Police Women Of Broward County’s “Cavity Search” Ad Is An Eye Roll And A Half

TLC’s ad asking “Cavity Search Anyone?” for the show “Police Women Of Broward County” is misogynist, Dylan Stableford, a blogger at The Wrap, has noticed. Really, TLC? Instead of marketing towards women like me who’ll think this show is really cool, you’re going for the porn-y cop angle? Sorry, chuckleheads, but there has not been even one cavity search on the show. Despite TLC’s eyeroll-inducing ad, “Police Women” is one of my favorite shows on TV right now (and the episode about prostitution and johns gave me fodder to write about). Its portrayal of the canny, athletic, highly principled women police officers, some of whom are working moms too, is more educational and thought-provoking than that stupid ad makes it look. See the ad in question, after the jump… [The Wrap] Keep reading »

Quickies!: Emma Watson Flashes “Harry Potter” Fans

  • The wind blew Emma Watson‘s dress at the premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” movie and flashed her nude boy shorts. [Egotastic] — Give her break. The weather was awful and she still looked stunning.
  • Lady Gaga showed off her best outfit yet, a mesh blindfold and mask. [Dlisted] — Maybe she was showing solidarity for burqa-wearing fans in France.
  • Who had the bigger memorial, Michael Jackson or Princess Di?

An Open Letter To The Fools At Bacardi

Dear Bacardi,

I am writing to express my concern about the scary things going on in advertising lately. It seems like each ad gets crazier or more offensive then the next. Did you see the new Tampax ad where a boy wakes up one day with a vagina? WTF. Anyhoo…I know that companies such as yours are getting all desperate to sell stuff (even fruity rum drinks) with the current economic climate, but does that really mean it’s acceptable to come up with a blatantly offensive ad campaign? I need help understanding the thought process behind the worst campaign I think I’ve ever seen, your new Bacardi Breezers campaign entitled “Ugly Girlfriends,” which featured a variety of “Ugly Girlfriends” as the new accessory for women to look hotter this summer. Sexism In Advertising: Axe Thinks A Real Man Is Into Banging Relatives

Oh Axe, will your sexist ads know no bounds? This time around, the male product line is shilling its tire-shaped “Detailer Shower Tool” (that’s the manly name for a loofah, FYI) by implying the user is washing off the perfume scene left by a chick (on his ear) and her mother (on his knees). Because he was doin’ them at the same time, get it?! As Context.org asks, have threesomes become so commonplace that companies like Axe need to take it up a notch by titillating their audience with mother-daughter sex? Keep reading »

No Need To Be Ugly To Save The Planet!

Apparently you can save the whales AND have perky double-D’s. Or so says Belgian biodegradable cosmetics company Biocorner. Their recently published “No need to be ugly to save the planet” ad gloriously frees us from thinking that a unibrow and hairy pits are synonymous with love for the environment. The ad features a “before” and “after” shot — “before” is a pockmarked woman wearing one of the those tragic knit caps, while “after” is a glossy-haired femme-bot in a cocktail dress. The idea seems to be that women who care about the environment are BUSTED, so let’s prove that they don’t have to be that way by…photoshopping them to the point where they look barely human. Yeah, that makes sense. [AdRants, The F Word] Keep reading »

Ad For Skin Whitening Pill Is Simultaneously Racist, Sexist, & Disgusting!

This print ad for Imedeen’s skin whitening pill is so awesomely offensive because A) the very nature of skin whitening products is racist, B) making a blow job joke to sell a product is sexist, and C) suggesting she swallows (especially as I am eating a yogurt) is disgusting! It’s a triple threat! Way to go, Imedeen! [Feministing] Keep reading »
