High fashion films have a track record of being consistently gorgeous. I’m not talking about, say, “The Devil Wears Prada” (though I will never not argue that it’s one of the best movies ever), but rather the type of high-brow videos that result from collaborations between fashion houses and illustrious directors. Take, for instance, Martin Scorsese’s short for men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel, David Lynch’s campaign for Dior’s Lady Dior, or the Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L’Homme ad created by “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky — as you can see, efforts of this ilk have seriously beautiful outcomes. Angela Doran
Playboy Playmates are known for being bastions of class and social distinction, but sometimes something in them snaps and they go bad. Dorian was besties with Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate, who was murdered by Charles Manson. Polanski apparently gave her the gun to protect herself. But now the Playmate could face life in prison, after shooting her husband during an argument. [TMZ]

A Third Woman Accuses Roman Polanski Of Rape

Former model and Glamour editor Edith Vogelhut has recently come forward to say that she was also raped by Roman Polanski. Vogelhut claims that in 1974, when she was 21 years old, she met the director at an industry party. He took her back for drinks at Jack Nicholson’s home, where Polanski pressured her to take ecstasy. Later in the evening, Vogelhut said he led her into a bedroom where he handcuffed, drugged, and repeatedly sodomized her. “I was humiliated, I had absolutely no one to tell,” she says, explaining why she has kept silent for so long. Vogelhut says it was the confession of the second accuser, actress Charlotte Lewis, that gave her the strength to go to police and talk about the incident publicly. Keep reading »

Filmmaker/Exile/Rapist Roman Polanski Is Now A Free Man

Roman Polanski will walk free: Switzerland has denied the United States’ request to extradite the filmmaker on a 1977 rape charge. Back then, Polanski served 42 days of a 90 day sentence after he plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse for providing a Quaalude and champagne to a 13-year-old girl, who he then raped. When a judge voiced an intention to send him back to prison, Polanski fled the country and has lived in Europe ever since. Keep reading »

Woody Allen Speaks Up For Roman Polanski

Good news, Roman Polanski, a man who cheated on his partner with her adopted daughter is on your side! On Saturday, director Woody Allen told the media at the Cannes Film Festival that Polanski is “embarrassed,” “has suffered” and “has paid his dues” for a 1977 incident where he provided drugs to a 13-year-old girl and then raped her. Polanksi served 42 days in prison back in ’78, but he fled to Europe, where he has lived and made films for decades. Recently, Polanksi has been under house arrest in Switzerland and is facing jail time in the United States. Late last week, another woman accused Polanski of sexually assaulting her over two decades ago. Actress Charlotte Lewis says the director “forced himself” on her when she was 16 and they were working on the film “Pirates” together. Keep reading »

A Second Woman Says She Was Sexually Assaulted By Roman Polanski

Today, British actress Charlotte Lewis and ever-present celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred held a press conference in which Lewis accused director Roman Polanski of sexually assaulting her. Both women remained vague on the details, but stated that the assault happened in 1982 when Lewis was only 16. This was four years after Polanski fled the United States to avoid sentencing in the Samantha Geimer case. Lewis says that the director forced himself on her at his apartment in Paris. She said the circumstances were similar to Geimer’s case, though she would not comment on if this meant that rape or drugs were involved. Keep reading »

Quotable: Roman Polanski Claims Unfair Treatment

“I can no longer remain silent because the United States continues to demand my extradition more to serve me on a platter to the media of the world than to pronounce a judgment concerning which an agreement was reached 33 years ago. I have had my share of dramas and joys, as we all have, and I am not going to try to ask you to pity my lot in life. I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else.”

Roman Polanski claims he’s being treated unfairly by being confined to his Swiss chalet while awaiting possible extradition to the U.S. for a crime he committed decades ago. He also alleges that the Los Angeles County district attorney is using his case to generate publicity and win reelection. [PopEater] Keep reading »

Roman Polanski Has A Friend In A Really High Place — President Nicolas Sarkozy

Roman Polanski, who has dual citizenship in Poland and France, reportedly enlisted French President Nicolas Sarkozy in his bid for leniency in his child-sex case, according to the French newspaper L’Express. Polanski had Sarkozy hand-deliver a letter to President Barack Obama during last week’s nuclear weapons summit. In the missive, Polanski wrote that he believed the 47 days he spent in a California jail in 1977 and two months he spent confined in a Swiss jail last year were enough punishment for his now 32-year-old case. A spokesperson from Obama’s press office had no knowledge of the letter yesterday, but something tells me Obama, a father of two daughters, wouldn’t tarnish his presidency by getting involved in Polanski’s case. How Much Money Would You Spend On An Artsy Photo Of A Rapist And His Late Wife?

This is Roman Polanski and his late wife, Sharon Tate, shortly before she was murdered by the Manson Family in 1969. The photograph, shot by photographer David Bailey, is going up for auction at Christie’s on Dec. 7 and is expected to fetch at least $10,000. How cool would it be if whoever is selling the image — Bailey, I assume — and the auction house donated the profits to a rape crisis center? Not likely, though, I suppose. Keep reading »

Fun With Family: Roman Polanski Ruined My Thanksgiving

Well, sort of. The director was at the center of an argument between my brother and I that started almost as soon as we sat down for Thanksgiving dinner.

[For reference: Polanski was apprehended by Swiss authorities, after he fled the United States in 1977 before he could be sentenced for having "unlawful sex with a minor," a lesser charge than the original six, which Polanski pled guilty to. (He was originally charged with "rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor.") Polanski fled the country before sentencing upon learning that the judge was planning on giving him jail time, despite the recommendations of a probation report and psychiatric evaluation, which both indicated that Polanski should be released on time served. For the record, Polanski served only 42 days out of the initial 90 before being released and making a break for his native France.]

I just assumed my brother shared my opinion that Polanski should be locked in jail and the key thrown away. When he didn’t — and said that Polanski should be released because he wasn’t a serial predator, that the judge in the case was on a witch hunt, and that the 13-year-old girl whom Polanski had sex with had “consented” and “maybe even took the drugs on her own” — I basically lost my shizz. Was my own flesh and blood not only being a rape apologist but victim-blaming as well? Keep reading »
