“When I go shopping, my wife doesn’t allow me to look around the store at all. I am put in a changing room and things are passed to me like you would pass food to a prisoner.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron describes his usual shopping habits, which are apparently dictated entirely by his wife Samantha. When I first read this quote, I was kind of scandalized by the image of the Prime Minister trapped in a dressing room being forced to try on designer slacks, but then I realized I do the exact same thing to my boyfriend. Usually we do one lap of a store together, and then once he’s safely locked away in the dressing room, I start throwing things over the door and using a combination of threats and bribes to convince him to try them on (this is how he came to own a purple cardigan). Do any of you pick out clothing for your partner? With Samantha Cameron’s arrival on the scene, it looks like political fashion is a style subject that’s going to remain relevant for years to come. The wife of new British Prime Minister David Cameron is in the debut stages of becoming a full-on fashion obsession who will likely join the design dialogue already put in place by Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni. In fact, some reckon that “Sam Cam” might even become more relevant, thanks to already being part of the fashion industry — she’s the creative director for Smythson, a luxury leather accessories brand. Samantha’s style aesthetics, like MObama’s, speak to the average consumer in a way that’s fairly new for First Ladies.
