Finally, something positive happening for the reproductive rights of women in Kansas. Four years after abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was fatally shot by anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder in Wichita, Kansas, his clinic is re-opening.

Activist Julie Burkhart, who worked with Dr. Tiller for seven years, started the nonprofit organization Trust Women Foundation in 2010.  The foundation purchased Tiller’s old office, and after raising nearly $1 million, is ready to open the South Wind Women’s Center.

There will be some changes: unlike under Dr. Tiller, the clinic will not provide late-term abortions.  The Kansas City Star reports that despite the fact that Kansas allows abortions 22 weeks into a pregnancy, the clinic’s cutoff will be 14 weeks.  South Wind Women’s Center will also provide other women’s heath services including fertility counseling and other routine health care, like Pap smears. My college best friend and I coined the term “bipolar week.”  It was used to describe a week filled with both overwhelmingly amazing events and truly terrible moments: winning a prestigious award and then getting dumped by your boyfriend, or perhaps acing a midterm and losing a childhood pet. When reflecting on this past week, in terms of LGBT rights, I could really only describe it as a week “having or relating to two poles or extremities.” The highs: two cases before the Supreme Court to treat gays and lesbians like, you know, actual people.

The low you ask?  Well the low can be found in Kansas. It’s so ridiculous it might as well be a perverse Oz: a bill passed in the State Senate which has language that would quarantine those who are HIV-positive or have AIDS.  I would insert a Judy Garland joke about being a gay icon, but this is really not a laughing matter.  It’s completely f**ked! One surprising way to boost your sex life will have you putting down that “101 Best Sex Tips” guide and whipping out the yoga pants! In a recent article in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, researchers revealed that women who were once unsatisfied with their sex lives but began to practice yoga and “Eastern techniques of mindfulness” reported higher levels of sexual desire, arousal and better orgasms. Now, don’t assume better sex comes simply from learning a couple cool new moves or becoming extra flexible, even though those are definitely pluses. Actually, practitioners believe the most important aspect of yoga that increases sexual appetite and responsiveness is “mindfulness.” Keep reading »

I’ll admit I was skeptical when I heard that the White House was holding a technology challenge for developers to create an app that would help prevent sexual violence. All of the stuff that I believe can change the prevalence of sexual violence — harsher punishments for criminals, a cultural change on what consent means, a modification of the way we use alcohol and drugs — cannot be found in the App Store. But I’m impressed — very impressed — by the contest’s winning app called Circle Of Six. Keep reading »

A long-term study at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland found tha women who had sex four or more times a week were rated as looking 10 years younger than their actual age. (More sex leads to a youthful glow? I can dig that!) But the research, cited in a new study by WomenTALK, also found distressing news: of the 1,031 surveyed, many are increasingly having sex out of obligation to their partner — not their own pleasure.

Are You Into Sexual “Simmering”?

When we talk about our sex lives, it’s usually in terms of how often, where and when we’re doing the actual deed. But some sex therapists contend that getting each other sexually aroused at random moments is just as important to a couple’s bond as lovemaking. Dr. Stephen Snyder blogged about this idea for PsychologyToday.com earlier this month, calling the technique “simmering,” when couples engage in sexually arousing each other — through an embrace, stroking each other’s hair, looking into each other’s eyes, having an intimate conversation — as a way to maintain their intimate bond during a busy day, and as a way to build up sexual interest for when they do find the time to get busy. Why Women Get Friskier As They Near 40

According to a new study, older women — “cougars,” if you must — are total horn dogs and they’ve got their waning fertility to blame (or credit?). Psychologists from the University of Texas at Austin polled almost 900 women about their attitudes towards sex, and learned that women aged 27 to 40 (those past their baby-making peak) have the best sex lives. Not only were they having sex more often than women younger and older, they thought about sex more and were more open to flings. Researchers say these findings suggest that a “woman’s libido picks up as her biological clock speeds up.” Keep reading »

The Average Brit Has Had Indirect Sex With 2.8 Million People. How Do You Stack Up?

I’ve had 7,419,564 sexual partners in my life! And you thought your number was high? OK, so more accurately, that’s how many direct and indirect partners I’ve had. After I read in the Telegraph that the average British person has had indirect sex with 2.8 million people, I was dying to know how many people I’d tangentially banged. So, I went to this website,
Sex Degrees of Sexual Partners,” which has a calculator developed by Lloyds Pharmacy to totally mess with your friggin’ head! Oh, I mean it’s meant to help you understand the risk you’re taking by having unprotected sex. Deep breaths. [Telegraph] Keep reading »

Sesame Seeds And Men’s Sexual Health: The Little Seeds That Might Help Men Spread Theirs

Sesame bagels are my favorite, and if I were a guy, eating them might help me in the sex department. That’s because sesame seeds are rich in the amino acid arginine, which is involved in making nitric oxide, a compound that enhances blood through arteries and even male body parts! More blood flow to certain appendages is a good thing. So, slip your man some sesame seeds (do you think the ones on top of hamburger buns count?) and see what happens — we just hope he doesn’t have a severe allergy like Ryan Phillipe’s character in Antitrust. Please tell me I’m not the only person who has seen this movie. [Parade] Keep reading »
