The arrest of five players on the Vanderbilt football team this summer regarding an alleged gang rape shocked Nashville and college football fans across the nation. The five young men allegedly sexually assaulted an unconscious 21-year-old female student inside a Nashville campus dorm last June. Now, a new BuzzFeed article sheds more light about the alleged incident. To say the details are troubling is to put it mildly: the victim had been out partying on the night of the incident with one of the guys, who then allegedly took her back to his dorm while she was unconscious, where he and his teammates sexually violated her and filmed it.

- The Montana judge who sentenced a teacher to only 30 days of a 15-year sentence in prison for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl (who later killed herself) has decided his sentence is “illegal” because it is less than the mandatory two-year minimum. Judge Todd Baugh, who said the 14-year-old victim was “in as much control of the situation” as her 49-year-old rapist because children aren’t children when sex is involved now, or something, has called for a new hearing this Friday. Let’s hope that creepy teacher gets a sentence he deserves. [Jezebel] Keep reading »
Yesterday, we told you about a story coming out of Yellowstone County, Montana: A teacher who’d repeatedly raped his 14-year-old student received a 15-year suspended sentence and was ordered to spend just 31 days in prison. Why? Because, ruled Judge G. Todd Baugh, the victim “seemed older than her chronological age.” At the time of the crimes, Stacey Dean Rambold was 49, and an authority figure in the girl’s high school.
According to Judge Baugh, that didn’t matter, though, because the way the girl — whom Baugh had never even met or interviewed — acted was much more mature (i.e. slutty) than what Baugh considers an average 14-year-old to be. Now the judge is coming under fire for not only the insanely light sentence he gave to Rambold, but also for comments he made regarding the sexual and emotional status of the victim. Not only did Judge Baugh say that he believed the victim was much older than her age, he also asserted in his ruling that the victim was “as much in control of the situation” as her rapist.

You know what’s really not the point when we are discussing sexual harassment and sexual assault? How attractive the perpetrator is. And that’s a point that was lost on CNN commenter, criminal defense attorney Darren Kavinoky, who questioned whether San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who is expected to resign today after an 18th woman came forward alleging sexual abuse, is guilty of anything other than being unattractive. LADIES BE SUPERFICIAL, AMIRITE? Keep reading »
Eighteen is the magic number! It took 18 different women to accuse San Diego’s mayor Bob Filner of sexual assault and sexual harassment before his eventual resignation, according to NBC San Diego sources. Keep reading »
It’s over, The Onion: a piece that went up today called “Adolescent Girl Reaching Age Where She Starts Exploring Stepfather’s Body” is a grenade-launch distance past the “too far” line. The humor site failed to make anything funny — like, at all — about a 13-year-old girl named Heather who is being sexually abused by her stepfather, Gary. “It will probably take time for Heather to figure out what does and doesn’t feel good to her stepfather, and she may be surprised to discover acne and hair in unexpected places on Craig’s body,” The Onion joked. “But it’s all part of growing up, and she should know that she is taking a very important step in life. It won’t be long before her childhood is gone forever.” The piece then suggests that if (if?) Heather is “confused or troubled by such experiences,” she should talk to her friends “who are going through the exact same thing.” Keep reading »
- A fifth Vanderbilt football player has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 21-year-old female student in a college dorm this past June.
