Happy Saturday! And a begrudging Happy Almost Autumn. One of the only things that helps me ease out of summer and into fall is listening to music that just sounds better when the temperatures are cooling and the leaves are starting to fall. A playlist for you to enjoy, after the jump!

In honor of How To Deal Week, today’s Saturday Playlist is a collection of songs that helped us get through tough times in our lives. These are the songs we listened to as we dealt with break-ups, death, depression, family drama, being alone in a new city, and realizing our high school crush was never going to like us back. Listen to it as a whole, or pick and choose the tracks that speak to you, but either way, we hope this music will help you deal with whatever you’re going through. And believe us, it will get better… Keep reading »
Don’t let the name fool you — this mix is purely for mellow nighttime listening. Sure, there’s a couple of “less mellow” jams on there, too, but for the most part, these are some of my fave slightly darkwave-y, at-home-with-the-cats kind of tracks. Enjoy! And tell me what your songs of summer have been in the comments. Keep reading »
I am not very good at being a hipster. Sure, I own a few pairs of wayfarers and I’ve been known to see movies ironically, but I’ve never thought of myself as “cool” and I really, really hate PBR (am I suffering from Hipster Denial Disorder? Most likely). Even so, when I plopped all my favorite indie/emo/electro-dance songs into one playlist, I fell in love with the results. I’m sure real hipsters will dismiss most or all of these artists as too mainstream, but you’ve gotta admit–it’s a great mix for getting stuff done around the house or, you know, brooding and illustrating your graphic novel. Enjoy, my dears!

Schmoopy-ville: Population 1. That’s me! This summer I’m head over heels for a new fella and as a result most of the songs I listen to on Spotify are pretty happy of late. A bunch of these are ones my dude sent me. A couple are silly pop songs that make me think of him. The OK Go song is because went to an OK Go concert together. The Madonna one is, um, self-explanatory. And Norah Jones’ “Happy Pills” isn’t a love song, exactly, but the lyrics always remind me of what love feels like. Schmoop out everyone! Keep reading »
I basically think about going to the beach, being at the beach, and listening to music on the beach, like, year round. Currently, these are the jams I would chill out to while digging my toes in the sand. Enjoy and happy Saturday, y’all! Keep reading »
The thing I like best about Spotify is that I can make a playlist for every nuance of mood I might be experiencing (and I have many). This week, I’ve been listening to The Smiths a lot. Those of you who are long-time readers know that I used to be goth in high school. Back in the day, when I was feeling inky and writing tortured poetry about my unrequited crushes, the Moz was my muse. When most people listen to The Smiths, it means they’re depressed. When I listen to The Smiths, it means I’m in a really good place. Go figure.
Morrissey nerds like myself know that he hails from Manchester, England, which is famous for birthing various music movements from punk rock to “Madchester.” I made a playlist of all the dark-luscious music to emerge from this gritty, industrial town. Happy pain dancing. Enjoy after the jump! Keep reading »
I listen to music all day while I’m working and, thanks to Spotify, I also make my own mixes. I like this, especially, because I used to DJ a ton and I think I’m pretty good at mixes — figuring out what follows which song, and how it should all flow together.
I made this all-ladies mix a while back, and am stoked to share with you some of my fave girl-bands and female musicians, past and present. Enjoy, after the jump! (And tell us what you’ve been listening to lately in the comments!)
