Maryland To Recognize Same-Sex Marriages Performed in Other States

I have a friend who came to the United States from Israel to sing opera. He’s kind and funny, and when he sings, the air fills and tingles with his music. But too often, I’ve seen him looking sadly distant. He married his boyfriend last year in Connecticut, but then had to put him on the plane back home. At the moment they see each other once every few months, meeting up in Germany or Greece, but then each returning to a different country, oceans apart. Because our federal government doesn’t yet have an allowance for the partners in gay couples to immigrate on marriage visas, they’re being kept apart. And it sucks. Hopefully, more legislation rolls in like what’s happening in Maryland now.

Straight Woman Auctions Her Right To Marry On eBay

How cool! A straight woman named Jamie Frevele is auctioning off her right to marry on eBay after New York State voted not to grant homosexual couples the right to gay marriage. Of course, a person can’t actually transfer a right on eBay, but all the money Frevele does earn off her eBay auction will go to The Point Foundation, which provides financial support, mentoring and leadership training to students who are marginalized by their sexual orientation. Says her eBay listing:

I will write you up a fancy, wonderful, articulate proclamation handing over my right to get married. I have no official documentation because this is something I was born with since I was born heterosexual. Unfortunately, this is only a symbolic gesture…Your bid, on the other hand, is real, and the donation you make to an organization that supports those who have been treated as second-class citizens will be well worth it.

You’ve got four days left to bid—and hey, now might be a good time to do your holiday charity donation! [eBay] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: California Prankster Tries To Ban Divorce To Save “Traditional Marriage”

  • “Saturday Night Live” has hired another female writer! Jessi Klein is the third person with a vagina (not including performers) to grace the current “SNL” writing team. [The Wrap]—Could it be that Klein was hired in response to criticism by former “Letterman” writer Nell Scovell, who complained in Vanity Fair about nearly all-male comedy show writing staffs?
  • John Marcotte, a rabble-rouser with a great sense of humor, is trying to get a measure on California’s ballot box to ban divorce to make a statement about same-sex marriage, which was outlawed in 2008 to protect so-called traditional marriage between straights. Marcotte told CBS News, “Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage … it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more.” He has a point! Maine Repeals Same-Sex Marriage Law

Boo! Maine, you FAIL. In yesterday’s election, Maine voters repealed a gay marriage law which would have made it the sixth state in America where gays have the right to marry just like straight couples. Instead, Maine has the dubious distinction of being the 31st state to make gay marriage verboten. It’s a total bummer that this kind of bigotry came from the people up; the gay marriage law had actually passed through the state legislature and was signed by the governor six months ago. The trouble was that gay rights opposition groups were hot on the politicians’ tails and immediately mobilized voters to repeal the law. Sorry, my dears, but at least you can still get married in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa, right? [ABC News] Keep reading »

Marc Jacobs Fights For Gay Marriage With T-Shirts

The fight to legalize same-sex marriage just got more um, fashionable? Marc Jacobs has added his two cents to the debate with these limited-edition, illustrated tees. One features a couple and their child, all in matching LBDs, while the other features an image of the U.S. flag and dollar signs. Both boldly say, “I Pay My Taxes. I Want My Rights.” The shirts are only $24 a pop, but if you want one and don’t live in the New York City area, you’re sorta out of luck. They’re only sold at the Marc by Marc Jacobs accessories store in downtown Manhattan and only 200 of each style have been produced for purchase. Still, there’s always Ebay. [The Cut] Keep reading »
