Just like periods, female masturbation is one of those topics that are met with beet-red blushing, awkward silence or a fit of giggles. But the reality is that loving yourself really isn’t all that taboo. And this new, eye-opening infographic from Jimmy Jane proves it: More women are getting touchy-feely, lovey-dovey with themselves than you probably realize. Read more on YourTango…

Funny Girl Sex Guide: Debunking Some Female Masturbation Myths
Am I Touching Myself?

I remember when I first came out as a masturbator. It was freshman year of college and my hallmates and I were playing Never Have I Ever. The topic of masturbation came up and I totally lied and said I didn’t do it. One of the other girls in the room looked at me and was basically like, “Girl please, yes you do. And so do I. I masturbated this morning.” And the funny thing was, I had too. I suddenly realized that I didn’t need to hide it anymore. Fast forward 15+ years and here I am, talking about touching myself on the internet. HOW FAR I HAVE COME! So yeah, everyone masturbates, women included. But here are some things men get wrong about female masturbation.

The other day, I was strolling around my neighborhood when I came upon the guy who sells, amongst other things, used books at a table set up on the sidewalk. I see him all the time and he’s always got a truly random hodgepodge of books — tattered copies of various chick lit classics, old cookbooks, and Oprah book club picks. This time, though, there was a familiar cover that caught my eye. Woman’s Body: An Owner’s Manual is a health and body book that my parents gave me when I was on the cusp of puberty. I remember it well, not because I read it from cover to cover at any point, but because there were a few choice sections that had a profound impact on my burgeoning sexuality. Basically, this was the book that taught me how to masturbate and provided me with the initial information I needed (i.e. how people have sex) to construct a hot (enough) fantasy to think about while humping a pillow on my bunk bed. An Empowered Woman's Guide To Eating Lunch Alone

Ami and I have both experienced our share of tragically lonely lunches. In 5th grade, Ami had to sit alone at lunch because she was the new kid in school and had no friends; in high school, Winona often ate her PB&J in the chemistry room to escape the stress of the mean, crowded hallways. These were dark days indeed, but when we grew up and learned to love our alone time, we reclaimed the solo lunch and reinvented it as a positive and empowering experience. Nowadays, we both actually prefer to eat alone. Yes, really. It gives us a chance to regroup and steel ourselves to face the second half of our workday. To help other women conquer their fears of eating lunch alone, we compiled a list of dos and don’ts that will help turn your solo lunch from soul-crushing to life-enhancing (and, obviously, we illustrated them in GIFs). Give Yourself An Inside Out Self-Love Makeover

I often find myself writing about self-love, simply because I know that that is the key to accomplishing absolutely anything we want in life. Self-love breeds confidence, and once we’re confident, the sky’s the limit! I think that we tend to overcomplicate things, or get “stuck in the muck” of what happened in the past. Keep reading »

Sound Off: Ladies Tell Us About Their Self-Love Lives

Ahh, that little man in the boat. How glad I was to meet you! And I wasn’t alone. While men joking about jerking off, spanking the money, choking the chicken, whatever is par for the course in most locker rooms, women discussing their masturbation habits is far less…known or encouraged. But not any longer! I asked a ton of women for the nitty-gritty on their self-love lives. All the details, after the jump… Keep reading »

Happy National Masturbation Month!

May is National Masturbation Month. In the mid-’90s, when U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jocelyn Elders recommended masturbation be taught as a form of safe sex, she was fired. To protest, Good Vibrations, a San Francisco based sex toy company run by Dr. Carol Queen, started the annual celebration of self-love. This year, the company will host its 11th Live Masturbation-A-Thon, a benefit to raise privates and private funds for community-based sex education and health organizations. So far, the event has set a world record — Norine Dworkin got off for over 6 hours. Impressive! [AC via Nerve] Keep reading »
