The September issue is a huge deal for fashion publications, so much so that an eponymous documentary chronicled its creation at Vogue headquarters. The total count of advertisement pages is indicative of the success of each title in the past year, and foretells what may come in the next. We’ve yet to even enter August and the numbers are already out: naturally, the upcoming Gaga-covered edition of Vogue comes out on top with a total of 658 ad pages, which marks both a 13 percent increase from last year and the magazine’s heftiest issue since 2008. At 400 ad pages, Elle will make publishing history with the highest total page count ever to be released by Hearst. The comparatively smaller Condé Nast-owned Allure clocks in with 131 ad pages, which makes it, as with Vogue, the largest issue since 2008. Keep reading »

Get Ready For The New “September Issue”

Vogue isn’t the only magazine that’s ready to let the video cameras into their offices it seems. Apparently W had a bit of “September Issue” jealousy and, in turn, decided to create their own documentary marking the first September issue under brand-new editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi. Given the circumstances — monumental issue, major re-design, and new staff — the film is sure to be full of drama. We’re hoping for the juicy details about what it’s really like to work under a new regime while producing the largest issue of the year. Even though the official focus of the documentary is the creation of the latest issue, if this film is anything like “The September Issue,” we’re counting on the fact that a major personality will steal the show, just like Grace Coddington. So far the release date is set for late October, just in time to peruse the glossy and then prep for all the behind-the-scenes secrets. [NYMag.com] Keep reading »

Seventeen Mag Goes Retro For September Issue

Of all the high-fashion, high-concept, high-flying September magazine covers out there, this is our fave. Behold the first-ever cover of Seventeen magazine, from September 1944, which will also be the subscription cover of their upcoming September issue for 2009 in honor of their 65th anniversary. We love that the cover model hasn’t changed: a young, pretty, all-American girl. But everything else has! Notice the single cover line? The first edition keeps it simple with “Young fashions & beauty, movies & music, ideas & people,” instead of the standard shtick you see on teen fashion magazines today. (“284 ways to change your look” — anyone?) The magazine was pretty cheap too, only $0.13. Today, it’s $2.99. [Chic Report] Keep reading »

Charlize Theron Graces September Vogue Cover With Her Perfect Self

Ah, Charlize. I shake my fist at you. Always so perfect, dammit! Presumably to promote her upcoming movie, “The Road,” in which she plays a suicidal mother, Theron graces the cover of the September 2009 issue of Vogue and gasps: “I always reveal too much.” I’m sure that line is intended to pull in the guy readers along with the ladies, no? Meanwhile, Fashion Copious has the down and dirty deets on how the Fashion Magazine of Our Times is faring during the financial downturn, judging by its infamous September issue, and it ain’t pretty. Total pages and ad pages are down by around 300 pages each since 2007. Well, at least it won’t be so hard to lug the darn thing home on the subway. [Charlize Theron] Keep reading »

Quick Video: “The September Issue” Preview!

At last, the masses can finally get a glimpse into the gilded ivory tower that is Vogue via “The September Issue.” The documentary, which was put together by Harvard graduate R.J. Cutler, follows the editrix-in-chief Anna Wintour and her staff in the making of the legendary September 2007 issue. At five pounds and nearly one thousand pages, the issue was the largest one to date. We get a chance to follow Wintour as she is whisked from private staff meetings to crowded runway shows during Fashion Week. The movie debuts exclusively in New York City later this month, and nationally on September 11th. [Racked] Keep reading »
