What From Your Closet Will You Pass Down To Your Daughter?

In the December issue of Elle, cover girl Sarah Jessica Parker talks about becoming a mother (and loving the smell of diapers) and jokes that her two daughters, Marion (called Loretta) and Tabitha, will one day raid her closet: “The only tragedy would be if their feet are bigger than mine.” Having large feet would be unfortunate for the two girls, considering the number of beautiful designer shoes Parker has amassed as a result of playing “Sex and the City“‘s Carrie Bradshaw since the late ‘90s.

My personal shoe collection isn’t much, and I’m not sure future daughters of mine would be thrilled if I saved a battered pair of London Sole ballet flats for them. They would, however, have fun going through my jewelry box and piling on the diverse assortment of bangle bracelets I’ve collected—from fancy to 50-cent—along with tying the million and one scarves I own around their necks. What from your closet will you pass down to your daughters (real or hypothetical)?

Are You A Closeted Uggs Wearer?

leighton meester in uggs

Looks like someone has been dipping into the unflattering trend pool of yore. Leighton Meester was spotted on the set of “Gossip Girl” making a change from what appears to be the high heels of her costume to a pair of Uggs on her break. (Unless Blair has some scene where she’s trying to be ironic? Doubtful.) Seems everyone except for Jessica Simpson has put Uggs on the banned fashions list, and we know a lot of girls who wouldn’t be caught dead in the winter boots (we really would have thought Leighton would be in that group).

But, you gotta admit ... they are super warm and comfy. Like walking on clouds! So come clean—do you still have those pink Uggs circa 2003 in your closet? Break them out from time to time? [Um, yes, yes I do.—Editor] In public? Blair would never!

It’s Jewelry ... For Your Boots!

boot jewelry

Boots are expensive, so why not get the most out of every pair you own and switch up your look instantly with shoe jewelry! Wha? New York City jewelry designers Erica Chan and Tamar Wider have created a collection of footwear accessories called The 2 Bandits. The newest addition to the rather expansive collection is “Riders,” a line of adjustable leather and chain harnesses worn at the base of any boot—flat boot, bootie, shoetie, heeled boot, etc. And 2 Bandits isn’t just limited to chains; they also have beaded and fabric adornments for boots, including the Native American-inspired “Cherokee,” the boho-inspired “Edie,” the “Moondance,” the “Santa Fe”— the list goes on and on. So, yeah, my plain black riding boots can have a second (and third, and fourth) life. Eh, ya gotta kind of love that. [Cool Hunting]

11 Pairs Of Loafers—Pennies Optional

penny loafers

In recent years, penny loafers were most often seen on the feet of businessmen dressed for Casual Friday. These days, they’re being worn by the likes of Kelly Osbourne, Kirsten Dunst, and Alexa Chung. This cute-but-nerdy style was a fashion statement in the 1950s, too. Prep school students started slipping pennies into the diamond-shaped slits on their Weejuns (a name shoe company G.H. Bass coined to play on the word “Norwegians” because the style originated in Norway), and the nickname “penny loafers” was born. Not all 11 of these loafers have room for Abe Lincoln’s face, but they’ll all make skinny jeans, short dresses, or mini-skirts look smart.

10 Wellies We Like And How To Care For Them

The only thing that makes this year’s seemingly endless rain vaguely tolerable is the excuse to buy new shoes. Namely, wellies. No, large plastic shoes aren’t technically the height of style. But when it’s pissing rain and puddles are looking more like pools, we’ll make allowances. Dive—actually, wade—into our roundup of wellies that make us happy. But before you do, here’s how to treat those ladies right once you’ve got them: rub down with soapy water and then dry after use, store them out of the sunlight or heavy heat, and don’t stuff those suckers into a box as they’ll just get dented. OK, let’s get going here.

First up, these are the coolest possible variety of cutesy. [$85, Chooka, Nordstrom]

TOMS Shoes Gets Preppy, Adds Wedges For Spring

Toms Shoes Spring 2010

When TOMS Shoes first came out, I thought they looked weird and wouldn’t put on a pair to save my life (or even to help charitably put shoes on a child, as Toms does with every purchase). But this fall, they released a lace-up version that comes in various wool and canvas fabrics. Finally, a pair of TOMS for me! Thankfully, come spring, Toms will continue offering its lace-up Cordones in warm-weather-friendly canvas stripes and plaids. I’m not sure how I feel about the new striped wedge heels (photo after the jump), but with the right Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday” outfit, I could be sold. Question though: TOMS isn’t giving this style to children in need, right? [Issuu, HuffPo]

Lourdes In Louboutins: At What Age Should Girls Start Wearing Designer?

lourdes ciccone

It was inevitable that Madonna‘s eldest, Lourdes Ciccone Leon, would be a style icon by the time she became a teenager. Well, now we know what’s in the closet of the 13-year-old celebuspawn, thanks to the tell-tale red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes, which tend to retail at about $600 per pair. Here, Lourdes was recently spotted wearing a pair of these must-have studded flats. Of course, the children of celebrities are naturally predisposed to be well-dressed in luxury goods, and they’re some damn lucky kids. But for the rest of the “normal” world, at what age should girls be allowed to wear high-end designer labels? It seems like more and more, there’s a growing culture of teens and pre-teens who are just really, really well-dressed. Honestly, it does make us a little jealous. When we were 13 years old, we would have given anything to live in Cher Horowitz’s closet. How old were you when you started wearing more high-end goods? At what age is it appropriate (if any) for the younger set to start sporting Louboutins, Chanel purses, or whatever happens to be hot these days on Shopbop? [Style Frizz]

Ever Bought Shoes You Couldn’t Walk In?

high heels

I very recently bought a pair of Christian Louboutin heels for $85 at a sample sale—ah-mazing deal, right? Well, turns out, not so much. They’re a size too small and perilously high, way too high for my heel-walking abilities. But, yeah, I still went ahead and bought them even though I could barely walk around the try-on area with them on (let alone a city sidewalk). Still, I love them and because of that adoration, I actually wore them out last weekend. Bad move. I had to go home about an hour after I arrived due to the fact that I was hobbling, painfully hobbling, around. I’m going to get them stretched a half size, but I am certainly not the only person out there who’s bought and never worn a pair of shoes ...

Die, Trend, Die! 10 Popular Fads We Want Killed

10 Popular Fashions We Want Killed

Alexander Wang, do you see what thou hath brought? The designer debuted his denim vest earlier this year and the trickle-down effect has been, well, tragic. But the denim vest is not the only popular fashion trend we want to see take its place in the style graveyard. The hilarious fashion blog BLOGUE got my wheels churning with their suggestions—shorts with leggings, plaid shirts—but I was easily able to think of 10 more ... keep clicking for the remaining fashion trends we want to DIE!

Wanna Design Your Own Shoes?

Shoes

Custom made shoes for women bring orthopedic issues to mind. I obsess over Louboutin and Manolo heels, not specially made footwear. That’s all changing now. For years, bespoke items for men have been well publicized and crave-worthy, but the idea of personalized shoes hasn’t quite made it to the ladies’ realm. Why this is, who knows? Women love shoes more than anything. Finally the bespoke idea is taking hold, and women have the chance to become their own footwear creators. (Hey, if Dina Lohan can do it, anyone can.) But an interesting fact to note is that the term “bespoke” might be switched up for women, leaning towards “footwear couture” to give off a brand new feel.

New Shoes Are Better Than A No-Good Man

New Shoes Are Better Than A No-Good Man

There’s a superstition in Caribbean culture that says you should never buy your boyfriend or girlfriend shoes because he/she will use them to walk right out of your life. The one time I accepted shoes from a boyfriend (he wasn’t Caribbean), I hadn’t asked for them, and I broke up with him about a month later—all of this is more than a coincidence in my mind. So, shoe shopping has always been one of the ways I get over a breakup, because it’s easier to walk away from Mr. Wrong when I’m wearing super hot heels. And when I really think about it, quality shoes are more supportive and uplifting than a no-good man any day.

Would You Wear These High-Heeled Clogs?

Would You Wear These High-Heeled Clogs?

Depending on when you were born, you may remember when clogs, those wooden-soled shoes originally worn by fair-skinned milkmaids in Holland, were resurrected as favorable footwear for the fashion-forward in the ‘70s and then again in the early ‘90s. For those of you who may have missed the earlier waves (or just miss the earlier waves), you’re in luck (?). Clogs are cycling back into fashion, as seen on the catwalk at Chanel and Louis Vuitton, not to mention the feet of everyone’s favorite fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker. This time around, the clogs are high-heeled, making the already-difficult-to-walk-in shoes a virtual death trap on the streets. Usually, when function is sacrificed for style, the pay-off is a hot look. Do you think that’s the case with these clogs? [via Daily Mail]

Review: Sea Of Shoes For Urban Outfitters Holiday Collection

Sea of Shoes shoes in trees

The second round of Jane Aldridge (the teenage Texan behind the blog Sea of Shoes) for Urban Outfitters footwear is out and we’re still, sadly, underwhelmed. The holiday collection is a step up from her last collaboration effort which, if you recall, was painfully unoriginal. This time around, at least, we’d actually be vaguely interested in wearing two of the three pairs and the general level of copycatting has fallen down a few notches. Let’s take a closer look, after the jump!

Will You Buy Designer FitFlops?

Anna Sui FitFlops

My roommate swears by FitFlops, those fugs sneakers/sandals that give you a workout while you walk, claiming she’s seen changes in her calves and rear. But I’m not convinced and would rather spend more time at the gym than wear those curved clunkers. Though I might be persuaded to try them now, as Anna Sui has designed a pair to look like warm, cozy moccasins, which are just in time for winter and conveniently hide the curvature. The boots, named Shakoha, come in three colors—brown, black, and blue—and are made with double-faced shearling, suede, metal studs, and hand stitching. When there are inches of snow on the ground, who doesn’t want to be bundled in perfect snow boots? What’ya think? [FitFlop]

Are High Heels Unhealthy?

pink high heels

“Style-conscious women are worse than smokers,” declares the Sydney Morning Herald. Why? We sacrifice our comfort and health for high heels and continue to buy them like addicts. (Way to stereotype.) The Herald claims that what’s worse is that we don’t even know the half of it: Not only are sexy pumps wreaking havoc on your feet, but they’re also potential culprits for infertility and schizophrenia. That’s right people—your Jimmy Choos (well, in our case, Nine West!) are silent baby killers and mind effers! Explains one expert, the wearing of high heels distorts your pelvic alignment and supposedly messes with your menstrual cycle, in turn having a negative effect on fertility. As for mental side effects, some researchers in Sweden have explained that the alignment of the feet in high heels could possibly manipulate the transmission of dopamine (the chemical that makes you happy): “After heeled shoes are introduced into a population, the first cases of schizophrenia appear and then the increase in prevalence of schizophrenia follows the increase in use of heeled shoes.”

Make you want to run away? Just don’t do it in your five-inch stilettos. [Sydney Morning Herald]
