American Apparel Advertises Shoes With A Foot Up The Butt

The Pippa Buttlift

The "Pippa Middleton buttlift" is all the rage. Read More »

American Apparel‘s print ads for their shoes show one going up a woman’s taut, slightly arching butt, as well as a man’s hands pulling up a woman’s dress from behind while they both wear American Apparel shoes. Of course they advertise like this: sex (still) sells. I’m not offended (I think they’re hot!), but I’m not wowed by the company’s uber-creative marketing prowess, either. Ho hum, it’s just a woman’s butt and a shoe! Show us something we haven’t see from you a million times before, Dov Charney. [Styleite] Keep reading »

A Woman’s Take On The Super Bowl’s “Man’s Last Stand” Dodge Commercial

As we all know, the theme of this year’s Super Bowl commercials (lovingly curated in a slideshow by Amelia) was OH NOES! WOMEN ARE EMASCULATING THE MENFOLK!

Dodge Chargers’ ad about “Man’s Last Stand,” in particular, had a lot of critics rolling their eyes for the way it depicted modern dudes as a sorry, henpecked lot. Producer MacKenzie Fegan has filmed a “response” ad called “Woman’s Last Stand,” and though it’s a wee bit bitter, the sentiment has us fist-pumping like we’re on the freaking Jersey Shore. (Warning: two little curse words make it not safe for work.) [The Sexist] Keep reading »

Folgers Continues Its Reign As Most Sexist Instant Coffee Brand Ever

Folgers has a long history of creating mega sexist commercials advertising their brand of instant coffee. You can watch a ton of the vintage ads online, most of which have to do with a woman doing her wifely duty by having her husband’s coffee ready first thing when he wakes up. Whatever, clearly things have not changed. In this new ad, which started airing around the holidays and has been getting on my nerves, a daughter — who looks to be a full-grown adult, potentially home for the holidays — comes into the kitchen in the morning and her dad comments on how late she came home. Her response is that she’s not 16 anymore and anyhoo, Dad won’t have to worry about that anymore because — hand reaches out — SHE’S ENGAGED!!!! Monitoring her curfew is now in the hands of her future hubby, aww shucks! WTF, really? This commercial wouldn’t have bugged me as much if it had, say, been a mom and a daughter or a dad and a son, but something tells me Folgers didn’t even consider that. Daddies have to watch over their Little Baby Girls until Little Baby Girls meet their husbands and become his problem. GAG. (Also, who drinks instant coffee anymore besides my grandmother?) Not All Advertising Campaigns Are Sexist And Offensive

I must admit, we post about a lot of sexist advertising campaigns here on The Frisky. But there are just so many of them! But here’s one that’s actually kind of empowering and positive, courtesy of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, or “Sucrilhos” in Brazil. The message is clear: it doesn’t matter if you’re “different” — like this adorably awkward little girl competing in a beauty pageant — all that matters is that you’re healthy. (OK, granted sugary cereal isn’t the healthiest, but whatevs.) Check out one more from the campaign, after the jump… [copyranter] Keep reading »

Is This Ad For Jamieson’s Raspberry Ale Sexist?

Snow White has been made over into “Ho White,” smokin’ a fag after, apparently, a rockin’ roll in the hay with her favorite seven dwarves. The ad is for Australian brewery Jamieson’s raspberry ale which is being marketed as “anything but sweet.” The thing is, the company behind it, The Foundry, forgot to ask Disney’s permission to turn one of its fairy tale heroines in to a big ol’ gangbanging slut, and they’ve had to pull the ad. Too bad, because I think it’s more funny than offensive. [AdFreak] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: “Californication” Ad Stars David Duchovny And A Woman’s Butt

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Showtime’s “Californication” is about a horny novelist. But this ad, which just shows David Duchovny flanked by college students’ legs, is still gratuitously objectifying women’s bodies. Good shows can still have sexist ads! [Showtime]
  • Shock #1: Rosalind Miran-Ramirez of California discovered her nipple was bleeding. Shock #2: Her insurance company, Blue Shield of California, sent her an emergency room bill for $2,791 because “an emergency did not exist.” When Miran-Ramirez filed an appeal, her insurance company stood firm, saying they would not cover the cost of her bleeding nipple because she had not shown “any acute distress.” [Think Progress, hat tip to Feministing]
  • A 14-year-old girl in England died after being given a dose of the Cervarix vaccine, which protects against some strains of HPV, which causes cervical cancer. The U.K. began vaccinating 12- and 13-year-old girls in September 2008 and is also giving older teens the vaccine, too. So far, one million girls have safely received Cervarix in the U.K. [BBC]

Police Women Of Broward County’s “Cavity Search” Ad Is An Eye Roll And A Half

TLC’s ad asking “Cavity Search Anyone?” for the show “Police Women Of Broward County” is misogynist, Dylan Stableford, a blogger at The Wrap, has noticed. Really, TLC? Instead of marketing towards women like me who’ll think this show is really cool, you’re going for the porn-y cop angle? Sorry, chuckleheads, but there has not been even one cavity search on the show. Despite TLC’s eyeroll-inducing ad, “Police Women” is one of my favorite shows on TV right now (and the episode about prostitution and johns gave me fodder to write about). Its portrayal of the canny, athletic, highly principled women police officers, some of whom are working moms too, is more educational and thought-provoking than that stupid ad makes it look. See the ad in question, after the jump… [The Wrap] Keep reading »

Quickies!: Emma Watson Flashes “Harry Potter” Fans

    • The wind blew Emma Watson‘s dress at the premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” movie and flashed her nude boy shorts. [Egotastic] — Give her break. The weather was awful and she still looked stunning.
    • Lady Gaga showed off her best outfit yet, a mesh blindfold and mask. [Dlisted] — Maybe she was showing solidarity for burqa-wearing fans in France.
