Robot Hugs Breaks Down Our Cruddy Attitudes Toward Sex Workers

GOD I love Robot Hugs. Robot Hugs is the webcomic behind that amazing analysis of street harassment as a male attitude of ownership over public spaces and everything that exists in public spaces. One of their new strips addresses, well, strippers — or, more specifically, why men have ugly attitudes toward sex workers to whom they are patrons. Keep reading »

13 Questions About This Century-Old Brothel Menu

This brothel menu from the early 1900s has been circulating around the internet for some time now, but this is the first I’ve seen of it, so allow me to ask some vital questions. I’ve calculated the value of the services based on this inflation calculator and American dollars. Ahem… Keep reading »

PurrVerse: We All Have The Right To A Secret Identity

PurrVerse: We All Have The Right To A Secret Identity

It was two and a half years ago that I presented at South By Southwest  on sex workers and social media, particularly on the dangers of “real name policies.” Sex workers are using social media, not only to talk to fans, but to talk to each other, to create community while still maintaining a level of personal privacy that feels good for them.

I argued that demanding people use their legal names (erroneously called their “real” name) can make social media an incredibly unsafe place, with more abuse rather than less. I talked about some of the cons to social media, like the overzealous censorship of nudity while ignoring violent gore, or how bullying and harassment goes ignored.

It was a generally well-received presentation, and I noticed that times did change. Google Plus, who was the main offender, changed their policies first to allow nicknames, and then finally in July of this year, doing away with “real name” policies altogether. I figured the NymWars were over with that. Keep reading »

Zurich’s “Sex Boxes” Are A Success!

sex boxes zurich

Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary of Zurich, Switzerland’s “sex boxes,” drive-in brothels that accommodate over a dozen sex workers. Sex work has been legal in Switzerland since the 1940s, but was largely unregulated. Previously Zurich sex workers sold themselves on the street in several neighborhoods, often climbing into clients’ cars. As can be the case even in liberal Europe, some neighbors complained about their presence. Thus, the “sex boxes” are located in an industrial area farther out from the main area of the city and customers drive to them. Keep reading »

PurrVerse: Adult Sex Workers Are Arrested When We “Think Of The Children”

my redbook

I woke up one morning last week to my Twitter in an uproar. That’s reasonably common in my world, as many of the people I follow are marginalized and there’s a lot to be angry about. Turns out that the FBI has seized MyRedbook, a California site where masseuses and escorts could advertise for clients for free, and arrested two people, Eric Omuro and Annmarie Lanoce,  in connection to “using the mail and the Internet to facilitate prostitution” as well as money laundering under several aliases.

As of right now it’s not entirely clear if those arrests were the main focus of the sting, or if there will be more upcoming. It’s terrifying to many people close to me, who used MyRedbook to advertise their erotic entertainment services because other options like Eros were too expensive or less trafficked by paying customers. We don’t really know what options sex workers who had profiles up on MyRedbook have to protect themselves from investigation. I’m among them, as I used to advertise on MyRedbook as a professional dominatrix. Keep reading »
