11-Year-Old To Give Birth To Rapist's Baby In Chile, Where Abortion Is Illegal

A 11-year-old girl in Chile, who was impregnated by her mother’s boyfriend, told a TV interviewer recently that giving birth to a baby would be like “having a doll.” Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, who opposes abortion, has praised the fifth grader publicly for her “depth and maturity” in carrying the pregnancy to term.

Oh, and did I mention that in Chile, abortion is super-duper illegal? Keep reading »

landen gambill

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill is currently facing three investigations by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights over the school’s handling of sexual assault reports.

The issues at UNC first became apparent when rape victim Landen Gambill (pictured here) was found in violation of the school’s honor code and faced the threat of expulsion. (Charges have since been dismissed.) After reporting UNC to the federal government for mishandling sexual assault cases, Gambill was accused of an honor court violation for exhibiting “disruptive or intimidating behavior” towards her alleged rapist, even though she never released his name. UNC eventually dropped the charges, but only after the case received national attention. The school is now under investigation for retaliating against a sexual assault whistleblower, underreporting sexual assault cases, and failing to adjudicate rape at the school.  Keep reading »

liz jones says rihanna invites rape
  • Granted, the UK’s Daily Mail (aka the Daily Fail) is not the place you go to read nuanced, tasteful analysis, but writing that Rihanna “surely invites rape [and] disrespect” by wearing provocative clothes is a new low. Writer Liz Jones also said it’s “fair” to “berate female stars” more than young male ones because “young women are far more impressionable than young men.” No citation for that ‘fact,’ of course! Jones additionally bopped Rihanna for her “fake hair” and “false nails” and for trying to portray herself “as ‘real,’ as ‘street.’” Oh STFU, lady! [Daily Mail UK]

Serena Williams is really not doing a great job recovering from the victim-blaming comments about the Steubenville rape that she made during an interview with Rolling Stone. Her first apology was incredibly lame, mostly because she referred to it as “what I supposedly said,” insinuating that the reporter had misinterpreted her words that were not actually meant for the article.

“What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved – that of the rape victim and of the accused. I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.”

Williams has since come out with a slightly more convincing apology, but seems more annoyed that what she said was published instead of the fact she said it. The tennis star said she reached out to the Steubenville rape victim and her mother and ”we came to a wonderful understanding, and we’re constantly in contact.” Regarding her comments, Williams said: Keep reading »

Ever since my sister introduced the Robin Thick song “Blurred Lines” to me all of four days ago, I’ve been listening to it on repeat for embarrassingly long stretches of my days. It’s catchy, fun, and sexy, and I can already envision my drunken self squealing in excitement when I hear it blasted in some yuppie bar this Friday night. I probably should have picked up the hint that it was somewhat controversial when halfway through watching the music video together, my sister hesitantly said, “Yeah, the lyrics aren’t the best…”

But it wasn’t until I read articles on Buzzfeed and The Daily Beast that I (kind of) grasped the (stretch of a) controversy. I totally understand how practically naked women dancing around clothed men isn’t the most feminist music video in the world. Visually, I get the debate. But critics were even going so far as to say that the lyrics, “I know you want it” were, well, rapey. Really? Keep reading »
