pole dancing

As a girl who defined herself as a ballerina from ages three to 21, I’ve had the argument over whether dancing is a sport or art many times over. I don’t care what any guy friend says: it’s both. Hey, you try and make dancing on your toes look effortless!

An article in Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald raises a whole new argument: is pole dancing art or sport? Casula Powerhouse Art Center in New South Wales thinks neither because t chose not to display a photo series of pole dancer Zahra Stardust in its women in sports exhibition, “Onside.” Photographer Belinda Mason was commissioned by the Liverpool art center to take the photos, which included shots of Brooklyn Jackson, a gridiron player, Melissa Combo, a longboard surf champion and Stardust in her pole dancing outfit, among others. prostitution

PotentialProstitutes.com is a hideous new website that posts the photos, locations and phone numbers of women who it deems might be sex workers. Many of the pics appear to be mug shots, which would suggest at least some of the women featured on the site have been arrested in the past for sex work. But if you’re an extra special douchebag, you can submit random people for inclusion on Potential Prostitutes.   Keep reading »

Alleged Zumba Studio Prostitution Ring Was Town’s Sweaty Secret

When you think of Kennebunkport, Maine, images of lobsters, sailing, and even the Bush family retreat come to mind. What you don’t think of is seedy sex scandal – that is, until now. The swank, coastal town is where a prostitution ring was being run out of a local Zumba studio.

A local fitness instructor, Alexis Wright, has been charged with running the illicit business out of her gym and secretly taping the “dates.” Now the entire town is waiting to see whose names pop up on the list of johns as the investigation unfolds. Read more…

Be honest: “For A Good Time, Call …” has made you just a tiny bit curious about what it’s like to work a phone sex line. Is it just pervs who call up and pant into the phone before hanging up?  Are all the women who do it just paying their way through grad school?

We went to Sabrina Morgan, a 28-year-old phone sex operator in San Diego, for the real story. She got involved in phone sex back in 2005 and was kind enough to answer some questions over email. Everything you want to know about dirty talk, stocking fetishes and melon humping, after the jump!

pimp list

Not that I was under any illusions that pimps were good people as a general demographic, but this just makes me want to take a bath after reading it. On Monday, Long Island police raided the home of an alleged pimp named Steve McDaniel and came across a handwritten list called “Rules 2 Da Game of Hoez!!!” Keep reading »

Teen Girls Sue Backpage.com Over Sexual Exploitation

Today's Lady News photo
  • Three teen girls in Washington state are suing sex website Backpage.com for profitting off underage sexual exploitation. One 15-year-old girl and two 13-year-old girls filed a lawsuit on Friday, which claims they were trafficked into sex work and their pimps published scantily clad photos of them on Backpage with little oversight by the site. Stories of sex work are rarely ever told by the people actually doing the work. And the sex work narrative typically portrays those involved in the industry as victims, martyrs or worse — immoral harlots bent on unraveling the very fabric of society. That’s why the Red Umbrella Project (RedUP) aims to give sex workers a voice: their own. Keep reading »

Call Girls Onscreen
Meet the women who've played call girls in film and TV. Read More »

We can all agree that sex trafficking of women and girls is abhorrent and should be illegal. Maybe we won’t agree about whether consensual sex work should be legal. (I personally believe it should be.) But where do you stand on punishing cab drivers who knowingly drive around prostitutes?

On Friday morning, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation that pins a $10,000 fine on a cab driver who is convicted the second time for knowingly transporting prostitutes to their work. Simply transporting a prostitute or a decoy prostitute would not be illegal, the mayor said, but knowingly driving around sex workers even after getting caught doing so once before would now constitute participating in a ‘sex trafficking operation.’ Keep reading »

The Escort Files: Women Who’ve Played Call Girls & Escorts In Film And TV

Julia Stiles is back on the small screen, only instead of your TV screen, I’m talking about your computer — the actress is staring in a new show called “Blue” on the YouTube channel Wigs. Wigs has enlisted a bunch of fantastic actors to star in their series, which involve multiple mini-episodes that are all usually under 10 minutes. In “Blue,” Stiles plays a single mom who starts working nights as an escort in order to pay the bills, but is shocked to find out one of her first clients is a friend from childhood. Whoops! You can watch episodes 1-5now. [WIGS]

But before that, let’s look back on the other fabulously talented actresses who have played escorts or call girls — i.e. sex workers who play house calls — on film or TV.

Are you a Joan? A Peggy? Or maybe you're a Trudy. Read More »

Sunday night’s episode of “Mad Men” was a climactic one, and possibly the best episode of the season. Peggy, fed up with being taken for granted by Don, landed a new job at a rival firm and resigned by Sterling Cooper Draper Price. Meanwhile, SCDP’s deal with Jaguar seemingly hinges on Joan sleeping with an exec from the car manufacturer. That Pete dared to bring this proposal to Joan was loathsome. The other partners’ (save Don’s) begrudging support of pimping out one of their most loyal and hardworking employees was disgusting. Even Don’s plea to Joan that sleeping with the exec “wouldn’t be worth it” (which came, unbeknownst to him, just a little too late) was not without room for criticism — his primary motivation was likely his ego’s desire to land the deal on his own merit.

But what of Joan’s decision to sleep with the Jaguar exec in exchange for partnership in SCDP (with a five percent stake)? We got a glimpse at Joan’s current home life as a single mom (her husband, Greg, having filed for divorce last episode), living with her judgmental mother, and it was clear that it’s not an easy, comfortable one. Was Joan’s decision to use her sexuality in the most blatant of ways to get ahead (exchanging sex for money) ultimately a feminist decision? Or was the fact that she was clearly conflicted — and certainly not “enjoying it” — a sign that she was clearly disempowered, whether she came out better financially or not? Jessica and I both had really strong opinions on the subject, so we decided to talk it out over IM. Read our convo after the jump and then share your views in the comments! Keep reading »
