"It's a way to express your passive aggression."

It’s been so crazy and fascinating to watch Tavi rise from 11-year-old fashion blogger to the editor of her own magazine, Rookie, and bonafide celebrity. Now she’s working the media circuit to spread the word about Rookie Yearbook One, a new book featuring the best articles, photos, and illustrations from Rookie‘s first year. Stopping by “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” yesterday, Tavi was poised, insightful, and funny as she described her rise in the fashion world, getting her hand stroked by Bjork, and, of course, how she perfected her bitchface technique. The whole interview is great, but the bitchfacing tutorial starts at the 2:45 mark. [Late Night with Jimmy Fallon]

“I sat next to Anna Wintour at a Band of Outsiders show, and she asked me, ‘When do you go to school?’ I just felt like, When do your models go to school? I had a really weird moment of feeling like I missed my school and I missed my friends, and there wasn’t any real enthusiasm coming from the people who were there for what was going on around us, even though it should have been this exciting, creative thing. I felt funny about that experience. In a way, fashion had been this magical thing that I was obsessed with. I was just such a fan. But then I got a little too close to it, and that was kind of saddening.”

Tavi Gevinson, fashion blogging phenom, editor of Rookie, and this month’s Bust cover girl (woohoo!) describes the moment she became disillusioned with the glitz and glamor of the fashion world. I think a lot of people who work in the fashion industry have had a moment like this, although it usually happens a bit later in your career, and isn’t necessarily spurred on by an interaction with Anna Wintour. So, what’s next for Tavi? She’s got her eye on a career in film. “After high school, I think I want to take a year off and live in L.A.,” she says, “because I just really like it there and everything is pretty.” Valid point. So, Tavi Gevinson, and some of her friends from the webzine Rookie have been traveling across country this summer with the gang at Urban Outfitters. It pretty much sounds like a buttload of fun; they’ve been making stops in major cities and towns along the way to meet up with fans, hold workshops and go shopping. But on their recent stop in Portland, Oregon, they also got to stay at a farm, and chill with a bunch of chickens, goats and mini-horses. Can you beat that? No, no you can’t. [Urban Outfitters]

My Embarrassing Run-In With Tavi Gevinson

Before working at The Frisky, I spent a few years writing for both music magazines and gossip mags. And it was funny, because the people you’d think I’d get nervous to talk to, I didn’t necessarily, while others left me sweaty palmed and dry mouthed. Michel Gondry? We joked around and took a bunch of stupid snapshots. Me and Andrew WK had a life-changingly good chat. And I once took comedians Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain to a frat party and it was totally fun. But when I had the chance to meet Blake Schwarzenbach from the band Jawbreaker, I ran away from him because i was afraid I was going to say something really stupid.

This is all to say that fandom and idol worship is completely relative and weird and individualistic. And so it was when I spotted tiny, adorable, and completely incredible Tavi Gevinson out front of the Ace Hotel the other day. I love her. I admire her. And I totally fanned out on her.
