“Sex and the City 2” shook me free of my Carrie/Samantha/Miranda/Charlotte addiction. These days, I can’t even watch reruns of the show without getting flashbacks to that awful Abu Dhabi market scene. And yet, I’m kind of interested in the prospect of a TV show based on The Carrie Diaries, Candace Bushnell’s prequel to the show. Apparently, The CW is interested in optioning the property, and are gunning for Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage—the dream team behind “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl“—to produce it.
This actually makes a whole lot of sense. The CW specializes in excellent trashtastic high school series. Not to mention that this one would different from “Gossip Girl” since Carrie grew up in suburban Connecticut. And hello, Carrie went to school in the ’80s, so I am picturing lots of neon and lace gloves. Keep reading »
So, the Next Media Animation company in Taiwan is known for making low budget, quick-turnaround animations of current events for Taiwanese news shows. They just put together a new video about the planned “Sex and the City” prequel, which is supposedly going to star Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Emma Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen. Out with the old walker-using Samantha, and in with the new, younger, self-involved versions of themselves! [YouTube

The trailer for “I Don’t Know How She Does It” begins with a voiceover of Sarah Jessica Parker waxing philosophic about why parents don’t get enough sleep. A few seconds later, she’s at a party with three friends, standing next to a redhead (Christina Hendricks) and across from a brunette and a blonde (Busy Phillips). Later, she walks down a very familiar brownstone-lined street. Add in some lingering shots of Manhattan, and a teaser of her at dinner with a swashbuckling ladies man. In other words, it seems like an alternate universe “Sex and the City” where Carrie got marred earlier and had two kids. What do you think—will you be going to see this one? “Summer In The City” is not just a hit song in the ’60s by Lovin’ Spoonful. It’s also author Candace Bushnell‘s second “prequel” young adult novel about Carrie Bradshaw, a.k.a. the way she keeps making mucho clams off “Sex and the City.” (Not that I blame her!) Summer In The City picks up where The Carrie Diaries left off: it’s the ’80s, 17-year-old Carrie Bradshaw has come to New York City to take writing classes the summer before college, and she gets mugged as soon as steps out of Port Authority. (If she was coming from Connecticut, she would have stepped out of Grand Central Station, but whatever.) Carrie calls the one phone number she has on her — her best friend’s cousin — and meets Samantha Jones, her first friend in New York. Later in the book, Carrie meets Miranda Hobbes “in front of Saks, where Miranda is protesting pornography,” according to USA Today. Hey, if we have to revisit the ’80s sex wars about feminism and pornography, better do it with Candace Bushnell than Andrea Dworkin, right? Charlotte York does not seem to make an appearance in Summer In The City — but maybe that will be for a possible third prequel.
Hey, let’s get real: I’m totally going to buy this book and read it in one night while eating a pint of Cherry Garcia. [USA Today] Keep reading »
