A lot has happened since 2010 when we got to witness Sally Draper’s temper tantrum as a little girl, and feminist blogger Amanda Marcotte made the astute observation that Sally Draper was a feminist hero. That tantrum was our first glimpse into what would later become Sally’s numerous instances of resistance against a broken old world order. She has internalized every dysfunction of her parents and her culture and rejects it. It symbolized the great uprising of women and people of color that would follow; Civil Rights marches and Gloria Steinem would be the epic “tantrums” at large that would reshape the country forever. Four years later in our current TV time, Marcotte predicted correctly.

As an avid superfan of “Mad Men” from the get-go, it’s fun to realize that I have been growing up with Sally now for almost her entire life-span: childhood, puberty, now young womanhood. But from the end of last season up to now, I have been especially jolted by the writers’ particular and deliberate crafting of Sally’s character as a feminist force. It’s no mistake that she is shaping to be the most feminist character in the series. Joan, Peggy and Megan certainly come close, but Sally truly represents the next generation. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!) Keep reading »

Kiernan Shipka
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad Closet

Oh, let me count all the ways I hate Kiernan Shipka. (And by hate I mean love.) She has a sense of humor. She’s got badass Chanel shoes. She wears capes. Her hair braid is freaking adorable. She makes her own clothes. She loves Helena Bonham Carter’s style. And she got to keep the wardrobe department’s backup pair of white go-go boots from that episode where Sally Draper bought some very ’60s shoes, because, duh, every 12-year-old needs a pair of white go-go boots. Oh God and she’s on Twitter at @KiernanShipka. BRB, begging her to be my little sister. [YouTube]

Watch Video

It’s about 10 years too late to help Shia LaBeouf. But maybe Kiernan Shipka can still do some good in the wild and crazy world of child stars. She has certainly spent long enough in the child psychologist’s office on “Mad Men.” Most of the sessions in this Funny Or Die video are pretty cool, like the one with that chick who played Topanga on “Boy Meets World.” But does the Eden Wood cameo one freak anyone else out? It’s a little too eerie … [Funny Or Die] Keep reading »

Sally Draper Would Like To Punch Betty In The Face, Too

Preternaturally intelligent Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sally Draper on our fave show ever, “Mad Men,” was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly about the show and her role on it. Kiernan was frank about her feelings about TV mom Betty Draper. “As much as I don’t like Betty’s character,” she said, “January‘s amazing and I love watching Betty. But I hate Betty as a person. I sometimes I just wanna punch her in the face.” Us too, Kiernan. Us too. [Entertainment Weekly] Keep reading »

Quotable: Sally Draper Not Allowed To Watch “Mad Men”

“I’m not allowed to watch the show. My mom will tape it and then show me the scenes she feels are appropriate. [...] I’m very method when I’m on set. It’s just kind of thinking the thoughts of Sally, and I pretty much just become her. It’s a character that I’ve known for a really long time, so it’s pretty easy. [...] I don’t think she’s a bad kid at all. She’s going through a rough time. Don is absent and Betty has never once catered to Sally’s emotional needs, so I feel that they’re not the best parents.”

— Kiernan Shipka, the precocious young actress who plays Sally Draper, Betty and Don’s oldest child, on “Mad Men,” explains how she channels and connects to her character despite not being allowed to watch much of the show. Of Sally’s recent acting out, Kiernan also teases: “Believe it or not, there’s a lot more coming. You’re just gonna have to wait and see what it is.” Can’t wait! [via Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Sally Draper Is Really Smart And Plays Golf

Kiernan Shipka, aka Sally Draper of “Mad Men,” is apparently really, really well spoken for a 10-year-old girl. When asked whether she would act like Sally if her parents were like Betty and Don, she said:

“I think Sally’s actually much better than I would be, given her situation. Sally is really, really reserved. Divorce can be terribly stressful and confusing. Add to that an emotionally unresponsive mother and a physically absent father, I think Sally’s actions are pretty tame. If I was experiencing Sally’s situation, I would be a complete terror of a kid.”
