Nigerian Women March To Urge Government To Act On 230 Kidnapped Schoolgirls

todays lady news
  • Nearly 500 women marched through Abuja, Nigeria, to press the government to the seek the release of 230 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram, a group of Islamic militants, two weeks ago. Boko Haram, which doesn’t believe in educating women, kidnapped the students from their boarding school in the middle of the night; four students were able to escape. Today, the protesters marched to deliver a letter to the government urging them to do anything necessary to secure the girls’ release. Relatives are claiming the girls, who are teens, have been sold as “brides” — i.e. sex slaves — to members of Boko Haram for $12. [BBC, Washington Post]

Today's Lady News photo
  • Argentina has allowed a woman who was forced into sex slavery to have an abortion. The 32-year-old woman had been kidnapped and forced into a prostitution ring, which got her impregnated. A judge had initially refused to allow her an abortion because he said there was no proof she had been raped. (In the predominantly Catholic country, abortion is illegal except in cases of rape or to save a woman’s life.) The abortion was finally done today after the ruling was overturned. [BBC]

Today in India is a celebration called Akshaya Tritiya, a Hindu and Jain holy day which is marked by mass marriages. But human rights supporters in India, such as UNICEF, are using the day to draw attention to a less jubilant topic: child brides. Child marriage is officially illegal in India, but that hasn’t stopped too many families from marrying off their young daughters ages 5 to 12 to older “grooms” — which is another way of saying sex slavery. Today, the Wall Street Journal points out one of the more controversial of the anti-child marriage campaigns, called The Girl Store, a website set up to look like an online retailer that advertises “100 percent genuine girls. Young. Innocent. And available. Experience the sensation of buying a girl.” Keep reading »

Must Watch: “Kony 2012″ And The Plight Of Uganda’s Child Soldiers

Watch Video

Joseph Kony is the leader of the Ugandan guerilla group the Lord’s Resistance Army. Kony has been waging war in Uganda for nearly 30 years — fighting a violent and brutal campaign to establish a theocratic government in Uganda. The worst part? He regularly abducts and recruits children into his army, often forcing boys to kill and maim their own families and forcing girls into sexual servitude. Since its inception in 1988, it’s estimated that more than 66,000 children have been forcibly abducted and required to fight for the LRA and more than 2 million people have been internally displaced in the conflict.  Keep reading »
