What To Do If You’ve Been Sexually Assaulted

We’ve written a lot about sexual assault on The Frisky this week, from the death threats faced by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s alleged victims and the weatherwoman who filed a false report, to the “Congratulations, you’ve been bad touched!” greeting card on Etsy.com and blogger Andrea Grimes’ incredibly thought-provoking essay, “Who Will Rape Me?” Heavy stuff in the days before Christmas, to be sure.

Yesterday, commenter _JSW_ made a great suggestion that The Frisky get all service journalism-y and provide information on what to do if you’ve been sexually assaulted. I’m more than happy to oblige in the hopes that we can skew our coverage towards more positivity.

I hope our readers and their loved ones will never need this (very basic) information. But given the statistics about rape, attempted rape, sexual assault and incest, it never hurts to be informed. Keep reading »

What makes me most angry about the reprehensible, privilege-denying behavior of Michael Moore, Keith Olbermann and their allies in the whole Julian Assange-can’t-be-a-rapist-because-he’s-a-freedom-fighter ordeal, addressed beautifully by Sady Doyle and a number of brilliant feminists in the form of the #MooreAndMe Twitter hashtag? The fact that, in the likely event I am ever a victim of completed or attempted sexual assault, powerful men (and women!) of liberal privilege may not — indeed, very likely may not — take me seriously. Etsy’s “Congratulations, You Got Bad Touched” Rape Greeting Card

This greeting card belongs on Regretsy, not Etsy: it says “Congratulations, you got bad touched!” and is advertised by the Etsy seller “youstupidbitch” as “Get creeped on, get raped? Know someone that has? Then this card is for them.” It depicts a naked woman sitting next to a shower drain with her hands on her head, possibly in distress. And it’s only $2.50 each! I’m assuming this card was uploaded by the seller and will likely get yanked down by the sensitive, liberal-minded folks over at Etsy as soon as they become aware of it. (But considering the seller also offers a wedding-themed greeting card that says, “Congratulations! She’ll make a great starter wife,” the seller might not just be screwing around.) If you signed onto a feminist or women-focused blog anytime in the past week, you might have asked yourself, “What the hell is going on?” Everyone is at least vaguely aware, I hope, of the Wikileaks cables and international man of mystery Julian Assange (though if not, I’ll explain it briefly after the jump). By why the hell is everyone talking about rape? And what does Michael Moore, of all people, have to do with it? And why did Keith Olbermann deprive the universe of his tweets?!

NYC Weatherwoman Admits Lying About Attempted Sexual Assault

A New York City weatherwoman who has appeared on “Good Morning America” has confessed to lying to police about an attempted sexual assault. This November, Heidi Jones, 37, of WABC-TV reportedly claimed that two months earlier she had been jogging in Central Park when a Hispanic man in his 30s or 40s grabbed her, dragged her to a wooded area, and threatened to sexually assault her. She said her screams attracted the attention of two passers-by, which scared the potential rapist off, and that two NYPD officers refused to take her statement. She also told police that around the time of her report, the same alleged Hispanic man found her outside her apartment and told her, “I know you went to police.” Keep reading »

“Family Matters’” Darius McCrary & 4 More Formerly Famous Actors Accused Of Abuse Or Worse

Former actor Darius McCrary, who played Eddie Winslow on “Family Matters,” was recently served with a restraining order. The legal action was the result of abuse accusations by his ex-wife Karrine Steffans. Steffans claims that McCrary beat her with a belt in front of her son and that this was not the first time he has harmed her. Currently, Darius is not allowed within a 100-feet of his wife, and she is looking to make the restraining order permanent with upcoming court appearances. [Huffington Post]

Today’s Lady News: Bosnian Rape Victims To Complain To UN About Angelina Jolie’s New Movie

  • Women who were raped during the Bosnian war have warned they will complain to the United Nation’s refugee agency about the love story Angelina Jolie is currently filming about victims of the war. Jolie serves as the refugee agency’s goodwill ambassador. The victims are still upset by rumors that Jolie’s flick depicts a woman who falls in love with her rapist.   • Surprise, surprise: Sarah Palin got a bit creative with feminist history in her new book, America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag. Let’s do a little fact-checking, shall we? [The Daily Beast]
  • Anivia Cruz-Dilworth, a model in New Jersey, has been charged with giving unlicensed “butt-boosting” implants to six women, sending them to the hospital. The 28-year-old injected women with silicone sealant, which is used to caulk bath tubs, and covered the injection sites with Krazy Glue. Eeek! [Black Voices]

Today In Terribleness: 14-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide When ID’d After Statutory Rape

A week ago today, 14-year-old Samantha Kelly of Huron Township, Michigan, came home from school and hung herself. Why would a young girl take her own life? Over the past few months, her classmates at Huron High School had been bullying Samantha when they learned her family was pushing a statutory rape charge against an 18-year-old classmate. A police investigation found that the September incident between Samantha and Joseph Tarnopolski had in fact been consensual, but at 14 she was still under the age of consent. Tarnopolski was charged with third degree criminal sexual conduct and in the past several months, Samantha was getting taunted for accusing him. Keep reading »

Google Gal Accuses Twitter Guy Of Sexual Assault — On Her Blog

Remember last month when feminist writer Germaine Greer suggested that women “name and shame” men who commit sexual assault online? Well, that has actually happened: A female Google employee has made waves across the internet for writing on her blog, NerdChic, that she was forcibly groped by a Twitter employee last week at a tech conference. Today’s Lady News: Jury Acquits Rapist Who Climbed In Window With A Knife

  • Good news, ladies! A man who broke through a woman’s kitchen window and raped her at knife point has been acquitted by a jury. Timothy West broke into a stranger’s house at 1:30 a.m. and raped her while her family slept elsewhere in the house. When he was finished, he asked for her number, and she saw an opportunity to help the police catch him so she gave it to him. The victim’s brother called 911 after he left and she can be heard crying in the background. Police secretly recorded their conversation when West called her the next day and said — get this — “I do apologize from the bottom of my heart. … You mad at me? I can’t call you no more?” The victim agreed to meet him at a Dunkin Donuts that night, but when he showed up, police were waiting and arrested him. A jury acquitted this fine human being because they assumed she must have known the victim and invited him over. Let me repeat this: They didn’t believe her. I know all my hookups come in via the kitchen window holding a knife! Timothy West is currently in jail serving out the rest of an unrelated sentence for burglary. And then he’ll be back on the streets. Good job, justice system. [Jezebel]
