  • Awwwwww, yeah! Tina Fey will host the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” on September 28th, with Arcade Fire for the musical guest. Miley Cyrus will combine hosting and twerking duties on October 5, so, um, hide the children. [New York Times]
  • Roll eyes. Demi Lovato signed a multi-book publishing deal and her first book will be a collection of her tweets — TWEETS! — called Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year. [New York Times]
  • A woman named Polina Polonsky, who lived with Lamar Odom as a “roommate” for six weeks this summer, blabbed to TMZ that she saw him smoke crack multiple times.  [TMZ]
  • Katherine Heigl has been cast in a new NBC drama about a CIA analyst with a “complicated personal life.” Sounds like “Scandal,” only with that annoying lady from “Knocked Up.” [TVline] Keep reading »

There is nothing funny about the plight of China’s high tech workers. Employees who make iPhones and other tech devices for exportation overseas work long hours in difficult conditions with little compensation. Times reporter Dan Levin’s article, “The Demanding Off-Hour Escapes of China’s High-Tech Workers,” explores how these workers deal with their stresses and blow off steam. Not a particularly humorous subject, really.

And yet!

Levin’s article opens with a description — noticed by an editor at Think Progress — that perfectly mimics one of “Saturday Night Live” character Stefon’s famous night club reviews:

“The hottest nightclub in this factory town is a neon-encrusted dive down the road from the industrial park where iPhones are made 24 hours a day. Tucked behind an open construction site, “Through the Summer,” as the nightspot is known, had it all on a recent Saturday night — plastic whistles, fruit plates, a toddler with a mohawk, counterfeit light sabers and a bawdy comedian who imbibed beer through his nose.”

We’re not sure if The New York Times was in on the joke (probs not, considering they believe women wear dresses is a wild breaking trend), or even if Dan Levin knew what he was doing, but either way, bravo! [New York Times via Huffington Post]

Adore- trailer

Dear the movie “Adore,” starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright,

Let me start by saying that I’m not here as another social media troll who just wants to make fun of your semi-absurd plot. That would just be too easy. I know that you didn’t just turn the satirical “Mother Lover” into a pouty, melodramatic screenplay. After all, I just Googled that your director is French and your writer is British, so they could have been clueless to its existence. However, because we are friends here, I feel it’s only fair to warn you that you’re going to eat a lot of shit for this. I mean, a lot.

You see, if you’ve been on planet Earth lately, you know that the “Saturday Night Live” music video starring Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake went viral a few years back. In it, they don bad ’80s garb and monstrous chin straps while cheering on each other on their crooning quest for mother loving. Keep reading »

The “Saturday Night Live” Season Finale Was A Real Tearjerker

New York's Hottest Club Is ... Stefon's Wedding?!

I don’t generally expect my eyes to blink back tears and a lump to swell in my throat while watching an episode of “Saturday Night Live,” but there’s a first time for everything. Saturday night’s “SNL” finale featured the show bidding three of its best male cast members — Fred Armisen and Bill Hader, — adieu. First, “Weekend Update” host Seth Meyers — who will also be leaving the show midway through next season, taking over Jimmy Fallon’s “Late Nite” slot when Fallon replaces Jay Leno at “The Tonight Show”  – welcomed Hader for his final segment as Stefon, New York City’s most fabulous nightlife expert. In the segment, Stefon, who has long crushed on Seth, flounces off set, fed up with not getting Seth’s respect for his recommendations. Besides, he’s engaged to someone else now and they’re getting married! What happens next is pure perfection. (Clip above!) Keep reading »

Gilda Radner and Bill Murray

I keep thinking about a thing I read on Ye Olde Internet earlier this week. It was a passage from the “Saturday Night Live” oral history, Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live. Gilda Radner was a regular “SNL” cast member from 1975 to 1980, and at one time dated Bill Murray, though their relationship was stormy and contentious. After five years, she left the show to pursue film work, and eventually married fellow comedian Gene Wilder in 1984 (after divorcing from first husband, “SNL” bandleader G.E. Smith).

In 1986, Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She suffered through chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and went into remission. But two years after first being diagnosed, the cancer came back. She passed away in May 1989 at the age of 42. In the following passage, Bill Murray recounts the last night he spent with Radner. “Saturday Night Live” Plays “Game Of ‘Game Of Thrones’”

What Year Is It?

Zach Galifianakis first “Saturday Night Live” hosting appearance was maybe one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen (“That’s so Raven?”), so I had high hopes for his second stint this weekend. Alas, the show was off-kilter and random, and not in the good way Zach is generally known for. But one sketch in particular made me crack up — watch as Zach plays a dragon costume-clad “Game of Thrones” fan on the show “Game of ‘Game of Thrones’,” who keeps getting the, well, hardest questions for a “GoT” fan to answer. Jaime Lannister himself  makes an appearance. Swooooon!
