Make It Stop: “My Boyfriend Doesn’t Care About Spending Birthdays Or Holidays Together!”

I moved into my boyfriend’s place before we were dating as a stepping stone while I transferred my life from west coast to east coast. Having lived together before we started dating and still living together, our relationship is at an escalated pace, which makes it confusing for me. His birthday is coming up right before Christmas, and when I brought up planning celebrations I was shocked. My boyfriend does not think it is important that I be at his birthday party or that we spend holidays together. He strongly believes that there is no need to spend the holidays away from your own family. I am struggling with this because, I think when you are in a committed relationship, living together and in love, you should spend the holidays together, perhaps alternating whose family you spend the holidays with. Am I expecting too much, or should I cut my losses?

Whew. I need to take a deep breath to unpack this all. Keep reading »

My father recently passed away. In addition to the emotional strain, I am overwhelmed by assignments and underwhelmed by uncooperative professors. I’m really not in a position to be cleaning dishes all the time, but more and more I find that’s what I’m doing. Keep reading »

Life After Dating: Marriage For Introverts

Life After Dating: Marriage For Introverts

Pretty much everything about Kale and I getting married was untraditional. But we were actually quite traditional by not moving in together until a few days before our wedding.

Kale and I certainly weren’t opposed to premarital cohabitation on principle: both of us had lived with exes in long-term relationships before. We simply hadn’t been together long enough to move in together: we had only been dating for four months when we got engaged and got married just five weeks after that (yeah, we moved quick). Kale ending his lease in Brooklyn to move into my apartment in Queens a few days before our wedding was pure circumstance.

By cultural standards, the “getting married” part is supposed to be the huge change that occurred in my life. One minute I was filing my taxes solo and then — ba-bam! — I’m legally joined to another person by law. And to be sure, sponsoring Kale for immigration was also a significant event. But the honest truth is that the biggest change during that time, in terms of how it affected my life and how I had to adjust and grow as a person, was acquiring not just a new husband but a new roommate. $800 Room For Rent In Brooklyn, Must Love Strong Opinions Syria

Roommate Problems?
Five common issues and how to deal with them. Read More »

Lucca and I have been discussing a possible move to Brooklyn, but have been a little disappointed to discover that the rental market is not that much better than Manhattan. So when I saw this ad for a $800 room in a prime Williamsburg apartment, I was like, Hmm, maybe there are still deals to be had in Brooklyn! CLICK. Shoulda known. As is the case with the majority of real estate deals in this fair city of mine, this one has a catch. The apartment’s remaining roommate loves discussing the situation in Syria. Like, constantly. Weirdly enough, so does Lucca! Too bad this pad isn’t pet friendly. [Craigslist via Free Williamsburg]
