Poll Asks If Lara Logan Is To Blame For Her Sexual Assault In Egypt

A poll on ApprovalPolls.com asks if CBS reporter Lara Logan, who was beaten and sexually assaulted on February 11 while reporting from Tahrir Square in Egypt, is to blame for the attack on her.

Though this poll was probably put up by some random nobody, it’s not at all unheard of that there are people who think Logan is in some way to blame. After all, what was a woman — a blonde! — doing in a dangerous place like Egypt?! PopEater is even reporting that network executives “met to discuss if female journalists belong in the Middle East,” which is hella depressing. (Meanwhile, some commenters discussing the story on sites like Huffington Post explicitly blame CBS.)

I can’t even believe I have to repeat this but it’s worth repeating: the only person to blame for a sexual assault is the person who does the assaulting. Period.

Today’s Lady News: CBS News’ Lara Logan Beaten, Sexually Assaulted In Egypt

  • CBS correspondent Lara Logan was beaten and sexually assaulted in Egypt’s Tahrir Square on February 11 after she, her “60 Minutes” team, and their security were attacked. Logan was reportedly rescued by a group of women and 20 Egyptian soldiers. Logan returned to the United States the next morning and is currently in the hospital recovering. We have her in our thoughts and wish her a full recovery. [CBS News]
  • Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will be tried on charges of sex with a 17-year-old prostitute, a judge ruled yesterday. Thousands of Italians protested across the country on Sunday against Berlusconi’s alleged diddlings, while he maintains the accusations are “groundless.” Apparently he’ll stand trial before three female judges, too!   • Veterans who were sexually assaulted by other servicemembers filed a lawsuit against the U.S. military (specifically U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld) today with accusations it is too lax about pursuing sexual assaults. In a statement, a Pentagon spokesperson acknowledged the military had “work to do.” [BBC]

  • Leave it to Kristen Schaal at “The Daily Show” to give the best assessment of Republicans’ attempts to redefine rape in the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act. “Rape with benefits” and “rape-ish” are sooo becoming part of my vocabulary. Why Are Politicians Attempting To Redefine Rape?

The “No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act” redefines “real” rape as only that which is “forcible” and has been co-sponsored by 173 mostly Republican legislators and was called a “top priority” by Speaker of the House John Boehner. Likely knowing that fully criminalizing abortion is impossible, politicians are going after the funding of abortions in certain cases of rape and incest. Slipped a roofie and raped while you are unconscious? Raped while you are blackout drunk and unable to consent? Sexually assaulted by your uncle at age 19? If you are poor and need governmental funding to help terminate a pregnancy resulting from this horrific acts, there will be no help for you.

Shocking! Rush Limbaugh Insensitive Towards Rape Victims

“[After Saturday's shooting in Arizona, when Sarah Palin and other conservatives were criticized for using at-times violent political rehtoric, a Time magazine reporter] said, well they should have just turned the other cheek and stopped defending themselves, and they would have shut this thing all down. So yeah, just, that’s what they used to tell women who were raped, wasn’t it? Just sit back and enjoy it, put some ice on it, like Clinton said, put some ice on the lip, you asked for it, your dress asked for it, just sit back and enjoy it. Isn’t that how they used to tell raped women to deal with it?”

— Radio host Rush Limbaugh is sensitive as always while talking about the Gabrielle Giffords shooting and subsequent criticisms against politicians like Sarah Palin and shock jocks like him. Seriously, dude, there is never a tasteful occasion to compare oneself to rape victims. Make your point some other way, OK? Why Weather Woman Heidi Jones Lied About Sexual Assault

Why did “Good Morning America” weather woman Heidi Jones lie about an attempted sexual assault in Central Park? Because she wanted the attention.

Jones had claimed she’d been attacked by a man in Central Park while jogging and that bystanders scared him off. Later, she claimed the same man — Hispanic, in his 30s or 40s — showed up outside her apartment building and threatened her by saying, “I know you went to police.” She also claimed the NYPD refused to take her statement when she reported the disturbing events. Presumably, given her public profile, Jones was then given police protection by the NYPD for several weeks; they accompanied her to work, to the movies, and even out walking her dog. But over time, the detectives started to realize her story was not consistent. When confronted, Heidi confessed she “did make this up.” Keep reading »

Why Do Dudes Like Being Woken Up With A BJ?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man likes being woken up to a BJ. It’s like friggin’ Christmas morning, any day of the year. But us ladies? Not so much. Feel free to correct me if you feel otherwise, but there’s something creepy and invasive about the idea of waking up with someone’s mouth or sex organ around our lady bits. In fact, if the Wikileaks/Julian Assange nonsense has taught us anything (and please, I hope it has taught us something), it is that initiating sex with a woman while she is asleep is sexual assault. Obviously, if she is asleep, she cannot consent. But beyond the legal definition of sexual assault, a half-awakened lady may not be so willing to receive a special morning “surprise” of something she otherwise normally likes.
