Is The Selfie App The Answer To Social Media’s Human Connection Problem?

Selfie

Selfie, an app that launched a few weeks ago, wraps up the tried-and-true methods of Vine, Instagram and Tumblr all in one. That may sound exhausting, but the experience encourages organic connection between strangers in a way that is oddly refreshing. Users record up to 24-second videos of themselves, and other users who follow them are able to reply with their own Selfie videos for a pseudo face-to-face chat. Other users can view those conversations on their feed and contribute as well, which makes for new connections and new friends — it’s like a message board come to life, and just like those types of forums, it can be used to discuss any topic under the sun. My limited experience with it so far has taught me that it’s something like a cross between a chat room and brunch with friends. Users can ask for advice, share expertise, tell stories, or strike up conversations with potential new friends — which often prompts people to eventually meet up in person. Keep reading »

NASA #GlobalSelfie

NASA has come up with a thoroughly modern way to celebrate Earth Day this year, and it’s waaaaayyy easier than planting a tree or taking the bus. The most cutting edge scientific agency in the world wants you to take a selfie. Yes, seriously. The project is called #GlobalSelfie, and here’s the lowdown from NASA’s website:

NASA astronauts brought home the first ever images of the whole planet from space. Now NASA satellites capture new images of Earth every second. For Earth Day we are trying to create an image of Earth from the ground up while also fostering a collection of portraits of the people of Earth. Once those pictures stream around the world on Earth Day, the individual pictures tagged #GlobalSelfie will be used to create a mosaic image of Earth — a new “Blue Marble” built bit by bit with your photos. Woman Posted Bloodied "Selfie" On Facebook After Domestic Violence Attack

On Monday, December 30th, Facebook friends of Kentucky resident Susann Stacy would have seen a post of her bloodied face and the message “Help please anyone.”

Susann had been beaten over the head with a handgun by her husband, Donnie Stacy. At some point, the landline phone allegedly got ripped out of the wall. So Susann took a picture of herself (presumably with her computer) and posted it on Facebook through their Wifi network. Donnie was arrested and charged with assault; the handgun he used to beat her was found near their son’s play area. Keep reading »
