Today’s Lady News: Chicago-Area Campus Sex Assaults Rarely Prosecuted

Today's Lady News
  • Campus sexual assaults are rarely prosecuted as felonies at Chicago schools, according to a depressing piece in the Chicago Tribune. Many sexual assaults that police agree are rapes are prosecuted as misdemeanor battery charges, allegedly because they are easier to prosecute. [Chicago Tribune]

  • Vinny Guadagnino from “Jersey Shore” debuted a rap song on YouTube yesterday called “Rack City Mix” with the lyrics “Actin’ like I’m raping it / F**k her till she fakin’ it.” After getting blased by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), Vinny pulled the video. He also tweeted, “Whoa! Some people really know how to take things out of context ! #LearnToListenToMusic …It was fun though!” Perhaps realizing that tweet was even more boneheaded than the initial video, Vinny then tweeted, “Sorry for offensive rap.I’m 100% against violence & work with many organizations to stop it. Will continue to do so.” Sigh. [Huffington Post]

Anne Sinclair and DSK photo

Finally! At long last, Dominique Strauss Kahn‘s wife has finally gotten a clue (or an STD). Anne Sinclair stood by the former International Monetary Fund chief when he was accused in May of sexually assaulting a hotel maid and reached into her deep pockets to pay his lawyer fees. (All criminal charges were dismissed; a civil case is still pending.) Sinclair even stood by DSK last month when he was accused of using a high-class French prostitution ring.

But now a politician close to the French power couple said Anne has had enough and they “are thinking about (divorce or separation), that’s for sure.” The French newspaper Le Figaro even quoted “friends” of Anne who claim she thinks his reputation is getting “pathetic.”

You’re on notice, Sweden. You are supposed to be the land of gender equality, meatballs and easy-to-assemble LACK coffee tables. So what is this about a school principal telling a teenaged student who was raped that “guys do this kind of thing, you have to get used to it?” Keep reading »

Yet Another Reason To Avoid Craigslist Casual Encounters

Let this be word to the wise for those looking for a hookup online: two women were arrested this after an 18-year-old man told police he’d been cut over 300 times during sex play. The dude met one of the women on the Internet through Craigslist and had traveled to Milwaukee from Arizona for a consensual, kinky tryst. But after meeting Rebecca Chandler and Raven Larrabee in person, it quickly got out of hand. Chandler said they were having sexual relations that involved the cutting, though she agreed that it did indeed get out of hand. Uh, yeah, you could say that. Keep reading »

On November 2, feminist activists organized together to protest Facebook’s refusal to remove pages that contained jokes about rape and violence against women from their site. Facebook’s Terms of Service bans language that is “hateful, threatening,” or contains “graphic or gratuitous violence” — which you will quickly find out if you make a “joke” about, say, dragging a black man behind a pickup truck. And if you post pics of yourself breastfeeding or anything just “too sexy,” like Courtney Stodden did, you’re in trouble. But Facebook rationalizes that their Terms of Service doesn’t include “jokes” of hate, threats, or gratuitous violence against women — because those are joke-jokes, right, bro?

The progressive web site Change.org collected 188,000 signatures asking Facebook to ban rape jokes and jokes about violence against women. Throughout the day on November 2, activists tweeted the names of offensive pages like “We’re gonna have sex tonight” “Why?” “Because im stronger than you are” to the @Facebook handle on Twitter.  And finally — finally! — Facebook listened and responded.

Today’s Lady News: It’s Not Rape If She’s Wearing “A Nightie,” Says Politician

Today's Lady News
  • A woman can’t be raped if she’s wearing “a nightie,” silly, because that just means she’s asking for it. So said Dick Black, a Virginia delegate candidate in Tuesday’s election, who gave a 2002 speech in which he said he doesn’t believe spousal rape exists. “I don’t know how on earth you could validly get a conviction in a husband/wife rape when they’re living together, sleeping in the same bed, she’s in a nightie and so forth,” Dick Black said. Maybe he needs to read this post about, oh, spousal rape. You can watch video footage of his speech at the links. Be warned: the victim-blaming stupidity may well make your brain explode. [Daily KosJezebel, Care2
  • Speaking of douchebags, a talk radio host named Howie Carr mocked the woman who was raped and the woman who was sexually abused at Occupy Wall Street, asking, “What did you expect?” Uhh, not to get raped? [Clutch Magazine]
  • More women are going into STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, math), yet they are concentrated in the life sciences, like biology. Why might this be? I know we have a bunch of Frisky readers who studied in STEM fields, so maybe you can illuminate this for us in the comments. [New York Times] Keep reading »

A California woman has been forced to pay her rapist — who happens to be her ex — a monthly living stipend. Say what?

Such is the ruling of a Judge Gregory Pollock.  Crystal Harris successfully convicted her ex-husband Shawn Harris of forced oral copulation and he is now serving time in prison.  But upon his release from jail, she’ll have to pay him $1,000 a month in alimony. Pollack cited Harris’ higher income — 11k a month —as the main reason. But in the state of California, attempted murder (!)  is the only crime that forgives the alimony program. (Harris, sensibly, wants to change that.)

Today’s Lady News: Sexual Abuse Arrest At Occupy Wall Street

Today's Lady News
  • A 26-year-old named Tonye Iketubosin has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse of an 18-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl. The 18-year-old reported said Iketubosin raped her inside a tent at Occupy Wall Street, where he is volunteering at the protest as a kitchen worker, early Sunday morning. That girl had an argument with her tent-mate in the middle of the night on Saturday and Iketubosin offered to let her sleep in his tent. She fell asleep and woke up to him raping her. The 17-year-old said Iketubosin helped her set up her tent on Thursday night and the next morning she found him groping her, until she pushed him away. I certainly am not making this story the lead item in Today’s Lady News to suggest all, or even most, people at Occupy Wall Street are bad guys. But I am including it to make the point that even so-called “liberals” or “progressives” commit sexual violence against women. [Gothamist]

Protest Today Against Facebook’s Rape Jokes

caveman photo

There’s a lot of dodginess on Facebook (status “updates” from your sister’s fetus, hello) but there’s one thing we cannot tacitly approve by ignoring — rape jokes such as:

  • “Kicking Sluts in the Vagina”
  • “Whats 10 inches and gets girls to have sex with me? my knife”
  • “I know a silly little bitch that needs a good slap”
  • “We’re gonna have sex tonight” “Why?” “Because im stronger than you are”

Yes, some immature, insensitive people post rape jokes or create pages with themes about raping, stabbing, or threatening their girlfriends and moms.  That hate speech is bad enough, but alas, you are allowed under the First Amendment to be a douchebag.

The real question is, though, why is Facebook permitting jokes about sexual violence? Keep reading »
