  • Women directors fare far better in indie films than they do in the mainstream Hollywood machine, according to a new study out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Women are still woefully underrepresented in all filmmaking roles in Sundance films, however. [Guardian UK]

  • Indian caste councils have asked for “greater understanding” for families for committing domestic violence against their sisters and daughters, AKA so-called “honor killings.” Women’s rights advocates in India suspect 10,000 people are murdered by “honor killings” each year, usually women killed by family members. CUNY Accused Of Discriminating Against Pregnant Student

Today's Lady News photo
  • The City University of New York has been cited with a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights for allowing the discrimination against a 27-year-old pregnant student. Stephanie Stewart was told by a teacher that she could not make up homework or tests due to pregnancy-related absences, including labor and delivery. She was told by CUNY that professors are allowed to make their own rules about students making up work — despite the fact the federal law Title IX prohibits sex discrimination, including against pregnant students with medically necessary absences. Like, oh, giving birth! I’ll be curious to watch how this pans out. [National Women's Law Center] Keep reading »

Pat Robertson Basically Tells A Kid His Parents’ Marriage Is Dissolving Because The Mother Is Ugly

pat robertson

“The romance is obviously going out of the marriage. You know, it may be your mom isn’t as sweet as you think she is; she may be kind of hard-nosed.

A woman came to a preacher I know — it’s so funny. She was awful looking. Her hair was all torn up, she was overweight and looked terrible. And she said, ‘Oh, Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink.’ And the preacher looked at her and he said, ‘Madam, if I were married to you, I’d start to drink too.’”

– Priceless relationship tips from televangelist Pat Robertson on “The 700 Club,” trying to help a 17-year-old who is concerned his father is ignoring his mother. I think we should give Robertson his own column on The Frisky, so he can share his unique perspective on love with us all. Amelia, what sort of budget do we have for this? [Queerty]

Discriminating against women because of their weight is a very real problem and it goes all the way to the jury box. A new study at Yale University observed 471 adults in mock court cases for four individuals, of whom they were presented pictures: a skinny man, a skinny woman, an obese man, and an obese women. As reported by Yale, “Male participants rated the obese female defendant guiltier than the lean female defendant, whereas female respondents judged the two female defendants equally regardless of weight.” Skinny male participants were more likely than their heftier brothers to negatively judge an obese female defendant. Yet there was absolutely no difference in how guilty the skinny and obese men were judged. Keep reading »

I’d been planning to let the issue of the Nice Guys of OK Cupid blog on Tumblr slide. [NOTE: The blog has since been taken down.] It is pretty depressing from every perspective. I’d squabbled and grumbled about it on Twitter with a few people, and then thankfully the Christmas break pushed it out of my mind.

If it passed you by, the Tumblr scours the dating/social networking site OK Cupid for profiles of men and then posts their pictures (without permission) alongside selected quotes. The typical entry shows a less than attractive guy with a few quotes from his profile proclaiming himself a ‘nice guy’ who is fed up of being ‘friendzoned’ and then a ‘wrong’ answer from the set profile questionnaires such as “Should women feel an obligation to shave their legs? Yes.” Keep reading »
