The Devil Dog-Lover Wears Prada: Saks Fifth Avenue To Sell Plus-Size Clothes

High fashion is usually a skinny woman’s game (which is not so surprising when you consider the 15-year-old girls stomping designer looks down the runways). But Saks Fifth Avenue is taking a bold step to be inclusive to all women by beginning to sell plus sizes. The flagship department store in New York City will soon offer high-end clothes by Chanel, Fendi, Yves St. Laurent and other designers up to at least size 14; depending on the designer, some clothes will be available up to size 20. Huh. I didn’t even know companies like Chanel made bigger sizes. Did Saks make this decision out of the goodness of its heart? Or was it a financial decision? I would imagine in a bad economy, when $7,000 skirts aren’t flying off hangers, Saks decided to broaden their clientele. But, hey, I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if the company brings this new size-conscious model to stores around the country at a future date. [Racked] Keep reading »

Now You Can Afford Zac Posen! Maybe…

Zac Posen knows how to please the masses. For those who just can’t afford his normal line, the designer has decided to launch a lower priced collection, and no, it’s not with Target. Instead, he’s created Z Spoke, a collection of 60 pieces, which will be sold only at Saks Fifth Avenue starting this spring. Ready for the prices? Items start at $78. “I think it’s going to surprise people,” said Zac. “This is about a new identity.” It’s not all cheap though. Dresses can go for upwards of $600 dollars, but when you compare that to his regular line, well, it is cheaper. So what can we expect to see in stores? According to Zac, it’s a minimalist and utilitarian look, full of knits, cotton shirting, blazers and pleated khaki shorts that was inspired by downtown chic looks, like those of Lower East Side girls. [Wait, like me and Erin? -- Editor] While these are no Target prices, it does open the Posen brand to a whole new audience. We’ll keep you posted… [WWD] Keep reading »

Marc Jacobs & Chairlift Do Bizarre, Low-Budget Videos For Saks

Chairlift is a band we love. Marc Jacobs is a designer we adore. Yet, we’re a bit puzzled by the promotional videos they worked on together for Saks Fifth Avenue. The videos feature the three members of Chairlift clad in Marc Jacobs’ fall collection, wandering around Williamsburg, Brooklyn like drugged-out hipsters. In each montage, set to Chairlift tunes, the sequences are clearly meant to look ironically low-budget with cheesy, porno-like close-ups on handbags and washed-out lighting. The effect comes off as completely bizarre. In the first, “Making an Entrance,” the gang wanders around a warehouse block doing yoga poses and attempting handstands. In “Drawing Attention,” the band heads to the roof of a building to look cool while drawing on the walls and taking pictures of each other to post on their blogs and MySpace pages. The craziest one, however, has to be “For the Love of Tacos,” above, where the Marc Jacobs-chic crowd goes to this, like, divey bodega for tacos that, of course, was totally rad before all the hipsters came and made it a party spot. Oh, the irony is killing us. Watch it and can we please discuss!?! [SaksFifthAvenue.com] Keep reading »
