Kevin Clash and Elmo

Noooo! I just watched the documentary “Being Elmo” last month and was obsessed with what an inspiring person Kevin Clash, the man behind “Sesame’s Street”‘s most adorable Muppet, seemed to be. Consider my faith in life dashed if this story turns out to be true.

A young man, now 23 years old, has come forward saying that he had a seven-year relationship with Clash, starting at the age of 16. While Clash admits to the relationship, he denies that it was of a sexual nature until the boy was of age. Keep reading »

  • “Sesame Street” issued a cease-and-desist letter to put the kibosh on Sexy Big Bird’s unauthorized costumes. The letter was directed to Yandy.com, a Halloween costume web site whose multitudes of “sexy” get-ups will have you gagging. The Sesame Street Workshop is not buying that Yandy’s “Exclusive Yellow Dress With Stockings” is not just a straight-up Big Bird knockoff.  [The FW]

10 Memories I Have Of “Sesame Street”

I grew up with parents who were not particularly pro-television. My dad even attached a scarf to the top of our TV and would insist on pulling it down to cover the screen during commercials (he also muted the sound). But one show they were always in favor of me watching was “Sesame Street.” I grew up with Big Bird, Telly, Grover, Oscar, the Count, and all of their human friends and have many amazing memories to show for it. I also believe the show helped instill a love of learning, a sense of compassion, and a genuine curiosity about the world around me. Given that the show has been referenced in the same breath as cutting funding for PBS by Mitt Romney — just to be clear, the show actually receives a very small portion of its funding from PBS, and PBS only takes up .014 percent of the federal budget — I thought it would be a good time to review the show’s significance. Because if anything, these empty threats to “kill Big Bird” should serve as a reminder of why “Sesame Street” is so important.

RIP Jerry Nelson, “Muppet Show,” “Sesame Street,” “Fraggle Rock” Veteran

You might not recognize Jerry Nelson‘s name, but you’re probably more familiar with “Sesame Street”’s the Count, Amazing Mumford and Snuffalupagus, or Statler (half of the heckling duo of Statler and Waldorf), Floyd Pepper (the mustachioed guitar player in the Muppet Show house band), Lew Zealand (that guy who chucks fish), Gobo Fraggle, Robin the Frog, or maybe even Emmet Otter. Though he may never have had roles as iconic to the Muppets as some of his colleagues, his long, long history with the group touches almost everything they’ve ever done. He passed away yesterday after a long period of declining health, at the age of seventy-eight.

And that’s certainly a good enough reason to collect a few videos of his characters and share them. Read more…

Jon Hamm looks like he’s gotten into a lick of trouble on “Sesame Street” but I’m sure it’s nothing his little red pal Elmo can’t fix!

Don Draper isn’t the only fabulous celeb headed to the Street this season. Other guest stars include Kristen Bell, Steve Carell, Halle Berry, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Common and … wait for it … Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Time to find some rugrats to watch this season with, stat. [USA Today]
