Rob Delaney Reddit AMA

You are very kind! The response is primarily very positive. I just want to show that you can be a blustery hairy “alpha” male and a feminist at the same time. Plus, I love affirmative action. Misogyny will almost definitely outlast homophobia and racism on this planet and it’s because of systems that were put in place forever ago and assiduously maintained and strengthened over the years. So we’ve got to tear those down. And when I say “we,” that includes men. And guess what? MY LOT, as a straight white man, IMPROVES when women’s lot improves. A rising tide raises all ships > there are more women then men on the planet > if we improve women’s lot, the world is BETTER FOR EVERYONE. HOW DO PEOPLE NOT REALIZE THIS? It infuriates me, then I turn that fury into jokes, essays, basic human kindness and hard work to try and make the world a better place for everyone. WOE unto the man who doesn’t actively try to make the world better for women. Regardless of one’s spiritual beliefs, his soul will be torn apart by neon griffins in hell.

Comedian Rob Delaney‘s response to a Reddit AMA question about his fans’ response to his outspoken feminist opinions. Well said, Delaney. And just one more reason to read his awesome book! [Reddit]

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. 10 Reasons Reading Rob Delaney's Book Will Make Your Life Better

If you are on Twitter and don’t follow @RobDelaney, you need to rethink your life. It’s like going to Italy and not eating pizza, or driving through New Jersey for the first time and not listening to Bruce Springsteen, which I’m pretty sure is illegal. Bruce Springsteen is the King of New Jersey, and Rob Delaney is the King of Twitter.

Delaney is more than a hairy Twitter King in a green speedo, however, and he recently wrote a fantastic book called, Mother. Wife. Sister. Human. Warrior. Falcon. Yardstick. Turban. Cabbage.

I just finished reading it, and now I want to hug people who look sad, call my mom to tell her I love her, trespass on creepy abandoned property, tickle a kitten, and be a better, funnier person.

I support a woman’s right to safe, legal abortion because centuries of history shows us that women are going to get abortions whether they’re safe and legal or not. And when they’re not safe and legal, these women will often die terribly or be damaged irreparably. In my fantasy utopia, there would be no abortion. There’d be contraception readily available and there’d be education geared toward preventing unwanted pregnancies. Adoption would be easier. We don’t live in a utopia, however. We live in a country where scoundrels are certain and nuance is vilified. … I don’t know how to look at those who’d restrict or deny access to abortion, contraception and abortion and not see misogyny. Not sexism; that’s a gender neutral word. Misogyny is the hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women. It’s an ugly word and it represents an ugly thing. And Good God, is it lazy. And disingenuous. And it is the warm and welcoming home to the idea that a pregnant woman who doesn’t want to take her pregnancy to term should not have access to a safe and legal abortion.

– Comic Rob Delaney is someone I always see my friends retweeting for his 140-character long jokes. Turns out, he’s also passionate about a women’s right to choose as well. In his essay on the UK’s Guardian, Delaney explains how he has two children with his wife and although he personally believes abortion is a scary thing, he can’t imagine forcing women to go through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth. Not only that, but he names the mistrust of women making their own self-determining decisions as what it is: misogyny. Well said, sir. I do appreciate it when men can speak about feminist issues and maybe reach people that wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to the ideas. [Guardian UK] [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
