A New York Grand Jury Decided Not To Indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, Who Killed Eric Garner On Camera

todays lady news
  • A New York grand jury decided not to indict the police officer who choked Eric Garner to death on camera after stopping him for selling loose cigarettes. [The Grio]
  • In light of that, here’s hoping that no one invites Rudy Giuliani onto a news show to comment, given his incendiary, racist rhetoric about Ferguson in the last few weeks. [The Intercept]
  • Meanwhile, President Obama is requesting $75 million in funding to retrain police on both community-oriented policing and on how to use the military-grade weapons they receive, and to put body cameras on cops. Considering that Garner was killed on camera, some doubt the efficacy of body cameras. [Atlantic] Keep reading »

Giuliani In Deep Doo-Doo With God

We didn’t realize taking communion had so many rules! Rudy Giuliani got a major scolding from New York Cardinal Egan for taking the Eucharist during Mass when the Pope was in town. Egan said that he had “an understanding” with Giuliani that he would not ingest the communion wafer, which represents the body of Christ, because of his support of abortion rights. Egan said doing so was “a grave offense against the will of God.” Color us crazy, but we’re pretty sure plenty of practicing Catholics don’t agree with everything the Church stands for and still take communion — like all the ones having premarital sex! Is it just worse in God’s eyes for Giuliani to do it because he’s a prominent politician? [MSNBC] Keep reading »

Pay Off: Former Publishing Exec Beats Rupert Murdoch

Former book publishing exec Judith Regan found a way to get back on top of both her former lover and employer in one move. Nope, it’s not some kinky position from the Kama Sutra, it’s just good old-fashioned extortion. After being fired from News Corp in December 2006, the woman responsible for giving porn star Jenna Jameson a book deal ended her wrongful termination lawsuit for about four times her initial $6 million settlement offer from Rupert Murdoch. How did she do it?! By threatening to expose a confidential phone convo she had with Giuliani’s goon and her ex-main squeeze Bernie Kerik that could damage the Republican’s Presidential bid. After bad break-ups with both Kerik and her boss man (who publicly accused her of being anti-Semitic), she’s managed to clear her name and break their bank account. You go girl! Blackmail may be bad, but karma’s a real bitch named Judith Regan. [Alley Insider]

Did The Citizens of New York Pay To Protect Rudy Giuliani’s Affair?

It sure seems that way. The Politico reports that during the period of time when Rudy Giuliani allegedly struck up an extra-marital affair with future wife Judith Nathan, he billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in extra security — security which seems to have been used to ensure the then-mayor’s…ahem…privacy while he was wooing Judith in the Hamptons. Scandal like this always brings to mind the hullabaloo over Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky and his subsequent lie about it. (“I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”) While some had a serious problem with Clinton’s philandering, others were simply turned off by the fact that he would lie about it while under oath. But how does this political/sexual scandal rate on your meter? Do you have a problem voting for a candidate who has cheated? Do you not care what happens in a candidates personal life so long as they’re a solid leader? Or does any impropriety — cheating, lying, misuse of city funds — affect your ability to vote for a candidate? Discuss how you feel about Giuliani’s shady dealings after the jump! [The Politico] Keep reading »
