The Soapbox: Rape Doesn’t Have To Meet The Legal Standard To Have Happened

I’m on the advice panel for I Believe You, It’s Not Your Fault, a blog where adult victims of sexual assault share their stories in the hope of helping younger girls. I do believe people, automatically, when they tell me they’ve been raped. Why wouldn’t I? When I give advice, I try to focus on what the victims can do to validate themselves, to get some stability back in their lives, to show their bodies respect, to get some perspective on the psychological effects of trauma — just like everyone else on the panel does. We don’t jump to “BURN YOUR RAPIST TO THE GROUND! DESTROY HIM!” The fate of the accused is not the point of the blog; it’s the fate of the victim that matters to us. Keep reading »

The Lifetime Movie About The Steubenville Rape Case Is Very, Well, Lifetime

OOOF
  • If you have literally nothing else in the world to do tomorrow night, Lifetime will be airing “The Assault,” a new made-for-TV movie based on the Steubenville rape case. Although it would appear, to put it mildly, that some facts of the story are massively altered. The movie opens with the victim attempting suicide by lighting herself on fire, and she soon reveals that her mother has just died — neither of which are true of the real-life case. Apparently, a gruesome rape and subsequent cover-up and shunning of the victim isn’t dramatic enough in itself to Lifetime? [Slate]

Frat boys from Tau Kappa Epsilon at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee have been accused of slipping date rape drugs to young women at an off-campus party on Friday night after several female and one male student became so utterly incapacitated that police had to be called.

A UWM residence hall called the police three different times early Saturday morning after students came back to the dorm “unable to stand or walk.” All of the incapacitated students had X’s written on the back of their hands, which they said they got from the TKE party. And here’s where the part of the story gets weird. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Keep reading »

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Accused Of Sexual Assault By Ex-Stripper

Jerry Jones Cowboys 091014

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been accused of sexually assaulting a former stripper named Jana Weckerly, 27, during a 2009 incident in Texas. In a lawsuit, which can be read here, Wecklery said she and another woman met Jones at a hotel in North Texas sometime during May or June 2009. She accused the 71-year-old Cowboys’ owner of forcing his fingers into her vagina, forcibly kissing her on the neck and shoulders, forcing her to rub his penis, forcibly grabbing or rubbing her butt, and making her watch while he got a blowjob from the other woman. All of this occurred without her consent, she alleges. Keep reading »

True Story: Someone I Love Told Me He Thinks Women Lie About Rape

pinnochio 090314 new

I have an ongoing joke with two of my close friends, about a Tumblr we’re going to create called “I’m Disappointed in You.” It will include a variety of things people — most of whom we thought knew better — have done which lowered them in our esteem. Examples will include deliberately racist comments, fat shaming, heterosexism, anti-feminist nonsense … you get the idea. It’s a joke, but it’s based on a feeling I’m sure we’re all familiar with.

A few weeks ago, I was startled by the kind of disappointment that can only come from someone you love and trust. I wish I remember what started this conversation,  but suddenly a man who has done an excellent job of loving me for almost 20 years said to me, “I think that if there are 10 women who say they’ve been raped, eight of them are telling the truth, and two of them are probably lying.” Keep reading »
