The cast of “Scream 4” makes us want to squeal—the flick stars Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Kristen Bell, and Anna Paquin, plus has Neve Campbell reviving her role as Sidney Prescott while Courteney Cox is returning as tabloid reporter Gale Weathers. We’ve got a while to wait until it opens in theaters—until April—but the first image of the film has been released. I find it pretty interesting that even though the flick stars all these so-hot-right-now stars, they decided to go with Courteney being chased by the masked murderer for the first pic. Normally, sequels aren’t my thing. But I am getting pretty pumped for “Scream 4.” We already knew that Emma Roberts, niece of Julia, was starring and that Hayden Panetierre was playing her bestie. And that Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette would be reviving their iconic roles. Now some new players have been added to the mix. Apparently, Anna Paquin has been cast in the flick! As has the amazing Kristen Bell of “Veronica Mars!” And Shenae Grimes, who you probably know from “90210″ but was far superior on “Degrassi“! Matthew Lillard has one of those faces you don’t forget. Fourteen years after “Scream,” he still has the same hip guy-next-door charm and contagious energy. And he’s poised for a major resurgence. Last year, I had the pleasure of working with Matthew on “Spooner” (to be released soon), a romantic comedy about a guy who meets the girl of his dreams while being kicked out of his parents house at age 30. Matt starred in and produced the movie, while I wrote the screenplay. But that’s not all Matt’s got going on. He recently shot “The Descendants,” Alexander Payne’s new flick in which he plays a guy sleeping with George Clooney’s wife. He also has a new TV show in the works called “The Hard Life.” He recently helped a group of lady friends get their play off the ground and helmed the project as director. All while selling a house and making sure his three kids get to and from school on time.
I jumped at the chance to pick Matt’s brain for The Frisky and, earlier this week, joined him at his kitchen table as he finished a comedy podcast. Since Drew Barrymore is a megastar these days, it’s hard to remember that before “Scream” came out in 1996, she had largely fallen off the pop culture radar. Her cameo in the flick completely revived her career. And, uh, brought back to life the entire genre of teen horror movies. I’m wondering if “Scream” will have the star-making effect on Emma Roberts, who has just signed on to play Jill in “Scream 4,” which will begin shooting in June. The sequel is going back to its roots—it’s being written by Kevin Williamson, the “Dawson’s Creek” scribe who was behind the first “Scream.” Courteney Cox and David Arquette will both be back for the sequel. As will Neve Campbell—Emma’s character is actually Sidney Prescott’s cousin. And her best friend will be played by Hayden Panetierre, who is no Rose McGowan, but whatever. Emma is pumped about the role. “I’m so excited to be part of this ground-breaking franchise,” she says. “It’s the perfect opportunity for me to do something completely different than I’ve ever done before.” Who knew running from a serial killer could be so much fun?
