“I think all real females are right-wingers and I can tell you that based on experience — and my bodyguard will back me up on this — all pretty girls are right-wingers. Some of my male fans have hair to their derriere and tattoos up and down their arms; some of my antagonists seem like perfectly attractive, preppy young men. Girls — a pretty girl walking toward your table, you know she is a fan. … The reason unattractive — I suppose — the reason liberal women are liberal is because they have to date liberal men and as we’ve seen from Bill Clinton and Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Anthony Weiner, we’ve seen how liberal men treat women. I’d be angry too.  … I’ll take 69 cents on the dollar [referring to the wage gap between men and women] or whatever current feminist myth is about how much we make, just to have to never have to pay for dinner. That seems like a fair deal to me.”

— Oh, Ann Coulter. Your batty comments never disappoint. [The Daily Caller]

“I want to create every opportunity for women to be able to serve this country … but I do have concerns about women in front-line combat. I think that could be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interest of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. It already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat, but I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat. And I think that’s not in the best interests of men, women or the mission.”

Yesterday the Pentagon announced new rules that will open up 14,000 more positions for women in the military that put them closer to combat positions, like missile launcher crew members and tank mechanics. The new rules go into effect this summer. But Sen. Rick Santorum told CNN’s John King he’s not too sure us ladies would be able to handle combat roles because of “other types of emotions” getting in the way, whatever that means. Fear? Having a sadz because of our periods? Does it matter? Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Pregnant Woman Asked To Resign

  • A pregnant woman in Connecticut was asked to resign by her employers instead of taking maternity leave. Amy Zvovushe, 31, told her employers she was pregnant on Sept. 23 and was soon told she would have to resign, as she had not been with the company for 12 months, after which she would be eligible for up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave under the federal Family Medical Leave Act. This is completely ridiculous — instead of giving her temporary and unpaid leave to give birth, they got rid of her. The person interviewed for the piece called it a “sexist irony” that the FMLA was used to fire, not protect, a working woman’s job — well put!  Fortunately, Amy Zvovushe recorded her crappy HR folks and had a lawyer contact them; as a result, she was able to take temporary leave to give birth and then return to her job. [ABC News]
  • Following a conservative “pro-family” group’s threat to boycott JC Penney for sponsoring Ellen DeGeneres’ lezbo-riffic TV program, Howard Stern has announced he will “defend her to the end” and will call on all his listeners to boycott JC Penney if they do drop Ellen.  That’s awesome. Today in News That Makes You Want To Crawl Back Under The Covers: police in Afghanistan say a woman was reportedly strangled to death by her husband because she gave birth to a baby girl. The husband reportedly warned his 22-year-old wife after she gave birth to their first daughter that he’d kill her if she did it again. The husband fled his home last week around the same time a neighbor found the wife’s body in their house; he has not been found, but his mother has been taken into custody for allegedly helping him plot how to kill her. This alleged murder is just another example of the ways women are still horrifically abused and killed in Afghanistan to this day. [CBS News]

Jan Brewer President Obama photo

Maybe I shouldn’t get so worked up about things that I read on other people’s Facebook feeds. But I couldn’t help but feel a lump in my stomach this morning when I saw a former classmate from NYU — from the gender studies program, no less — post the now-infamous picture of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer shoving her finger in President Obama’s face, mouth open as if in mid-lecture, with the comment “President Obama really needs to learn to get angry and slap-a-bitch.” Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: 50 Percent Of Elementary School Teachers Hear Sexist Comments At School

  • Almost 50 percent of elementary school teachers surveyed by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) say they have heard sexist comments in their school. Nearly the same percentage of teachers surveyed said they heard the word “gay” frequently used in a negative way (such as “that’s so gay”). We’re talking about elementary school here, folks. When I heard yesterday that New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie made a blowjob joke while campaigning for Mitt Romney, I thought it just sounded, at worst, crude. (And embarrassing for Romney’s squeaky-clean Mormon image, although that’s another story.)  Christie was rallying for Romney at a campaign stop in Exeter, New Hampshire, when some women started chanting about jobs going down. After a few distracting chants, Christie says, “You know, something may go down tonight but it ain’t going to be jobs, sweetheart.”  Keep reading »

A French town has decided it is sexist to refer to women by their marital status and will no longer be using the word “mademoiselle” — which means unmarried woman — on official documents.

Cesson-Sevigne in Brittany stopped using “mademoiselle” on January 1 and  will henceforth refer to all women as “madame,” which is the term for married women or older women. ”This is about getting rid of anything that could be seen as discriminatory or indiscreet,” the town hall of Cesson-Sevigne said in a statement. ”Having two different terms to distinguish between married and non-married women is discrimination against women as there is no such differentiation for men.”  Keep reading »

Does This Equinox Ad Offend You?

Sexist Ads
Not all advertising campaigns are sexist and offensive. Read More »

I’m on the fence about this ad for Equinox, an upscale gym with locations in Los Angeles, New York City, and elsewhere. On the one hand,  I’m not keen on the juxtaposition within advertisement — that the woman herself is a “joy ride” (despite the fact she is freezing in that outfit) or that riding a motorcycle in a bikini would be a joy ride (again, despite the fact she is freezing in that outfit). It’s another unrealistic portrayal of women’s bodies — not the physical body itself, but the unreal suggestion that she’s so “hot” she’s not losing her tuchus to frostbite.

However, I’m not bothered by the fact a woman in an advertisement for a gym is wearing a bikini, or that her face/identity is obscured by her motorcycle helmet. Even though there are other cases of advertising where a woman’s body is used to gratuitously sell a product — many alcohol ads, for instance — I think a gym advertisement is a pretty legit reason.

What do you think?  Let us know in the comments. Keep reading »
