Kids these days! They just aren’t getting pregnant like they used to. The birth rate for young women ages 15 to 19 fell to its lowest ever recorded in 2010, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States with the lowest teen birth rates are in the Northeast with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire, while the highest are concentrated in the South/Southwest: Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

It might seem like great news that teen births have been declining over two decades. But the United States still has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the industrialized world. It’s no surprise that the states “16 & Pregnant” casting agents drool over have the strictest abortion laws and also think abstinence-only sex ed actually works. [NY TimesNY Times (2)]

Today’s Lady News: Utah Governor Vetoes Abstinence Sex Ed Bill

  • Utah’s governor Gary Herbert, a Republican, vetoed a bill that would have forced all sexual education classes to only teach abstinence, with no mention of contraception, as well as be “opt-in” instead of “opt-out.” The Utah bill would also have forbidden any discussion of homosexuality. Anyone else scared that this bill passed Utah’s state House and Senate in the first place? [Think Progress]
  • Tennessee’s House Health and Human Resources Committee will take up a bill this week that would require the names of abortion providers, as well as demographic information about women who have abortions, to be listed online. Anti-abortion activists are using the “it’s more information!” smokescreen, while pro-choice activists say this is just another way of trying to intimidate doctors and women. [Feminist.org]
  • Why did a profile of feminist activist Gloria Steinem run in the “Fashion & Style” section of The New York Times? I mean, really, people!  [NY Times]
  • And let’s discuss: do we really need another Gloria Steinem, anyway? [Bitch Magazine]

Most think of us see unplanned pregnancy rates as a serious thing, but others think it’s a laughing matter. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has ab unorthodox approach to teaching guys sex education: humor. While women ages 18 to 29 receive a lot of messages regarding safer sex practices, the organization believes men in the same group remain widely ignored. Their solution? Create PSAs that appeal to men by making them laugh.

Switzerland’s Sex Ed Involves A Wooden Penis And A Fabric Vagina

In America, sex education is whatever the religious right says it is. But in Switzerland kids ages four to 10 get their sex education with a wooden penis and a fabric vagina which teachers use to “show that contacting body parts can be pleasurable.” Another part of the teacher’s guide instructs kids to learn about pleasure while they rub themselves with warm sand bags while listening to soft music. Today’s Lady News: NYC Public Schools To Require Students Take Sex Ed

  • Beginning this year, New York City’s public middle school and high school students will be required to take sex education classes. Classes include directions on how to use a condom and discussions about STDs and pregnancy. Wait, what, this didn’t already exist? Apparently not. The New York Times reports this is the first time in almost 20 years students are required to take sex ed in this level of detail. [New York Times]
  • The New York Times Magazine has a piece coming up this weekend about “pregnancy reduction,” which is when someone who is pregnant with twins or other multiples aborts some of the fetuses so that they only give birth to one child. [New York Times Magazine]
  • Women only hold one-quarter of jobs in science, technology, engineering and math, which is the same level they did in 2000. [Think Progress]

Today’s Lady News: UK Politicians Support Girls-Only Abstinence Education

  • Politicians in the UK advanced a bill that would require British girls — yes, only the girls — to receive additional sex education that emphasizes the benefits of abstinence. This sex ed “program,” if you could even call it that, is aimed at girls ages 13 to 16. It narrowly passed, but fortunately it’s not expected to be made into law. Um, will someone tell the Brits that abstinence-only education is not working out too well for us? Do they have “16 & Pregnant” on MTV over there? [Guardian UK]
  • North Carolina’s House judiciary committee debated a bill yesterday that would further restrict reproductive rights in the state by requiring women to wait 24 hours before having an abortion and requiring doctors to describe an ultrasound of the fetus to the woman. [ABC News]
  • Legislation that would make it more difficult for young women to obtain abortions without their parents knowledge is headed to Florida’s Governor Rick Scott, who is expected to sign it. [Palm Beach Post]
