Robotic Model Can’t Compare To Humans

For the first time ever, a robot walked a fashion runway today in Tokyo. Well it didn’t exactly walk, but sort of wobbled like someone waking from an anesthesia-induced stupor. Although this was a great feat in the robotics industry, don’t expect HRP-4C, the Cybernetic fashion model, to hit another catwalk anytime soon because her signature walk needs a lot of work. I’m not even sure Miss J. can help this one. “Our robot can’t move elegantly like the real models that are here today,” Shuji Kajita, director of humanoid robot engineering at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the company that developed HRP-4C. “It’ll take another 20 to 30 years of research to make that happen.” Our whole concept of a fashion show will probably change by then, so I think the robot industry will serve humanity better by developing a robot maid or mate. Robotic Model To Walk Tokyo Runway

Tyra Banks may be trying to groom the next supermodel on “America’s Next Top Model,” but over in Tokyo, they’re building their catwalkers from motors, batteries, and software. On March 23, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology will unveil HRP-4C, a sleek Cybernetic fashion model that is battery-powered and programmed to mimic the facial expressions, gait, and poses of real supermodels. This robot is 5 feet 2 inches tall — quite a bit shorter than the average runway model, but her 95-pound weight will have every starving supermodel jealous. Although her shape represents the average Japanese woman, her eyes, face, and hair are based on anime comics. Like most runway walkers, this robot is programmed only for entertainment, not housework. At a cost of $2 million, this model might never come to market, but experts expect a multi-billion dollar robot industry in the future. [Reuters] Keep reading »

Pole Dancing Robots Shake Things Up

Sci-fi guy fantasy has hit a whole new woody-popping high with robotic pole dancers. Created by Giles Walker, these dancing machines have been humping all over the United Kingdom, Spain and even at an Australian music festival. The bump and grind girls move to the beat and have been getting lots of attention while on display at a new London art gallery, muTATE, which just opened in November. While we here on The Frisky have all been debating whether or not guys going to strip clubs is considered cheating, that was sooooo 2008. In these futuristic times, now we also get to wonder if a robo exotic dancer counts. [BBC] Keep reading »
