Conservative Political Action Conference Draws Major Leaders From The Right

On Monday night, Michele Bachmann visited Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show and his house band, The Roots, played a little music like they always do. But then it became clear yesterday that the song was called “Lyin’ Ass Bitch,” a 1985 ditty from the band Fishbone. (The Roots’ drummer Questlove tweeted a teaser that afternoon — “aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title” — that tipped people off.) This morning, Bachmann appeared on Fox News to say NBC owes her an apology and “that had it been Michelle Obama and that song had been played, I have no doubt that NBC would have apologized.” Bachmann squarely named the song selection/title “sexism” (as did feminist bloggers).

And although I can’t believe I am saying this about Michele Bachmann or Fox News, I actually agree. Keep reading »

Religious police in Saudi Arabia may now stop sluts women in public walking around with “tempting” eyes. In other words, Saudi gals with attractive peepers may be forced to cover them up, if a vice officer deems them inappropriate. This is only the most recent “repressive measure” that may be taken against women by the Islamic state. Saudi Arabia’s Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, or CPVPV, is a branch of the government that enforces the restrictive dress codes of the state, particularly those applied to women. In current Saudi law, it is already required that women out in public don a veil. But covering up “tempting” eyes? Mind-blowing. [USA Today]

Over the summer I learned Whitney Cummings, whom I loved from “Chelsea Lately” (a show I watch religiously), would be starring in a sitcom herself and would be producing a second sitcom as well.  I felt excited for her new projects coming up in a way I get about celebs like Jon Hamm and Kate Winslet. It wasn’t entirely because of my feelings for her; I like Whitney Cummings, but I’m really a Chelsea Handler girl. And it wasn’t entirely because of any feminist loyalty I feel for her because she is a successful woman working in comedy. I just thought, Hey, cool, this really funny comedienne is starring in her own sitcom! Now I’ll have something new to watch on TV because, uh, “Two and a Half Men” is not my “thing.” Keep reading »

“A constant 14 percent of the feedback I get is hate mail. But a 100 percent of that 14 percent hate mail is about what what I look like: ‘I hate you not because of what you said, or some argument or some position that you have, but I hate you because you’re Rachel MadCOW, because you look like a cow’ or ‘you’re Rachel, but I’m going to call you him.’ (fake laughs) That’s the funniest joke in the whole world! It’s the same joke every time. … I want new hate mail. I want it to be about something other than me being mannish and cow-like.”

Rachel Maddow and Ellen DeGeneres held a Kickass Lesbian Summit today on “Ellen” and chatted about a new documentary about women in the media, “Miss Representation,” which airs tonight at 9 p.m. on OWN. I am not at all surprised that Rachel Maddow even got “you’re ugly!” hate mail when she was on the local radio. I’m sure 99.9 percent of people probably didn’t even know what she looked like. “Anytime any woman mentioned ‘cream,’ Guy went into a sexual riff. When cutting the show, you had to tell the editors to watch Guy’s eye line, because it’s always on breasts. … Guy had decided that the two men running the restaurant were life partners. He said, ‘You can’t send me to talk to gay people without warning! Those people weird me out!’ … [Guy was] demanding tremendous research from my people, and pictures, but they didn’t want to pay for them. Guy said to me: ‘You know, it’s true: Jews are cheap.’”"

— Producer David Page rips into Guy Fieri, the wackadoodle-haired “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” star, in a cover story exposé in City Pages magazine. Page hired Fieri, a chef, to host the Food Network show, which became a runaway hit. But as his former producer tells it, Fieri ogled women and openly made bigoted comments about gays and Jews. Manly Men Will Only Drink Macho Diet Soda (That’s Dr. Pepper Ten’s Philosophy)

Dr. Pepper Ten photo
Watch Video

You’re probably expecting an avowed feminist like myself to put a diet soda commercial marketed to men with guns, ATVs and snake attacks on blast. It’s true, Dr. Pepper Ten’s new ad declaring “It’s not for women” is dripping with machismo like beads of sweat pour off a gator hunter in the Florida sun. But the commercial is a lot more sexist towards men than it is towards women. Yes, men are victims of sexism, too. Can Madison Avenue really not sell a 10-calorie soft drink to men without sweeping gender generalizations?

Children learn more than just ABCs at their mother’s breast: a new study of 1,455 adolescents and their parents in Spain finds that mothers are the parent most likely to socialize traditional gender roles and therefore pass along sexist beliefs.

Gloria Steinem, rejoice: “The Playboy Club” has been cancelled after only three episodes. Viewership dropped from 5 million to 3.2 million, which spooked NBC enough to give it the axe. While we are sorry the lovely and talented Amber Heard is out of a job, honestly that show sucked.

Saudi King Spares Woman 10 Lashes For Breaking Driving Ban

Saudi Arabia is on a roll with this not-treating-women-too-much-like-2nd-class-citizens thing! Earlier this week King Abudllah announced that women could vote and run in elections. Then on Wednesday, a member of his staff told the AP a Saudi woman will be spared a punishment of 10 lashes for flouting the country’s ban on women driving.  The woman, Shaima Jastaina, was found guilty of driving without a license (as Saudi Arabia only issues such licenses to men) and sentenced to 10 lashes. Geez Louise, hold onto your testicles, boys, because it is like the office of Ms. magazine over there!  Just kidding: the official speaking to the AP declined to elaborate about the amnesty, which may signify the king is trying not to draw attention to it and risking angering Saudis who oppose the expansion of women’s rights. But two grand, pro-women gestures in one week is still something to celebrate. [Al-Jazeera]

Is This Olympus Camera Ad Sexist?

One of the things that comes up in a gender studies class is the concept of the “male gaze.” Generally speaking, it’s the idea that men have a particular and at-times oppressive way of envisioning women (innocent, helpless, submissive, dumb, etc.) which is reflected through the media. The excellent blog Sociological Images hazards a guess that this Olympus camera ad, which appeared in an Australian graphic design magazine, is the very definition of the male gaze. But it’s not the pictures of the attractive women in different colors/tones that are the problem — it’s the caption, which reads “Never get bored of how your girlfriend looks again.” Personally, I think the ad is clever, not especially sexist, although I do understand how it could be read as privileging men to control womens’ appearances. What do Frisky readers think? [Sociological Images] Keep reading »
