all from my Momma. She taught me that name brands don’t matter—that if it’s cute, it’s cute! I’ll demolish a Forever 21 in 30 minutes and come up on some of the best finds for a price tag my teeny-tiny budget can handle. You know even some of the top-rated designer items just can’t match those $15 finds.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized there are just some items that never go on sale, and when I try going with the cheaper versions, they never turn out as I’d hoped. With that profound knowledge, I’ve decided to lend a hand with this handy list of 10 items worth spending a little extra on. They’re worth every cent! Keep reading »

Must Haves: Secret An Early Spring With Pretty Pastels

This winter has turned me into one of those people who complains about the weather, either aloud or on social media, on a daily basis. Hourly, even, on single digit temperature days. And I’m sick of it. Of the weather, yes (there goes today’s complaint!), but also of being so disgruntled about the weather, because it’s not changing anything. You know what might change things? A positive attitude! That’s what that stupid book The Secret says, right? There’s that old adage, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Well, what if we tried dressing for the weather we want — warm and breezy spring! — instead of the weather we have? Okay, so putting on sandals when it’s snowing is a bit extreme, but wearing pastels — one of the hot trends for spring — is a frostbite-free way to Secret the sun out. Here are 15 pastel pieces you can scoop up now!

Must Haves: 10 Bad Ass Bucket Bags

I really, really don’t need to add another bag to my collection, but an exception may need to be made for a bucket purse. Carrying one, especially in a rich tan or burgundy color, with a crossbody strap, gives such solid Francoise Hardy vibes. Who doesn’t want that?

Must Haves: Sexy Red Dresses For Every Size

Obviously, it’s perfectly fine to wear any color you want on your Valentine’s Day date – pink, yellow, black, blue, whatever! — but sometimes, it’s fun to take your fashion cues a bit more literally. Grab one of these sexy red dresses and watch your date’s jaw drop when you make your entrance…

Must Haves: 14 Small Crossbody Bags To Hold All Your Essential Shit

On the somewhat rare occasion that I emerge from my life as a shut-in and go out to, you know, a bar or a party at night, I do everything in my power to bring as little as possible with me. In an ideal world, I would not carry a purse at all, but pockets on women’s clothes are not usually big enough to comfortably accommodate an iPhone, lipstick, keys and my debit card. Usually I’m stuck carrying a clutch, but that means I spent a not insignificant portion of my evening worrying that I’ll set it down and forget about it. Also, having a purse tucked into my armpit makes it very hard for me to gesture wildly with my arms, and when I go out and socialize, I tend to want to do that a lot. The solution? A small crossbody bag is hands-free and stays on your person, so you don’t risk losing it. Gesture away with these 14 options…
