In other words, gay couples will not be prevented from marrying while gay marriage opponents appeal his decision. Congratulations, Cali gays and lesbians! [NOH8campaign.com]

Today’s Lady News: “Today” Will Not Be Throwing A Gay Wedding

  • Lesbian and gay couples are urging NBC to open “The Today Show”‘s wedding contest to them, too. The network has said it won’t do so because New York state, where the show is filmed, doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage. Gay rights advocates say that excuse doesn’t hold water because NY actually recognizes marriage licenses from other states, so a ceremony could, in fact, be performed on the show. [TheWrap.com]
  • Louisiana Senator David Vitter said it’s “old news” that his former staffer, Brent Furer, allegedly held a woman at knife point and threatened to kill her. The incident occurred in 2008 and Furer resigned last month after an ABC News report on the incident; Vitter had repeatedly refused to answer questions about why he kept Furer on staff all that time. • More crap news from the wage gap trenches: German women expect to earn a lower salary than their male counterparts because men are considered to be the breadwinners. A recent study found German women earn 20 percent less than men, one of the highest gender gaps in the European Union, and researchers theorize they accept the unequal pay as a part of their culture. Lesbian Couple Challenges The Defense Of Marriage Act

Imagine being married to a State Police lieutenant who is killed in the line of duty — and then you learn that even though you are the widower of a fallen state employee, you’re not eligible for federal benefits that would be available to other widows.

Such could be the case for Kathy Bush, one half of a lesbian couple in Massachusetts. Bush and her partner, Mary Ritchie, married in 2004, when same-sex marriage was legalized by the state. At last, the couple didn’t have to worry about hiring lawyers to write contracts stipulating their parental rights and health care plans (something married, straight couples never have to do). But Ritchie and Bush still weren’t in the clear. Keep reading »

Quotable: Laura Bush Says The Bushes Have “A Number Of Close Friends Who Are Gay”

“In 2004 the social question that animated the campaign was gay marriage. Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

Sarah Silverman took a really strong stance in the fight for marriage equality via her Twitter yesterday. Should heterosexuals and homosexuals in select states show their solidarity by protesting marriage altogether? Tell us what you think in the comments! [Twitter] Keep reading »

Maryland To Recognize Same-Sex Marriages Performed in Other States

I have a friend who came to the United States from Israel to sing opera. He’s kind and funny, and when he sings, the air fills and tingles with his music. But too often, I’ve seen him looking sadly distant. He married his boyfriend last year in Connecticut, but then had to put him on the plane back home. At the moment they see each other once every few months, meeting up in Germany or Greece, but then each returning to a different country, oceans apart. Because our federal government doesn’t yet have an allowance for the partners in gay couples to immigrate on marriage visas, they’re being kept apart. And it sucks. Hopefully, more legislation rolls in like what’s happening in Maryland now.
