Tina Fey: Not Feminist Enough?

I knew this was going to happen: Tina Fey hosted “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend and yesterday morning, our fellow lady blogs were all abuzz with complain-y posts. Bloggers I read and respect, including Sady Doyle at Feministe, Jessica Grose at Double X, and Irin Carmon at Jezebel, took to their blogs to react to Fey‘s hosting gig. And I understand why women were watching, fingers poised to the keyboard: Whip-smart and witty Fey is a role model for millions of women and girls.

Still, I’ll bet Jude Law didn’t have to deal with being over-analyzed to death the Monday morning after he hosted. Keep reading »

The 5 Best And Worst “SNL” Movies Of All Time

As those of us longtime fans of “Saturday Night Live” know, turning a five-minute skit into a two-hour movie can be either the best idea ever or the worst. Really, there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground when it comes to “SNL” films. Next month, “MacGruber,” the latest of the “SNL” flicks, hits theaters. In case you missed the skit on the small screen, Will Forte plays MacGruber—a spoof of the ’80s TV detective MacGyver. The film, based on some kind of far-fetched nuclear weapons plot, will also star Ryan Phillippe as his sidekick, Kristin Wiig as his love interest, and Val Kilmer as the villain. I must admit I’m a wee bit nervous. Is this film really a good idea? [Moviefone]

Zach Galifianakis Was “So Raven” On SNL

I. told. you. so. Zach Galifianakis was SOLID GOLD as the host of “Saturday Night Live” last night, from the minute he walked on set during his opening monologue. The only thing to complain about — there wasn’t enough of him. While normally I’m happy to see hosts make minor appearances in plenty of the skits, Zach could have held his own against any of “SNL”‘s regular cast members. Over the weekend I had a dream about Zach Galifianakis that gave me a tingle in my lower parts. Ever since, it’s been hard to think of anything else. I don’t know what it is about him — his beard, his cushion-y physique, his hilarious charm maybe? — but I am seriously crushing. I can just look at him and laugh. Which is why I am so super excited for Zach to host’s this weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Maybe I’m building it up too much, but I think we’re in for one of the funniest episodes ever. Jennifer Lopez Nails Rihanna On “SNL”

Jennifer Lopez hosted and performed on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend and as you might expect of the totally meh singer/actress, the episode was only so-so. However, the opening skit, which spoofed the catastrophe known as “We Are The World 25″ (which was filled with “half famous randoms”) was hilarrrrrious and J.Lo herself did a pretty dead-on impression of Rihanna. Betty White May Be Hosting “SNL” After All — Just Not On Her Own

Ask — nay, demand — and Lorne Michaels will listen, sort of. For the last month or so, fans of Betty White have been clamoring for the “Golden Girl” to host “Saturday Night Live,” and according to Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorne Michaels is game. However, he’s apparently not sure that White, who is 88 years old, will be able to carry the show on her own, so he’s supposedly assembling a roster of funny ladies to host together. Molly Shannon is on board, and Michaels is going after “SNL” alum like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as well. The idea of all these women on “Saturday Night Live” totally excites me, but I totally think White could pull off the hosting gig on her own. I mean, would Michaels not allow Clint Eastwood — who is turning 80 this year — to host on his own? Betty White, while up there in years, is a professional, and a hilarious one at that — I say she should get the coveted hosting gig all for herself, unless she feels like sharing.   • Tina Fey is guest hosting “Saturday Night Live” in April, which probably means another Sarah Palin impersonation! “It’s inevitable that we’ll try it, at least,” Fey told the AP. “We’ll see if it makes it to air.” Now, if they could just get Amy Poehler back to do Hillary Clinton. [AP]
  • Happy 88th birthday, Helen Gurley Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan! Brown is also the author of the bestselling book Sex and the Single Girl, an essential piece of literature in the ’60s and ’70s sexual revolution. [Wikipedia]
  • London’s Globe Theater has commissioned its first play written by a woman, “Bedlam” by Nell Leyshon. The Globe, where William Shakespeare staged his plays, was closed from 1642 until 1997. Not until now has a female playwright had her work performed there.

In the digital short, above, Hamm plays a sexy saxophonist named Sergio who emerges during the most inopportune moments after a curse is placed on Andy Samberg’s character.
